** It is especially traumatic to Hibiki because he had run away from one group he had bonded with just to start bonding with another which had rescued him, only to lose them entirely. His trauma is twofold. One was the individuals he got to know either instantly dying or sacrificing themselves to save him (a first time experience for him). The second was during the battle itself, with the colonist fleet inspired by him cutting a swath through the enemy and following behind to back him up, which only adds to the pain and his feelings of personally failure when the main enemy armada proceeds to obliterate the fleet entirely and proceeds past to towards their planet.

* The RedShirtArmy at the end of the first season. Hibiki meets them, they get some depth and they aren't going let their planet get harvested, and the harvest fleet they were trying to stop proceeds to effortlessly tear them apart while Hibiki is powerless to help them.
