* In the main 4 books, Mike O'Neil, Jr., suffers quite a bit. In ''Gust Front'', he manages to push the Posleen back across the Potomac and save Washington D.C., only to find out his wife died hours ago up in orbit. Then, in ''Hell's Faire'', he seemingly loses his father and his daughter defending Rabun Gap from the Posleen, though they actually survived. In ''Honor of the Clan'', when we meet back up with Mike for the first time since ''Hell's Faire'', we find out he has devoted himself entirely to ACS, having very little left in the world to care about, and he accidentally kills his father in a raid on the main Bane Sidhe base.
* In ''Watch on the Rhine'', we are introduced to Gudrun, the love interest of Dieter Schultz, the gunner of the Tiger-III tank ''Anna''. They fall madly in love from one meeting, and she sends him a lock of her hair as a memento, abandoning the man she previously loved. Ironically, her previous beau receives the news that his girlfriend broke up with him during the fighting to contain the initial Posleen landings, and his abandonment of his post, in dejection, causes him to be devoured by the Posleen, and for Gudrun's hometown to be overrun. As the perspective cuts between Gudrun fleeing her town and Dieter pining for her, it seems like Gudrun might make it...[[ShootTheShaggyDog until a Posleen normal finds her and butchers her]]. The last perspective of Gudrun is her decapitated head watching the sunrise with dead eyes, [[ImAHumanitarian the nearby Posleen getting ready to cut off her skullcap to get at the delicious brains inside...]]
* In ''Yellow Eyes'', Daisy Mae recounts the gestalt Des Moines' memories of hearing her sister ship, Newport News, being scrapped, which doubles as Nightmare Fuel. [[BodyHorror Imagine being paralyzed, enough to immobilize you, but enough to still feel. Then imagine surgeons slowly stripping you apart, piece by piece, over the course of weeks, while still keeping you alive. The surgeons remove relatively tiny chunks, but you can feel each piece of skin they shave off, each bit of organ they take out, each bone they extract. You scream, but your cries of agony fade over time from your own awareness dying, until there is nothing left of you.]]
