Staff purposely ignored his birthday while dedicating an episode of EXO's Showtime to having the members buy Chanyeol birthday gifts. He suffered from major depression, along with several other physical illnesses (one of them being myocarditis, a painful and potentially fatal heart disease). Also, SM had turned down all of the acting offers he'd received from various companies, and it wasn't until he left that he'd be able to take up any of them. Also, his departure in January 2013 was not his first attempt at leaving the group as many believed; he was temporarily ''kicked out'' for asking why a composition of his was scrapped. All of of South Korea, and many Western and Chinese fans were against him, and the members, including Tao, denouncing him as a traitor didn't help at all.

TL;DR Korean media and SM Entertainment have been spitting fire at him whereas all Lu Han wants to do is rest and recover.

Korean netizens and fans saw this as a sign that he was going to leave and ''betray'' [=SM=], despite Lay clarifying numerous times that he would never leave the group because he promised the members that he would stick with them no matter what. His loyalty to things tends to go extremes as at one point, because [=EXO=] was promoting a different food chain, Lay refused eat UsefulNotes/McDonalds at the airport and chose to starve instead. And he revealed that he is still in contact with Lu Han and possibly Kris as well, and that while their departure affected the group heavily, they would all be brothers forever so that would never change. Since then, Lay has received numerous death threats on his instagram, forcing him to delete all of his photos.
