In the epilogue with his mother rescued and reunited with them he lies to her father that Nora was probably a controller the whole time and only with him because of his work (a lie which eats him up inside). For a character who never did anything wrong, for Marco to break the relationship and leave her a victim of the Yeerks is tragic.
