One more entry, in case potentially spiteful "Sword Art Online is for basement dwelling virgins" haters with too much time sneak their way in here.

** Kirito's massice Zweihandler that he primarily wielded in the ''Fairy Dance'' Arc bears more than a passing resmeblence to Guts' iconic Dragon-Slayer, and both can swing their respective BFS ''single handedly with one hand.''
** Both are christened War Heroes for deeds that inspired hope in the DarkestHour of their respective Worlds (Guts as "The Cleaver of A Hundred" that eventually led to the end of the Hundred Year War, Kirito as "The Black Swordsman" who slew Gleaming Eyes and Kayaba Akihiko soon thereafter and freeing the surviving 6000 trapped in ''Sword Art Online'')
** Kirito, like Guts, both had to endure the spectacle of the OneTrueLove of their lives (Asuna and Casca) being sexually-assaulted by a sociopath of godlike power (Sugou and Griffiths); though thankfully in Kirito's sake he was able to turn Sugou into confetti before he could get past LecherousLicking.
*** The similarities to Berserk could be more than coincidental, as the original ''Sword Art Online'' web-novels were written in the early 2000's, not long after the conclusion of the aforementioned events in the ''Golden Age'' Arc of "Berserk", which ran from 1992 to 1997 during Kawahara Reki's highschool days.

** Kirito, like Guts, Notably, Kirito shares with Guts the rare honor of a being an Action Protagonist in the Anime and Manga industry who ''gets to physically consumate their love with their Lady Fair;; (Asuna and Casca respectively) long '''before''' the story's conclusion, and not remain a virgin (in the virtual world, at least, for Kirito)

LecherousLicking Asuna. Guts was not so lucky.

** In ''Hollow Realization'', there's another player running around by the name of Genesis who also goes by the moniker of "The Black Swordsman", and perhaps not coincidentally he uses a {{BFS}}, is a loner, can be quite the jerk, [[spoiler:and uses a dangerous power-up in order to win his biggest fights]]. Ironically, ''he's'' seen as a "pretender" in-universe in much the same way that Kirito was seen as such by out-of-universe fans.

Wanted to address the With Us Or Against Us elephant in the room, having now seen Berserk and finding it to be just as enjoyable and valid and a work of art as Sword Art Online.

* Kirito is referred to as the "[[Manga/{{Berserk}} The Black Swordsman]]" due to having black hair, wearing black and his main weapon being a black sword. Of course, this is one ShoutOut [[FandomRivalry that got a little too heated in some circles...]]

But look a little closer, and more commonalities emerge.
** Both start their lives as orphans who shut off their emotions
due to having black hair, wearing black the terrible loss of losing everyone they loved (The Black Cats for Kirito, the entire Falcon Company except for Casca and his main weapon Ricket for Guts).

** And after years of pain, guilt and self loathing, both Kirito and Guts thankfuly open their hearts again by finding a new loving FamilyOfChoice through TrueCompanions.

* The duo adorable yet eerily out-of-context little girls that Kirito and Eugeo encounter on their ascent up the 100 flights of red-carpeted stairs of Quinella's tower is a nod to the CreepyTwins of little-girl ghosts encountered by Danny in the 1975 Creator/StanleyKubrick horror film ''Film/TheShining''

** While attempting to solo the Grand Quest, Kirito gets overwhelmed by a swarm of enemies, ending up impaled multiple times, similar to Asuka's fight with the Mass-Production Evas in ''End of Evangelion''. There's even a similar POV shot of Kirito [[GraspTheSun futilely reaching skyward]], in his case towards the upper levels of the World Tree where Asuna is being held.

* The epilogue to The ''Alicization Arc'', wherein Kirito and Asuna [[spoiler: spend centuries as King and Queen of the Underworld that they saved, only to forget about all of it when they return to the "real" world, so they can readjust and normally live out the rest of their mortal childhood]] is almost identical to the what happens to the Four Pevensie Children protagonists of Literature/TheLionTheWitchAndTheWardrobe after their adventures in Narnia.
