Shiki's adoptive robot grandfather, who played the Demon King at the Granbell Kingdom. Having long since broken down from old age, Ziggy left Shiki with his own '''[[GravityMaster Satan Gravity]]''' ability along with his old starship, the ''Edens Zero''. However, just before Shiki sets out beyond the Sakura Cosmos, Ziggy returns to life as the evil Mechanical King with two goals in mind: to forge a new world where machines rule over humans, and to destroy Shiki at all costs.

* AdaptationalWimp: In the anime, the destruction he causes on Granbell doesn't go beyond sinking the Granbell Kingdom island into the sea, which is a major step down from the manga, where he completely [[PlanetDestroyer reduces the planet itself to rubble]].
* AllLovingHero: Ziggy is known to his friends and family as a man who views humans and machines on equal terms, believing that everyone has a "heart" no matter who or what they are.
* AlternateSelf: [[spoiler:Ziggy is a future version of Shiki from Universe 3173, where he was transported to 20,000 years into the future after trying to stop Shura's anti-matter bombs in Universe 2, if not a Universe just like it. As a consequence of the current Shiki choosing to not stop the bombs, Ziggy became a separate existence from Shiki in Universe 3.]]
* AmnesiacDissonance: After remembering his past an EvilOverlord out to KillAllHumans, Ziggy is motivated partially by disgust with himself for treating "ugly, foolish creatures" like humans with the same respect as machines, and for raising the boy who would pose a threat to the entire universe itself. * AppropriatedAppellation: The name "Ziggy" itself is not his original name. Rather, it comes from [[spoiler:his labored effort at pronouncing his original name, Shiki, which gets mangled into "Jigi/Zhigi" due to him suffering from radioactive burns at the time. Because [[TomatoInTheMirror he recognizes the name he was saying]], he says it with enough [[SayMyName clarity and intensity]] for his doctors to conclude his name must be Ziggy.]]
* ArchEnemy: He becomes this for Shiki after becoming the BigBad, with the ''Edens Zero'' crew's search for Mother gradually being overtaken by their battle to save the universe from Ziggy.
* BadassCape: He has a big cloak that oozes the authority and awesomeness of someone who once ruled the Sakura Cosmos.

* BigBad: After coming BackFromTheDead and regaining his memories, he reveals himself to be EvilAllAlong and becomes the ultimate obstacle the heroes must face in their pursuit of Mother. [[spoiler:{{Subverted}} when it's revealed this Ziggy is another personality created by the ''Edens One'' to control the good, true Ziggy, making him the DiscOneFinalBoss.]]
* BigGood: [[spoiler:Ziggy takes on this role in Universe Zero, where Void has no sway over him like he did in the previous world. This allows Ziggy to leave the ''Edens Zero'' on Granbell so Shiki can begin his adventure immediately, and later take the fight straight to the BigBad himself.]]
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: [[spoiler:{{Downplayed}}. When Ziggy's human face is visible, only the sclera of his left eye changes to black to enhance his crazed, diabolical nature.]]
* BoldExplorer: He is one of countless interstellar explorers who traveled into deep space in search of Mother, specifically to wish for her to restore his lost memories.
* BrainUploading: [[spoiler:Due to the extensive damage his body suffered in the {{Antimatter}} explosion that originally sent him to the future, his mind was [[UnwillingRoboticization unwillingly]] uploaded into his current mechanical body.]]

* TheCaptain: His title as "Demon King" also makes him captain of the ''Edens Zero'' and its SuperiorSuccessor, the ''Edens One'', with Connor--the self-professed captain of the latter ship--really being a glorified helmsman for hire.

* ChekhovsGunman: Hundreds of chapters before it's revealed to be Ziggy, his true identity is introduced as [[spoiler:the unidentified human man in the [[MeanwhileInTheFuture 20,000-year flash-forward]] during the Norma arc]].
* CoolOldGuy: Ziggy is one of the most powerful warriors in the cosmos, a seasoned intergalactic explorer, and--before becoming the BigBad--an advocate for mechanical lifeforms everywhere.
* ConquerorFromTheFuture: [[spoiler:As revealed in the Lendard arc, Ziggy is not any mere GalacticConqueror; he's a conqueror from several thousand years in the future, where all other humans have died out and androids have taken their place.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: {{Subverted}}. Despite looking like an EvilOverlord straight out of a HighFantasy series, he is introduced as a paragon of kindness and wisdom for everyone who knew him. After he comes BackFromTheDead, however, he proves himself to be every bit as evil as being a [[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]] robot would suggest. [[spoiler:Then DoubleSubverted when he turns out to have been under the control of the ''Edens One''[='=]s A.I., making him GoodAllAlong.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: He has a mean wit, best shown when he dryly dismisses Emperor Nero's InfoDump on Jaguar:

* DeathOfPersonality: [[spoiler:Ziggy's current personality comes from the loss of his memories and old personality as Shiki, developing a more mild-mannered and worrisome persona over the decades he spent living on Planet Eden, and eventually developing into the wise and mischievous old bot his current family knows. It's because of this disconnect that Ziggy no longer considers himself to be Shiki, despite his awareness of who he used to be.]]
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:After being returned to his true, good personality in the Lendard arc, Ziggy is shown to be desperate to die to stop the true BigBad from controlling him again, but is still [[ICannotSelfTerminate prevented from destroying himself]]. This leads Ziggy to beg Shiki to put him out of his misery, going as far as to [[HydePlaysJekyll act like he's fallen back under control]] and [[DeathFakedForYou fake Pino's death]] when Shiki hesitates.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:After being set up as the BigBad, Ziggy is revealed in the Lendard arc to have just been controlled by the real BigBad, the ''Edens One'', and pushes Shiki into killing him to prevent the ship's A.I. from taking control of him again.]]
* EnhancedPunch: He can use Gravity Fist just like Shiki, which uses gravity to boost the strength of his punch. His Ultimachina Impact takes it a step further, punching his opponent with gravitational force that swells up and explodes for additional damage.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Everyone besides his closest allies simply calls him "Demon King", which is both his role in the theme park and his title as captain of the ''Edens Zero''.
* EvilAllAlong: Ziggy purports that his original self was an evil GalacticConqueror, while the robot his friends and loved ones are familiar with was only good because he was suffering from IdentityAmnesia. [[spoiler:{{Subverted}} once it's revealed that the good personality was the original personality, and his turn to evil was caused by the ''Edens One''[='=]s A.I. [[GrandTheftMe taking him over]].]]
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Goes through one at the end of the Foresta arc, despite looking like an ObviouslyEvil [[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]] to begin with: his [[SkullForAHead skull face]] becomes more detailed with realistic teeth; his chin plate becomes more jagged, his [[HornedHumanoid horns]] curve upwards; his body bulks up considerably; his fanged chest plate becomes a BellyMouth with a floating orb in the center; he drops his ShouldersOfDoom; and he replaces his simple, thin legs with boots.

* EvilOverlord: As the BigBad, his title as [[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]] isn't [[MeanCharacterNiceActor just for show]] like it was before, as he soars the cosmos to conquer planets, bend unwilling robots to his will, and spread death and chaos to every corner of the universe he can reach.

* EvilWearsBlack: Ziggy's EvilCostumeSwitch replaces his red BadassCape with a black one.
* EvilerThanThou: To [[TheEmperor Poseidon Nero]]. While Nero puts up a much better fight than Ziggy expects out of him, Ziggy finds it ridiculous that Nero sacrificed everyone he knew to fulfill his [[ArtifactOfPower Empire Dice]]'s prophecies, and would just as readily sacrifice the empire he gained from this if it means guaranteeing his victory against Ziggy. [[spoiler:For that, Ziggy crushes Nero's dice the first opportunity he gets and drains the life out of him.]]
* ExpressiveSkull: While his face is designed to look like a skull, his mouth still curves and bends whenever he needs to emote.
* FaceOfAThug: He looks like an archetypal fantasy villain with a SkullForAHead, but he's also an AllLovingHero and the story's GreaterScopeParagon. However, this winds up being called into question by TheReveal that he's an [[AmnesiacVillainJoinsTheHeroes amnesiac villain]].
* FallenHero: [[spoiler:Ziggy was originally another version of Shiki, whom Ziggy raised himself to [[AllLovingHero show compassion to all forms of life]], and who wanted nothing more than to explore the cosmos and [[IJustWantToHaveFriends make hundreds of friends]]. Then he made a TragicMistake that killed his friends and flung him thousands of years into the future without his memories, and his attempts to save the past only left him stranded there to become the ''Edens One''[='=]s helpless pawn.]]
* FantasticFightingStyle: Ziggy is proficient in the Magimech School of [[GravityMaster Gravity Martial Arts]], which allows him to alter weight and gravitational direction of anything, [[SemanticSuperpower including concepts]].
* FantasticRacism: In stark contrast to the AllLovingHero that Shiki and the rest knew, Ziggy is convinced that HumansAreBastards and sees it best to [[KillAllHumans kill them all]].
* FinalBoss: He fulfills this role InUniverse to parkgoers at the Granbell Kingdom, and his throne room aboard the ''Edens Zero'' gives off the vibes of a FinalBoss chamber in a JRPG.

* FutureBadass: [[spoiler:Ziggy turns out to be this for Shiki, as [[FutureSelfReveal revealed]] in the Lendard arc, which gives him such an advantage in age and experience that Shiki has to [[SuperMode Overdrive]] just to match Ziggy's base level of power, while Ziggy's [[OneWingedAngel Overdrive]] completely eclipses Shiki's.]]
* TheGadfly: Ziggy is shown to have had a playfully deceitful side to him as Shiki's grandfather, evidenced by how he tricked Shiki into thinking a shooting star was a dragon when he wasn't so sure himself.

* GlowingMechanicalEyes: As a machine, he sports a single pupil that [[RedEyesTakeWarning glows red]].
* GoodAllAlong: [[spoiler:Rather than an evil GalacticConqueror like he claimed to have been prior to his memory loss, Ziggy is revealed in the Lendard arc to be a would-be hero from the future who was simply [[GrandTheftMe taken control of by another]] and used to commit evil against his will, and was FightingFromTheInside to help his old friends however he could.]]
* GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler:He's revealed in the Lendard arc to have been a victim of this since he was brought BackFromTheDead, with the perpetrator and Shiki's true enemy being Void, the ''Edens One''[='=]s A.I. itself.]]
* GreaterScopeParagon: Before his death, Ziggy is the the robot who raised Shiki and built the Four Shining Stars, teaching them the value of life for machines and friendship with humans, which made them the caring and heroic figures they are today.
* GravityMaster: He has the same gravity powers as Shiki does, but uses them on a grander scale such as [[PlanetDestroyer crumbling a small planet]]. He also uses it as a SemanticSuperpower by [[spoiler:becoming a PowerParasite via causing others' powers to "fall" into him]].

* GrinOfAudacity: His built-in SlasherSmile becomes this to reflect his nature as a adventurous, mischievous, wizened old bot.
* HornedHumanoid: There are two huge horns grafted onto the sides of his head, which become larger and turned upward in his transformed appearance.
* HydePlaysJekyll: Ziggy is able to pull this off twice in the Lendard arc thanks to the stark personality shift he undergoes during his FaceHeelTurn, making it seem like he's another person entirely, though the context between each moment is different due to the fact that [[spoiler:he's actually being puppeteered by the real BigBad]]:
** In the first instance, he pulls off a WoundedGazelleGambit after Elsie nearly defeats him, briefly changing back to his original self and pleading her to flee with Shiki before stabbing her with her own sword. [[spoiler:This winds up being {{subverted}} once it's revealed he was actually FightingFromTheInside against the BigBad's control.]]
** In the second instance, [[spoiler:this is played straight by the real Ziggy, who pretends to slip back under the BigBad's control to motivate Shiki into killing him for good, [[DeathFakedForYou faking Pino's death]] to trigger Shiki's TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening.]]
* IHaveNoSon:
** Grandson, in this case, as the first thing he tells Shiki after coming BackFromTheDead is that it was a mistake to raise him and send him away from Granbell. [[spoiler:{{Subverted}} when he assures Shiki that he still loves him after being freed from the real BigBad.]]
** During the final arc, it's shown that Ziggy feels this way towards [[spoiler:Void, his KidFromTheFuture, since Void is the BigBad who wants to kill Mother and all of humanity, and was the one who controlled him all along.]]
* IHatePastMe: [[spoiler:{{Subverted}}. As Shiki's future self, he seems convinced his past self is a threat to the universe and will stop at nothing to kill him, but this turns out to be because of the ''Edens One''[='=]s control. Ziggy's real personality still doesn't remember his past life, and holds no grudges against Shiki.]]
* IdentityAmnesia:
** He lost his memories of his past over 100 years before his death, finding himself living on Granbell without a care in the world. This led him to look for Mother so he could wish for his memories back, but he abandoned his search when he found Shiki, feeling that raising him was more important. His true identity is eventually revealed to be [[spoiler:a future version of Shiki, who suffered from TraumaInducedAmnesia when he was rebuilt as a robot and [[TomatoInTheMirror realized who he became]], leading to his DeathOfPersonality.]]
** As revealed in the Lendard arc, [[spoiler:Ziggy lost his memories a second time after a Chronophage caught his ship during his voyage from the future to save humanity from extinction, leaving him TrappedInThePast with no knowledge of his mission or that he was ever human to begin with.]]
* InstantExpert: According to his teacher, Xenolith, Ziggy mastered all techniques of Gravity Martial Arts in a single day, as if he already knew them. [[spoiler:This is because he did, [[StableTimeLoop having passed the same techniques onto his own younger self]].]]
* LastOfHisKind: [[spoiler:Before becoming Ziggy, Shiki is the last known living human left in his home of Universe 3173 when he's found in the far future, and only because he was catapulted several millennia across time. Once he's turned into a machine, the human race is made extinct.]]
* LikeASonToMe: Before coming BackFromTheDead, Ziggy views Shiki like a grandson and raises him as such.
* LosingYourHead: Being a machine, Ziggy can easily survive getting his head ripped off and reattach it with gravity.

* MaouTheDemonKing: ZigZagged. His title as "Demon King" (''Maou'') refers to his role at a theme park, and to his position as the King of [[{{Magitek}} Magimech]] (''Makai no Ou''),[[note]]''Makai'' being a {{Portmanteau}} of ''ma'' (demon/magic) and ''kikai'' (machine)[[/note]] a benevolent figure who shares [[MagicByAnyOtherName Ether]] with machines. After coming BackFromTheDead, however, he fully leans into all of the title's villainous connotations as an EvilOverlord and GalacticConqueror.
* MeanCharacterNiceActor: During his time on Granbell, he's only called the "[[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]]" because that's his character role at a theme park, as he's beloved by the locals and visitors alike.
* MusicalThemeNaming: According to Mashima, the name "Ziggy" was picked as a ShoutOut to "[[Music/TheRiseAndFallOfZiggyStardustAndTheSpidersFromMars Ziggy Stardust]]" by Music/DavidBowie.
* NotQuiteFlight: Just like Shiki, Ziggy's gravity gives him the power to levitate and "fall" in different directions to emulate flight.
* ObviouslyEvil: A peculiar example in that despite looking like an archetypal [[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]], Ziggy was set up as a genuinely good robot who simply performed the part at a theme park. After he comes BackFromTheDead, however, he reveals himself to have been EvilAllAlong and was suffering from IdentityAmnesia the entire time his closest friends and loved ones knew him. [[spoiler:{{Subverted}} in the Lendard arc, which shows he was simply being puppetted by the ''Edens One'', and was truly GoodAllAlong.]]
* OldMaster: On top of being Shiki's surrogate grandfather, he is also his and Shura's teacher in the use of [[GravityMaster Gravity Martial Arts]], and is more powerful than either of them.
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:His [[SuperMode Overdrive]] form functions as this, seriously jacking up his body mass and Ether power to such an extent that Shiki, who could previously match him blow for blow when Overdriving himself, suffers a CurbStompBattle.]]
* PerpetualSmiler: His default expression is a SlasherSmile befitting an EvilOverlord, though in his amnesiac state, it comes off as a GrinOfAudacity to show his kinder nature.

* PowerParasite: His Gravity Drain lets him [[ManaDrain siphon other people's Ether into himself]] with his gravitational pull, allowing him to steal any Ether Gear they may have. Since Ether is also a person's LifeEnergy, this [[LifeDrain kills the victim of the absorbed Ether Gear]].
* APupilOfMineUntilHeTurnedToEvil: Ziggy studied under Xenolith, the inventor of the [[GravityMaster Gravity Martial Arts]], before turning to TheDarkSide. As Ziggy claims, however, he was EvilAllAlong; he simply [[IdentityAmnesia didn't remember any of it at the time]].
* PosthumousCharacter: {{Subverted}}. He broke down from old age a decade before Rebecca and Happy come to Granbell and meet Shiki, but comes BackFromTheDead and becomes a central player to the story.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: As both a warship captain and head of the robot community of Granbell, he stands as the most powerful of each group with his [[GravityMaster Satan Gravity]].
* RapidFireFisticuffs: His Gravity Inferno technique involves pummeling his opponents with gravitational force that punches holes into any surface behind them.
* RebuiltPedestal: [[spoiler:Shiki and the surviving Shining Stars regain their faith in Ziggy the moment it's revealed that he didn't willingly betray his friends or beliefs.]]
* RedBaron:
** He is called the [[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]] not just because he played one at a theme park, but because that's his title as TheCaptain of the ''Edens Zero''. As Witch later elaborates, the "Demon King" is an alternate name for the King of [[{{Magitek}} Magimech]], a benevolent fairy tale character who shares [[MagicByAnyOtherName Ether]] with machines.
** As the BigBad, he makes a name for himself as the "Mechanical King" for his dominion over robots, which eventually becomes his epithet as [[spoiler:one of the Oración Seis Galáctica]].

* RetiredBadass: After amassing a reputation as the Sakura Cosmos's original ruler and a famous explorer of the stars, he retired to Granbell as a humble theme park animatronic to spend the rest of his days raising Shiki.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: [[spoiler:His unmasked self appears perfectly human, but given the immediate reveal that his mind was uploaded into a fully mechanical body to [[WeCanRebuildHim rebuild him from death's door]], it's clear that his flesh and hair are synthetic upgrades given to him.]]

* SemanticSuperpower: As a wielder of "true" gravity, he knows how to affect gravity on a conceptual level. Case in point, he becomes a PowerParasite by making others' abilities "fall" into him.
* ShouldersOfDoom: He usually wears two golden skull-shaped pauldrons, adding to his imposing stature as MaouTheDemonKing.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:As Shiki's AlternateSelf, Ziggy is the only remaining member of the ''Edens Zero'' crew of his Universe, with the rest either killed in the explosion of Nero 66 or dead due to the 20,000 year TimeSkip caused by the detonation of the {{Antimatter}} bombs combined with his and Rebecca's Ether Gear.]]
* SkullForAHead: His face is designed to look like one. [[spoiler:{{Subverted}} when it's revealed to be a mask covering his true, humanoid face.]]
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler:{{Subverted}}. After returning to normal, Ziggy speaks as though his evil behavior is because of another personality that was slowly [[SplitPersonalityTakeover taking over]] before he died, addressing him as "Ziggy" as though he himself were not. However, he clarifies for Shiki that this other "personality" is actually an entirely different entity who knew of his true identity and took control of him.]]
* SlasherSmile: His [[PerpetualSmiler permanent expression]] looks like one, but he doesn't truly pull it off until the reveal of his evil nature, turning his wry smile into a wicked, contemptful sneer.
* SuperToughness: By virtue of being a machine, Ziggy can take attacks that would instantly kill any organic being, such as multiple [[ArmorPiercingAttack armor-piercing attacks]] or [[LosingYourHead getting his head ripped off]].
* ThatManIsDead: [[spoiler:Both Ziggy's good and evil "personalities" feel this way about being Shiki, but for different reasons: the "evil" Ziggy simply [[IHatePastMe despises his past self]], while the "good" Ziggy still has IdentityAmnesia and can't see Shiki as anything but his grandson.]]
* ThinkingUpPortals: [[spoiler:He gains the same "Wormhole" ability as Nero, which lets him create portals to just about any other location in the universe, after draining Nero's Ether Gear and killing him in the Nero 66 arc.]]
* TinTyrant: Ziggy is a robot decked out in terrifying armor suitable for a [[MaouTheDemonKing Demon King]], and takes on the role of a GalacticConqueror after becoming the BigBad.
* TomTheDarkLord: "Ziggy" isn't exactly the most threatening name for a Demon King.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:Back when he was still Shiki, Ziggy had no idea he would become his own adoptive grandfather, let alone his own worst enemy. When Shiki finally put two and two together by trying to say his name during his UnwillingRoboticization, only to keep mangling it as "Jigi/Zhigi" because of his weak and sickly state at the time, the shock was so great that he suffered TraumaInducedAmnesia.]]
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler:On top of being a loving grandfather and philanthropist, Ziggy is also a future version of Shiki who lost his identity and friends during an attempt to save everyone GoneHorriblyWrong. Upon coming BackFromTheDead, he is reduced to an unwilling extension of the ''Edens One''[='=]s will, and [[ICannotSelfTerminate begs Shiki for the release of death]] when he briefly returns to his old self, unable to bear living as a puppet of evil.]]
* TragicTimeTraveler: [[spoiler:Shiki was hurdled 20,000 years into the future by a disaster he couldn't prevent, killing all his friends and leaving him with TraumaInducedAmnesia under the belief that [[TomatoInTheMirror he'd become his own despised enemy]], which permanently [[DeathOfPersonality snuffed out his old identity]]. Then, when sent on a mission to return to the past and save TheMultiverse from extinction, he wound up TrappedInThePast with no memory of his mission to begin with, and was eventually [[GrandTheftMe overtaken]] by an evil A.I. that sought to wipe all human life from existence, destroying what good faith he'd built for himself by then.]]
* TranshumanTreachery: His desire to eradicate all humans takes on this shade when it's revealed [[spoiler:he WasOnceAMan, though it's {{subverted}} when it's revealed the ''Edens One'' was controlling him and forcing him to act against his true, human-loving nature.]]
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: [[spoiler:The physical and mental damage Shiki suffers due to the exploding {{antimatter}} bombs, the 20,000-year time jump, the [[TomatoInTheMirror realization of his own identity as Ziggy]], and realizing he's the only survivor of all his friends--complete with seeing Rebecca's corpse--badly affects his memory. His memories further fade away over the course of decades until he forgets who Rebecca was before they came to the future, despite regularly visiting her body and wishing he could remember her.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: ZigZagged. He normally acknowledges the [[WorldsMostWanted Oración Seis Galáctica]] like Elsie and Nero as powerful obstacles in his plan, but he also deems an ex-Galáctica member like Jaguar to be a nuisance not worth fighting himself. This costs him when they meet in the Nero 66 arc, where [[spoiler:Ziggy nearly loses Brigandine and Killer--two of his best minions--after deeming them more than a match for Jaguar, who trashes them in a CurbStompBattle.]]
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: As head robot of the Granbell Kingdom and the ''Edens Zero'', Ziggy is respected and adored by his subjects, crew, and adoptive grandson, who all continue to speak highly of his wisdom and kindness years after his death.
* WalkingSpoiler: Ziggy's past and identity are deeply ingrained into the story's biggest twists on more than one front:
** He's set up as a PosthumousCharacter and GreaterScopeParagon until he comes BackFromTheDead and becomes the BigBad following Drakken Joe's defeat, boasting to have been EvilAllAlong and suffering from IdentityAmnesia.
