Duke continues the game and explains his backstory. He idolized Maximillion Pegasus and wanted to invent a new game that was just as fun as Duel Monsters, and hoped Industrial Illusions could sell Dungeon Dice Monsters. Just before Duelist Kingdom, he was invited to the island to test the game out. Pegasus defeated him easily, but agreed to have Industrial Illusions produce Dungeon Dice Monsters. With assurances that the contract could be settled after the tournament was over, Duke returned to the mainland satisfied.

After that tournament, Pegasus dropped off the face of the earth -- no answers, no contract, nothing. Duke accuses Yugi of cheating, saying that nobody could beat Pegasus in a fair fight, and his victory will expose Yugi as a cheater. Duke holds Yugi solely responsible for devastating Pegasus and ruining his dream, and he's bent on using whatever it takes to defeat Yugi here and now.

Yugi, however, isn't able to summon any monsters because his dice were too high-level, reducing the chance that a Summon Crest would be rolled. He realizes that nearly ''all'' of his dice are high-level. While Duke's monsters aren't strong, not having ''any'' monsters is bad news, and if he can't defend himself Duke can take him out with ease. (Yugi's friends ask for Duke to let him reselect the dice, but he refuses.)

Duke summons many more monsters, as well as a treasure chest, but Yugi's luck pays off when he summons the high-level Mighty Mage, which destroys one of Duke's monsters. He summons a low-level monster as well, but Duke has increased his store of Magic Crests, and uses four of them to activate the ability of his most recent monster. From across the playing field, Blast Lizard destroys Yami's low-level monster. With a reduced defense, Yugi watches as Duke takes out one of his Heart Points. To make matters worse Duke reveals that he ''invented'' Dungeon Dice Monsters!

Yugi's Dungeon Dice Monsters duel against Duke begins, but things are difficult from the start for Yugi when Duke refuses to explain the rules to the game. They select 15 dice and have them shuffled out. Duke goes first and rolls two Summon Crest. When a player rolls two Summon Crests, one of those dice can be used to summon a monster. These monsters then have the ability to move around on the created squares. The aim is to reach the opponent and attack one of the three Heart Points. Each attack eliminates one Heart Point, and when a player loses all three, that player loses.
