Ford meets again with Old Bill, and tells him what he calls the saddest thing he ever saw: as a child he owned a retired greyhound, and one day in the park it chased down and killed a cat, just like it had been trying to do to the fake rabbit in its races. Afterwards, it just sat there confused, with no idea what to do, just like what would happen to the hosts if they ever actually got their desires. Old Bill just responds with more of his programmed responses, being incapable of genuine empathy unlike the newer hosts.

Dolores stands in a graveyard, where the sound of a bell triggers more memories, and this time the voice says “Find me.” It’s revealed that she, William, and Logan have reached Pariah. William heard her speaking to the voice, which she denies. As they go into town, Logan describes how the park has supposedly been losing money since Arnold’s death, with his company considering buying them out. They also encounter the Confederados, soldiers who refused to surrender after the Civil War, who Logan believes to be the key to a rumored ultimate storyline at the farthest edges of the park.

Lawrence brings up how Teddy used to be Wyatt’s friend, and the Man in Black replies that’s exactly why they need him. They encounter the same boy host who Ford talked with in the desert, who the Man in Black sends for water despite already having a full bag. He then empties that bag and says he was wrong about Lawrence, as his only purpose is to provide enough blood to save Teddy. He cuts Lawrence’s throat and starts collecting his blood in the bag.

Felix and Sylvester repair Maeve, and notice the strange knife wound from when she found the bullet. Felix has been uneasy around her since her escape the last time, insisting that he didn’t forget to put her in sleep mode. He’s also revealed to be secretly keeping a bird host in a tool cabinet.

The Man in Black finishes the transfusion into Teddy, and muses on how when the park started the hosts had fully mechanical insides, but have since been made much more biological, simply because it’s cheaper. Teddy initially refuses to help him, but the Man in Black lies that Watt has kidnapped Dolores, and he immediately jumps to action. As they ride off, the boy host is left staring at Lawrence’s body, oddly dispassionate.

Dolores stares at a body in a coffin and the flashback is expanded, showing her standing among numerous bead bodies. William snaps her out of it, and she talks again about how she feels she’s making her own choices for the first time, which William notes is similar to why people come to the park. Dolores takes note of his reference to the real world, in a sign of her growing beyond her programming. As Logan returns and William tells him it seems like Dolores understands about the real world, she appears to see herself in the crowd celebrating the Day of the Dead. She tries to follow, but then hears Ford’s voice giving the sleep command and collapses.

Ford interrogates Dolores about what she’s been doing, breaking from her usual role. He also asks about her memory of Arnold, to which she says their last meeting was the day he died. Ford is disappointed to hear she hasn’t had any contact with Arnold since then, though he believes the memory of him is still buried under all the updates she’s been given. That last meeting had Arnold telling her to help him destroy the park, though she never did. Ford leaves by refuting Dolores’ question about them being friends: “I wouldn’t say that at all.” Alone, Dolores announces to the empty room that she didn’t tell him anything.

Sylvester catches Felix programming the bird host, in an attempt to teach himself coding and be promoted. He insults the idea and brings in Maeve’s body, having apparently arranged her death again. Felix is surprised to see her yet again, but Sylvester doesn’t care and simply digs the bullet out with his bare hands, showing how little he thinks of the hosts.

Slim introduces William and Logan to El Lazo, who turns out to be the Lawrence host in another role. He demurs on rewarding them, to which Logan pulls out a gun, but he’s promptly punched by one of Lawrence’s men, showing how much more dangerous the park is this far out. Dolores has another vision of the church and tells Lawrence she can see he’s looking for the same thing as her. He says she’s just as crazy as the Confederados, and offers them a job to steal nitroglycerin from a Union convoy. Dolores is given clothes better suited to the job, including a grey hat showing her potential for either good or evil as she evolves.

As they prepare for the ambush, Dolores insists they not kill anyone. The job goes off well, but then Logan starts beating one of the soldiers for insulting him. As everyone else is distracted, Slim and another soldier kill each other, starting the rest fighting back. William instinctively kills a soldier who’s about to shoot Dolores, and then a cold look comes into his eye as he guns down another, and then one more who’s choking Logan. Dolores is distressed at the bloodbath, but Logan is just happy to see William giving in to his inner darkness. They return to Lawrence, who brings out the Confederados including their leader Captain Norris, and invites everyone to spend the night at a party he’s throwing.

Elsie is working on a host who’s become miscalibrated and can’t pour wine accurately, when Livestock techs Destin and Gitlitz wheel the woodcutter host past, telling her he’s headed to the incinerator. She follows them, going past where Felix and Sylvester are working on Maeve, and finding Destin alone shows him a video of how he’s been having sex with inactive hosts. She blackmails him for five minutes with the woodcutter before he’s destroyed, and discovers a device implanted in his arm. She presents Bernard with her findings, that his drawings were actually coordinates to transmit data out of the park.

Lawrence’s party turns out to be a Bacchanalian orgy with every kind of sex act imaginable. In the middle of it, Norris offers William and Logan a place in his upcoming mission, and when Logan starts to accept, William objects. After his brief dalliance into his darker impulses he wants no further part in the violence, to which Logan insults his mediocre career ambitions, saying this trip is precisely because William will never be a threat to him, and his sister probably picked him for the same reason. William shoves him against a wall but quickly relents, then sees that Dolores is gone, frightened by their argument.

Dolores finds a fortune teller who draws a card with the Maze pattern, and she suddenly sees herself at the table instead. The other Dolores tells her to find The Maze, and she discovers a wire sticking out of her wrist. Pulling on it causes more to bloodily come out to her horror, but then her arm is suddenly back to normal. The terrified Dolores runs out of the house, where she discovers Lawrence draining the nitroglycerin into Slim’s body and several others, and filling the bottles with whiskey before Norris takes them. She tells William everything, but he’s now thoroughly disillusioned with the park and refuses to play along with the story anymore. Dolores tells him about the voice she’s been hearing and kisses him.

The Confederados have been drunkenly tossing one of the supposed nitroglycerin bottles around, but then it drops and breaks, revealing the deception. They promptly turn on Logan, and are beating him up by the time William and Dolores arrive. William decides to leave him in the mess he’s made, but then runs into Norris and several of his men. They start to attack William, but then Dolores gets the same cold look herself and shoots them all expertly, explaining to the shocked William “I imagined a story where I didn’t have to be the damsel.” They climb onto Lawrence’s train as it departs with the bodies. Dolores threatens to shoot one and blow them all up to force a truce, also noticing The Maze is stenciled on the coffin lid.

The Man in Black and Teddy enter a small bar, where they’re soon joined by Ford. The Man in Black discusses how he’s taken it upon himself to play the kind of villain Ford could never make, and asks if Wyatt was designed to stop him from finding The Maze, which he suspects holds a deeper meaning behind the creation of the park than just the fantasy. He then threatens Ford, causing Teddy to instinctively stop him, as apparently all hosts are programmed to do. Ford denies he’s there to stop the Man in Black, and even says a phrase that turns Teddy into a loyal alley before he goes.

Felix takes the bird host out again and this time succeeds in reprogramming it. He’s elated as it flies around the room, but his expression quickly turns to fear as it lands on the finger of a fully awake Maeve, who addresses him by name and says they need to talk.
