Players took on the role of tear-collectors for either side. They could sign up for their side at the respective Recruiting Officers, and switch sides by talking to Kara-Meir (heroine of several novels and soon-to-be founder of the Godless). Each side was commanded by a general- the Icyene Padomenes for Saradomin, and the half-Mahjarrat Moia (heroine of the Fremmnik Saga ''Nadir'') for Zamorak.

They could sign up for their side at the respective Recruiting Officers, and could switch sides by talking to Kara-Meir (heroine of several novels and soon-to-be founder co-founder of the Godless). Each side was commanded by a general- general: the Icyene Padomenes for Saradomin, and the half-Mahjarrat Moia (heroine ([[DarkActionGirl heroine]] of the Fremmnik Saga ''Nadir'') "Nadir") for Zamorak.

The battle was a fairly close one, but Saradomin got a lead early and kept it, eventually winning the event and overpowering Zamorak. Moia teleports off with her lord before Saradomin can deal the final blow, but the damage was done. Saradomin was empowered and Zamorak was weakened. The event left the Lumbridge Crater where the forest behind Lumbridge once stood, and eventually led into the quest ''Dishonor Among Thieves'' where the player aids Zamorak in regaining the power he lost in this battle by engaging in a heist to steal the Stone of Jas from Sliske.

Added DiffLines:

* AppliedPhlebotinum: The Divine Tears (essentially Tears of Guthix) were used to power up each god as they fought for weeks on end. Eventually, when the deadline arrived, Saradomin's forces had accumulated more, and so he triumphed over Zamorak.

Added DiffLines:

* EnemyMine: Speculated to have contributed to Saradomin's victory; Zarosian players ''also'' had plenty of reason to want Zamorak to lose the battle, and most likely joined Saradomin's side for lack of any other options to punish the usurper who originally deposed and banished Zaros.
* GaiasLament: The opening explosion of the battle absolutely ''devastated'' the forest west of Lumbridge which has stood since the launch of the game. Even afterwards, a bare crater stood for years in real-time as a stark monument to the renewed godly conflict in-universe. Eventually, Jagex toned down the SceneryGorn and had nature (as well as seasonal events) reclaim the blasted wasteland and the adjacent camps of the gods' supporters.
* HolyHandGrenade: Both Saradominist and Zamorakian "sappers" could put down mines powered by divine energy (or drop them if slain).
* KlingonPromotion: Though not a fatal blow, Saradomin's beatdown of Zamorak allowed Saradomin to sap godly power away from Zamorak, creating a strength disparity between the two where they had previously been equally balanced (according to [[WordOfGod Word of Jagex]]).

Added DiffLines:

* TeamSwitzerland: The Godless, through Kara-Meir, acted as this, allowing a player to switch sides at the cost of accumulated renown. It would not be until the second World Event that they actually took an active role in battle.
* VillainExitStageLeft: Played with, depending on whether one considers them to be villains, but Moia leaves the scene with Zamorak seconds before Saradomin can land a fatal blow.

It hasn't been long since Guthix's death allowed the Gods to return, and already they're causing trouble. Saradomin and Zamorak have found a power source under Lumbridge, and both wish to shoo the other away from it. In interest of doing this, they have engaged in a BeamOfWar. While they are equally matched, they have set their subordinates the task to collect Divine Tears to power them up, and to combat the other side's attempts at collecting tears.

* BeamOfWar: What Saradomin and Zamorak are engaging in while their forces fight on the ground.

Added DiffLines:

* PopularityPower: Since the winner of the contest was whichever god the most players decided to side with, this was essentially in play. Saradomin ended up getting the most backers, and so he won the day.

Players could also help Duke Horacio by advising him where to allocate resources for rebuilding Lumbridge.

* BeamOfWar: What Saradomin and Zamorak are engaging in while their forces fight on the ground.
* TheBusCameBack: Moia returns after previously being seen only in a flashback to her exploring Daemonheim the year before it opened up to players. If you have enough reputation with the Zamorakian faction, she'll tell you what she's been up to since then, and how she came to be Zamorakian.
* OrderVsChaos: Saradomin, god of Law, versus Zamorak, god of Chaos. They've been enemies ever since the earliest days of the game, but this is the first time they've fought onscreen.
* WingedHumanoid: Padomenes, as an Icyene.
