** Team Rocket don't appear until the very end of the episode. They end up relaxing in a mud bath.

** [[TheWorfEffect Turtwig]] suffers this in order to make [[SpotlightStealingSquad Buizel]] look good. Despite being the best option to take on Wake's Quaqsire whose only weakness is Grass, he fails to do much damage and Quaqsire hits it with a barrage of super effective attacks like Ice Beam and Sludge Bomb. It ends up being benched for the rest of the fight and contributing to basically nothing.

* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Crasher Wake sends [[BlowYouAway Gyara]][[MakingASplash dos]] against [[ShockAndAwe Pikachu]]. {{Surprisingly Realistic Outcome}} occurs.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Due to Crasher Wake specializing in an [[PoorPredictableRock all Water team]], he would naturally have to find ways to address their obvious weaknesses to [[ShockAndAwe Electric]] and [[GreenThumb Grass]] types. His team is well constructed. Gyarados being a flying type would naturally punish any challenger who used Grass types at his gym. His Quagsire knows Ice Beam and Sludge Bomb, moves specifically learned to deal with its only weakness Grass should a challenger use one, as well as being [[NoSell immune]] to electric attacks. His Floatzel not only knows Ice Fang which he uses to deal with Grass types, but can use Whirlpool as a defense against electric attacks.
** Despite being a powerful Pokémon and being owned by a Gym Leader, Gyarados still suffers a double weakness to electricity and won't last long against it. Thunderbolt and Volt Tackle are especially powerful moves so its no wonder it went down so quickly.
** People rarely fall for the same trick twice. When Crasher Wake once again attempts to destroy the mini island that Buizel was standing on with his Floatzel and ambush him with an attack which worked well on Pikachu earlier, things didn't go as planned as Buizel took advantage of the smoke from that attack to hide in the water and [[HoistByHisOwnPetard punish]] Floatzel with a Water Pulse that knocked it out cold.

* RealityEnsues:

* RecycledPremise: Ash's star Pokémon battler developing a rivalry a Gym Leader's Pokémon and struggling to defeat and evolved version of itself? [[Recap/PokemonS1E14ElectricShockShowdown Gee where have we heard that before?]]

* ConflictBall: A simple accident on Pikachu's part caused a feud between it and Buizel which made it difficult for Ash to have team work together.

** Chimchar and Gligar understandably doesn't get much focus due to being at a disadvantage against Wake's Water TypePokémon.

* {{Irony}}: Despite Crasher Wake mentioning several times to Ash he couldn't defeat his [[TheAce Floatzel]] with Water Type moves, it ends up going down only by Ash's Water Pulse and Aqua Jet.

** FireForgedFriends: Thanks to working together to defeat Crasher Wake, Buizel, Pikachu, and Turtwing make up after their earlier fight and become closer friends.

* WhamEpisode: Not only does Ash successfully defeat Crasher Wake and earn his 4th badge, but he manages to do it without a single one of his Pokémon fainting in the process which shows his growth as a trainer.

After having fun at the Crogunk Festival yesterday, the time has finally here for Ash to face Crasher Wake in his 4th Gym Battle. His Buizel is pumped to get started after the draw against Lucario in the previous Gym battle but things couldn't be worse as after Pikachu accidentally hurts it leading to a fight and it feeling pressure after meeting Crasher Wake's powerful Floatzel. Will Ash be able to defeat the Torrential Masked Master's water Pokémon team and finally earn the Fen Badge?

When Crasher Wake once again attempts to destroy the mini island that Buizel was standing on with his Floatzel and ambush him with an attack which worked well on Pikachu earlier, things didn't go as plan as Buizel took advantage of the smoke from that attack to hide in the water and punish Floatzel with a Water Pulse that knocked it out cold.

* CurbStompBattle: A bit more of a CurbStompCushion as Wake actually does pull off a good fight and push all of Ash's Pokémon to the limit unlike with Wattson back in Hoenn, but besides the aforementioned Wattson, Wake is the only gym leader Ash has ever beaten without any of his Pokémon being defeated.
