* [[{{Main/Fanservice}} Fanservice]]: In a season mostly devoid of straight examples, leaning more to the FanDisservice side, this episode throws us a bone. We get another Melisandre nude scene as well as a shirtless Daario.

** An InUniverse version; you can see the OhCrap look on Tyrion's face the moment Bronn enters wearing the expensive clothes of a lord instead of his usual grubby armour.

* FemaleGaze: A rare example that is focused at another woman. Melisandre consciously invites it by remaining undressed in Queen Selyse's presence. Selyse takes a long look at her body, apparently envious and jealous of this woman who seduced her husband Stannis but justifying it to herself as being the Lord's work. Melisandre claims that flesh is just another trick of the Lord of Light's real power.

* ForcefulKiss: Sansa is on the receiving end of one by Littlefinger.

** Cersei displays both aspects, as expected for a character who is TooCleverByHalf. She makes sure that [[TheDreaded Gregor Clegane]] is her Champion. A move that shortens the number of fighters would might stand for Tyrion and win. She buys off Bronn (who might so stand and win), who had defended Tyrion in his last trial. But she completely neglected Oberyn Martell, who's been publicly and vociferously shouting for Gregor Clegane's head for twenty years and is in the capital moreover. She probably expected that her blatant attempt at currying sympathy fooled Oberyn who in addition is also a judge and therefore OutGambitted.
** Tyrion, noting his success with this gambit before, likewise hoped that Jaime might recover his muscle memory to fight on his behalf, completely forgetting the years of dedication and training it takes to hone the level of skills needed. Jaime might have matched Clegane with both hands, but with only one he can barely hold his own against stable-boys. Tyrion also hoped to charm and win Bronn over, though he realizes his mistake soon enough.
** Brienne needs to be told off by Podrick for talking about finding Stark girls in lands loyal to the Iron Throne, since they have more money and resources and "Men kill for money". He also uses the apparently useless knowledge of genealogy and heraldry he picked up from Tyrion to identify Lysa Arryn as a probable location for both Arya and Sansa. Neither know it, but he's dead on target, since that's where Sansa is and where The Hound is going.

** And it turns out telling a girl with a long memory for revenge that you'd like to fuck her bloody with a stick is a bad idea also.

*** Although another interpretation is that Oberyn was trying to drive a wedge between Tyrion and his sister, which is likely also the case here (not that Tyrion and Cersei need any help on that score).

* ManlyTears: Tyrion when Oberyn relates how his sister mistreated him and wanted him dead even as a baby.

* ASharedSuffering: Despite some terse words between the Lannister brothers, they share some BlackComedy over their mutual resentment of Father.

Segue to [[TheDreaded Gregor Clegane]], who's impaling, hacking, disemboweling and otherwise gruesomely dispatching condemned prisoners in a sort of quasi 'warm-up' for the real deal. His victims seem to have been given their choice of weapons, but they may as well be unarmed, for all the good it does them. Cersei strides in to thank the Mountain for making it back to the Capital with such speed, and he inquires as to who he'll be fighting. Cersei asks him if it even matters and for a man like Gregor, it truly doesn't. To him, all men soon become dead men.

* ArmorPiercingQuestion: When Tyrion tries appealing to ThePowerOfFriendship to ask Bronn to save his life, Bronn points out that Tyrion has never done the same to him, nor could he be expected to.

* TooDumbToLive: Rorge and Biter, who are both quickly dispatched by Arya and Sandor respectively. This is lampshaded by Sandor, who states that not only were they stupid enough to come by themselves and without their whole group, but also because they were ill-equipped for the task. Doubly so for Biter, who instead of doing the unthinkable and just, say, stab The Hound whilst his back was turned, decided to attack him unarmed by trying to tear his throat out with his teeth! He is rewarded with a [[RealityEnsues broken neck]].
