* MoodWhiplash: Ed confesses his guilt to Hawkeye in calling out Scar for murdering Winry's parents without realizing that Winry was [[RightBehindMe Right Behind Him]], and how he fears that she would have shot Scar if he hadn't been there. Hawkeye tells Ed that he has to keep living if he wants to help Winry... and then asks, "I mean, after all, you love her, don't you?" Ed splutters tea all over poor Black Hayate and freaks out that SheIsNotMyGirlfriend.

* MachiavelliWasWrong: Downplayed. During his first scene, Kimblee shares how he views his fellow soldiers as being hypocritical (claiming they're killing the Ishvalans for their country), because they are in reality killing them out of bloodlust like he is. After he leaves, Mustang asks Hughes why ''he'' kills. Hughes answers frankly "[[NotSoSimilar It's so I don't die]]." So while it's possible that some of the alchemists and soldiers were fighting out bloodlust, Hughes is living proof that contrary to what Kimblee says, not everybody is as bloodthirsty as he is.
