Uncle Matt discovers an unexplored tunnel that leads to Outer Space. He tells his nephew, Gobo, of his discovery and his plans to travel, leaving him his maps and book and instructing him to go to Outer Space every few days and collect the postcards he'll send back.

Unsure of what to do, Gobo goes to the Gorgs' garden to see the Trash Heap and asks for her advice, who tells him to bring his friends. Getting the postcard for the first time, Gobo gets stopped by Sprocket, who, along with Doc, had recently moved in. Mokey saves the day by throwing Sprocket his ball, which had rolled into the tunnel.

Doc and Sprocket move into a deserted room with intent to convert it into workshop. Meanwhile, Gobo's Uncle Matt discovers an unexplored tunnel that leads to the shop, and the rest of Outer Space as a whole. Matt tells Gobo of his discovery and his plans to travel, leaving him his maps and book despite Gobo's objections that Outer Space is just a legend. The Fraggles consider themselves the best of all possible creatures, and love to spend their days endlessly partying and having fun. Music is their greatest talent, but they're also naturally curious with great athletic ability. The viewer is told otherwise when Red, Wembley, and Boober crash through Gobo's house and Boober quakes in fear of a superstition.

Matt shows Gobo the tunnel to Outer Space, amazing Gobo. Matt vows to fully explore Outer Space and asks him to come to the first room and collect the postcards he'll send back. Gobo is reluctant, but has no choice in the matter. As Matt leaves, Sprocket and Doc enter, with Sprocket spying the Fraggle and barking. Doc is oblivious to it all. Gobo is happy his uncle made it out okay, but realizes he'll have to face the "fearsome beast" every few days. In a Traveling Matt segment, Matt sees a taxi and human children playing ball, and cowers in fear from what he believes is an army carrying weapons.

Gobo meets with Mokey, who thinks he needs to work out his problems on his own. Gobo angsts and says he'd take help from the Doozers if they'd give it. The Doozers are tiny, pea-like creatures who build constructions made of radish powder, which Wembley is quick to snack on. Gobo, unsure of how to live up to his uncle's expectations, decides to ask Marjory the Trash Heap for advice. But to do that he'll have to cross through the Gorgs' garden. The Gorgs are a family of ogre-like creatures who grow the radishes the Fraggles eat and the Doozers build with. They're also much larger than the Fraggles, and their son, Junior, has an interest in catching and thumping Fraggles with his huge club. Gobo escapes and meets with Marjory and her rat attendants Philo and Gunge. Marjory welcomes him, as her specialty is solving troubles, pain and woe.

When Gobo says he's afraid of going to Outer Space alone, the Trash Heap tells him bluntly to not be alone. Gobo assembles his friends. They peer into the tunnel, and find Doc has mistakenly thrown Sprocket's ball into the Fraggles' entryway, which scares Boober. Gobo ventures in to retrieve the postcards, but Sprocket spots him and barks. Mokey and Red throw Sprocket's ball to distract him, and the friends celebrate vanquishing the beast and go off to have fun.
