* BreatherLevel: TheArtifact: The enemies (Purity First) are nowhere near as powerful encounter with Isaias Sandoval was meant to take place in Utah, a location that was not finished and its plot was moved to Detroit. If you get his location from Taggart's computer instead of the man himself, the cutscene where you meet him in his hideout still has Adam say, "We're going back to Detroit," despite being in the city already.
* CallForward: Taggart mentions [[UnitedNationsIsASuperPower reorganizing and strengthing the UN]] and giving it the ability to fight problems like terrorism. This is exactly what happens several years on,
as the Belltower mercs, and are just a minor nuisance while you work on more sidequests and advance the plot.NGO is eventually reorganized as UNATCO.

* EngineeredPublicConfession: The player can threaten to do this to Taggart in the convention center, via exposing Isaias' link to the Tyrants.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: The level begins with a cinematic showing a large-scale riot on the streets. When you exit the hotel, however, the most you find is a couple of car fires, and a few police officers guarding an equally few arrested protestors.

** As before, reference is made to a "Patient X" who displays a remarkable tolerance (if not outright immunity) to augmentation rejection symptoms. Darrow's computer even briefly shows a patient file with Adam's picture in it, possibly connecting the reports.
** This level is the first where Adam begins to suffer from seemingly-random glitches, which occurs shortly after he discovered that Tai Yong Medical has planned to roll out a specific batch of biochips under a veil of secrecy...

The level begins with a cinematic showing a large-scale riot on the streets. When you exit the hotel, however, the most you find is a couple of car fires, and a few police officers guarding an equally few arrested protestors.protesters.
** This disparity is further highlighted in the comics, which already ''had'' a large-scale (and deliberately-engineered) riot break out in the downtown core just a short time before this (in the interim between the Highland Park and Hengsha missions). Yet, no evidence of that riot is seen in gameplay, nor is it ever referenced by any resident.
* GuideDangIt: The only way to access the "Acquaintances Forgotten" sidequest on this trip to the city is to have won the social battle with Sarif (which can be tough to do itself without a guide) during the previous visit to Sarif Industries, ''and'' remembered to read all of the emails on Adam's computer (which only triggered the quest on that single visit), which you may or may not have had a reason to check in the rush to get to Hengsha.

Added DiffLines:

* MoonLandingHoax: A female NPC found near the downtown riot site will talk to her friend and express her doubts about the direction the government is heading, citing her belief that the moon landing in 1969 was staged as reason to doubt that the government is being honest with the current social situation.

Added DiffLines:

* RageAgainstTheReflection: Discussed. During the conversation battle with Taggart, Adam will openly admit to a crowd of people (and a live news feed, at that!) that he did this upon seeing himself post-surgery.

Added DiffLines:

* StoryDrivenInvulnerability: Taggart, during the visit to the convention center. After the conversation battle, he cannot be killed, despite not being in one of the designated "no weapon" zones.

Haas isn't seen again after this point. Being a minor NPC he can be mistaken for one of the corpses in Panchaea.

* VideoGameCaringPotential: Depending on whether you previously angered him by bringing up his drug problem at the police station, Haas can be helped by giving him a job with Sarif Industries as a security guard. Unfortunately, if he takes the job, [[MauveShirt he'll later end up getting killed in the line of duty]].

'''Mission 7:'''
!Return to Detroit

Riots have broken out in Detroit, and protestors skirmish with the police in pitched battles.

Malik tells Adam that they will have to land at his hotel instead because there is a riot near the Sarif Industries building, and that Sarif will meet him at the apartment.

Adam disembarks at the hotel and meets Sarif, who tells him that Picus is broadcasting that the company is "breeding super soldiers" and that Bill Taggart is at a nearby convention center holding a press conference urging the United Nations to investigate. Adam asks if it's true, and Sarif replies in the negative. Adam confronts him with all the evidence he gathered from Eliza, and Sarif responds that he had no reason to want the scientists dead because their research would have propelled the company to the top of the Fortune 500.

Sarif inadvertantly lets slip that there are other forces at work, and Adam demands to know a name. Sarif replies that they have many names, but are most commonly referred to as... ''[[AncientConspiracy the Illuminati]]''.

Adam is skeptical, but Sarif tells him that it's no joke. He contends that they were the ones behind the attack, as they wanted to stop the rise of augmentations. Adam tells him that Isaias Sandoval is involved, and Sarif orders him to find out information from Taggart and to do so carefully.

In the hotel lobby, Wayne Haas confronts Adam and reveals that he lost his job after letting Adam into the morgue. Adam smooths over the situation by contacting Sarif and asking him to give Wayne a job as a guard at the company, and the latter wearily accepts.

Adam then experiences sharp pains and software glitches on his way to the conference center. When he arrives, he flashes a VIP card Sarif gave him and enters.

As Taggart is finishing his speech on way human evolution is a fantasy, Adam walks in and announces his presence. He confronts Taggart and asks where Sandoval is, and the Humanity Front leader responds that the accusations are baseless. Adam plays the recording of Sandoval and Namir, and the audience is taken aback. Taggart tries to play it off by accusing Sarif Industries of mismanagement, but Adam counters that he's only interested in finding Sandoval's whereabouts.

A social battle ensues, and Adam eventually convinces Taggart to reveal Sandoval's location - an apartment on Grand River Road. Backstage, Taggart also reveals that Sandoval and Zeke Sanders are brothers, and asks Adam to treat Isaias fairly.

Adam heads to the apartment and discovers that Sandoval has holed himself up in a secret bunker down below. He descends to the sewers and makes it past several armed gunmen, then enters Sandoval's bunker. Inside, Sandoval is watching a speech where Taggart is imploring him to give himself up for his crimes. He reveals to Adam that he was unable to remove the GPL implants and they are likely still broadcasting on a very low frequency. Adam convinces him not to [[DrivenToSuicide shoot himself]], and live for the sake of his family.

Afterwards, Adam tells Pritchard about the frequency, and the latter tells him to head to the apartment while he figures something out.

Adam heads back to his place and gets picked up by Malik on the roof to head back to the Sarif building. Once there, he heads to Sarif's office only to find Hugh Darrow sitting in the chair instead. Darrow discusses his history as a scientist and says that Sarif has asked him to invite members of the United Nations to Panchaea, a mobile platform in the Arctic Ocean, in order to convince humanity to embrace augmentation.

Sarif arrives and asks to speak privately with Adam. Outside, he tells him that Pritchard has tracked down the Sarif scientist Sevchenko's GPL implant in Hengsha and for Adam to head there immediately.

Adam heads back to the helipad, and Malik's copter heads off for Hengsha...

!Tropes:

* ActuallyIAmHim: PlayedWith. Adam repeatedly tells Mrs. Walthers that he ''is'' Adam Jensen, but she refuses to believe it (on account of being senile) and says that the real Adam would only be 12 or 13 years of age at the most. Eventually, Adam gives up and just starts playing along by confirming that he's the man sent to deliver her dinner.
* AllThereInTheManual: The reason why Dr. Markovic isn't present at the LIMB Clinic (and is replaced by another attendant) is covered in the [[Recap/DeusExHumanRevolutionComic comic book tie-in]].
* AncientConspiracy: The Illuminati.
* {{Anvilicious}}: One of the NPC's in Detroit goes on a rant about global warming "needing to be solved", since they've been talking about solving it for decades and it was [[SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped already too late back then]].
* ArbitrarySkepticism: Much like the original game (and in what might also be a CallForward), Adam is instantly skeptical that the Illuminati exist, despite having spent the last couple days investigating a wide-reaching conspiracy and learning that there's a FEMA internment camp, augments who have the same abilities he does (and use them for evil) and seen a boatload of evidence that there's a much bigger force at work.
* BreatherLevel: The enemies (Purity First) are nowhere near as powerful as the Belltower mercs, and are just a minor nuisance while you work on more sidequests and advance the plot.
* ChekhovsGunman:
** If you used the CASIE mod to intimidate Haas about his drug problem previously, he ends up losing his job and attacks you in the lobby of your apartment building upon your return to the city.
** Sanders will also be present in the sewers when the player goes to confront Isaias (though only as a henchman this time).
* ContrivedCoincidence: Zeke 'Ezekiel' Sanders was the man who spearheaded the attack on the manufacturing plant, while his brother, Isaias Sandoval, was the one who removed the GPL implants from the Sarif scientists in a completely unrelated incident. It isn't made clear if either of them knew what the other was doing.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: You can find a mad prophet in the city who preaches that a "gray and deadly plague" is coming on the backs of 12 kings. This is a CallForward to the events of the original game, when Majestic 12 does the same thing with the Gray Death virus.
* CurseCutShort: Taggart initially calls Adam an "impertinent son of a b-" before catching himself and offers to give up Sandoval's whereabouts.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Discussed. Detective Radford refuses to get augmentations because he believes it would make him an "imitation" after being paralyzed. The player can either [[ICannotSelfTerminate end his pain by giving him a fatal morphine shot]] or convincing him to live and take down the people who crippled him.
* DrivenToSuicide: Sandoval, if Adam doesn't convince him otherwise.
* DyingAsYourself: Radford wishes to be [[MercyKill killed]] so he won't have to live with augmentations. The player can convince him otherwise.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** One of the men who crippled Radford begins to mention a "Mr. Da-", but quickly catches himself and says "Mr. Gray".
** Darrow mentions that he owns Panchaea, a geoorbital platform in the Arctic Ocean that is working to solve global warming.
* GaiasLament: Darrow mentions that Panchaea was built to fix global warming, via reducing the high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. [[JediTruth From a certain point of view, that's exactly what happens.]]
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: The level begins with a cinematic showing a large-scale riot on the streets. When you exit the hotel, however, the most you find is a couple of car fires and a fairly civil attitude by both the protestors and police.

She refuses to believe that [[ActuallyIAmHim Adam is the same as the man who is visiting her]], and will happily ramble on about him before asking to give "the deliveryman" a present for him.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: The first thing Adam does upon arriving at his apartment is pour himself a drink.
* InterfaceScrew: The glitches that Adam experiences throughout the level.
* {{Jerkass}}: Radford treats Adam with [[FantasticRacism extreme contempt]] (to the point of repeatedly calling him a "robot" and "metal corpse"), even though Adam stopped the man who shot him, is perfectly civil towards him and is trying to save his life. He later turns into a JerkWithAHeartOfGold after he tells Adam to protect Mrs. Walthers.
* TheLostLenore: Taggart reveals that an augmented addict killed his wife, which led to his hatred of augmentation and the creation of Humanity Front.
* MadOracle: The raving homeless man talking about various prophecies. However, he [[TheCuckoolanderWasRight turns out to be right about everything]].
* MythologyGag: The "Smash the State" sidequest is named after the password seen in the first datapad found on Liberty Island in the original game.
* NotSoDifferent: If the "Discredit" choices are taken in the social battle with Taggart, Adam points out that he is just as bad as Sandoval for refusing to tell the truth.
* VideoGameCaringPotential: Depending on whether you previously angered him by bringing up his drug problem at the police station, Haas can be helped by giving him a job with Sarif Industries. [[MauveShirt However]]...

* YouAreACreditToYourRace: When Adam convinces Radford not to end his own life.
--> '''Radford''': You've got a lot of heart... for a robot.
