!Episode 01 - Railgun

After taking a shortcut through some alleyways, Saten has found herself getting chased by a bunch of {{Delinquents}}. Uiharu and Kuroko are just coming to her aid when Mikoto shows up and solves the problem in [[ShockAndAwe her own characteristic way]].

Sitting outside Tokiwadai the next day, Mikoto gets a scolding from Kuroko, who chides her to be more circumspect with her powers. Kuroko points out that, as a Level 5, she is an object of admiration and envy -- but also [[{{Foreshadowing}} a magnet for unscrupulous groups who might seek to exploit her]]. Mikoto just brushes off the lecture. In the meantime, Saten, Uiharu and Haruue head towards the Garden of Learning to meet up with them.

Waiting in the school library, Mikoto runs into Kongou, Wannai and Awatsuki, and they chat briefly about their summer homework. As they do, they notice a curvy girl with long blonde hair surrounded by fawning hangers-on: Misaki Shokuhou, a.k.a. Mental Out -- Tokiwadai's ''other'' Level 5 esper, ranked fifth in Academy City. Mikoto grimaces, but the others comment on Shokuhou's popularity, noting that she's called the 'Queen' of Tokiwadai. As they talk, Shokuhou glances over at them and smirks.

After the others leave, she comes over and greets Mikoto cattily. Mikoto tries to ignore Shokuhou's needling until she tries to pick up a small shopping bag by Mikoto's feet. Grabbing it back, Mikoto asks the other girl if she's looking for a fight. Shokuhou concedes that a direct fight would be a problem for her, since Mikoto's constant EM field blocks her ability. To demonstrate, she pulls a TV remote half out of her bag and does something that seems to give Mikoto a painful electric shock. Then she says that Mikoto would have trouble if she had to fight ''everyone'', manipulating the remote again -- and suddenly, everyone in the library stands and turns towards Mikoto with identical [[MindControlEyes creepy, vacant expressions]]. After a moment, Shokuhou releases them with a smile and says she's only joking. Mikoto, scowling, calls her ability depraved. Before she leaves, Shokuhou says she's noticed Mikoto making new friends lately, and [[AlphaBitch warns against encroaching onto her territory]].

Uiharu, Saten and Haruue meet Mikoto and Kuroko at the school entrance, having bought various high-class sweets in the Garden of Learning's shops. For her part, Mikoto is carrying the shopping bag from earlier. Leaving the Garden, they head over to a hospital in one of the main districts. When they arrive, they run into Anti-Skill officers Aiho Yomikawa and Tsuzuri Tessou, who are there to take custody of a criminal who's been receiving treatment.

The girls proceed to visit Banri Edasaki, who is [[Recap/ACertainScientificRailgunEp24DearMyFriends still recovering]] from the Poltergeist incident, in a room on the top floor. After chatting and enjoying the sweets, Mikoto ducks out with Kuroko, Uiharu and Saten, ostensibly to get some drinks. Heading downstairs, they pass a rehabilitation ward where several people are undergoing physical therapy. Noticing one person struggle to practice walking, Mikoto seems to remember something from her childhood, but snaps out of it after a moment. She tells the others that she'd like to make their 'surprise' more memorable, and suggests buying some flowers from the hospital shop. As they head over to it, though, Mikoto realizes that she's left her shopping bag in Edasaki's room. Back in the room, Haruue notices the bag and picks it up, although she doesn't open it.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Skill prisoner is broken out of his room by a pair of accomplices dressed as orderlies; they retreat into the elevator and head up. An alarm goes off, prompting Kuroko and Uiharu to go and confer with Anti-Skill, while Mikoto and Saten head back to the top floor. In Edasaki's room, she and Haruue hear the alarm; Haruue, still absently clutching Mikoto's bag, goes out into the hallway to find out what's happening -- just in time to meet the criminals they as rush past.

Moments later, Yomikawa and Tessou arrive to find the criminals heading up onto the roof. Mikoto and Saten show up just as Edasaki stumbles out of her room to say that Haruue has disappeared; Yomikawa informs them that the criminals have taken Haruue hostage. Mikoto and Saten help Edasaki back into her room, then Mikoto climbs out the window and [[WallCrawl up the wall]] to the roof above.

The criminals have just boarded a helicopter on the roof, dragging Haruue with them. However, they find they're unable to take off: Mikoto has climbed onto the roof and is using her electromagnetism to hold the helicopter in place. The criminals divert her by throwing Haruue out and over the edge of the building. Mikoto tries to grab her and misses; but Saten, who has climbed onto the fire escape, just manages to catch her. Mikoto grabs onto Saten and the three manage to hold on long enough for Kuroko to arrive and teleport them onto the roof. Everyone is safe... but then Haruue apologies, revealing that she dropped Mikoto's shopping bag inside the helicopter, which is now heading off into the distance.

An exasperated Mikoto grabs Kuroko, who reluctantly teleports the pair of them after the helicopter at high speed. On board, the criminals are congratulating each other when it occurs to them to wonder about that [[ExplainExplainOhCrap Electromaster in the Tokiwadai uniform]]... Appearing ahead of the helicopter, Mikoto dives head-first through the air and fires off her namesake railgun at it, severing the rotor and sending the craft falling from the sky. Kuroko teleports the occupants -- and Mikoto's bag -- to safety right before it crashes into a river, while Mikoto lands on one of Academy City's wind turbines.

Back in Edasaki's room later, Mikoto and the others give her the shopping bag, saying it's for her. Inside is a Sakugawa Middle School uniform, for when Edasaki gets out of hospital.

Meanwhile, various onlookers are looking curiously at the helicopter wreckage in the river. One of them, [[HeroOfAnotherStory a certain spiky-haired high school boy]], remarks that [[BorrowedCatchPhrase there's never a dull moment in Academy City]]...
