* The Slime spirit is a Stamina Battle against a team of five blue Kirbys. Once they're defeated, a giant Kirby (representing a King Slime) will attack. In most games, packs of slimes will band together to form a King Slime if left not defeated quickly enough. Of course, the Slime spirit can be enhanced into a King Slime at max level.

* Slime is represented by a group of blue Kirbies, who emphasize neutral air attacks as the attack that involves the least amount of limb. most of them are small, but the last one is a lot bigger to represent the King Slime, which is what the Slime can become if enough are present.
* Liquid Metal Slime is represented by a blue Kirby who has been turned metallic and given high speed, defense, super armor that prevents flinching, evasive AI, a Franklin Badge to reflect all projectiles, and a short time limit. All of this works to capture its role as the original difficult-to-injure MetalSlime that would frequently escape battle before being defeated.
* The Golem is represented by a giant yellow Rob that has increased punch and kick power with super armor. Most of these traits help represent the raw power and fighting style that the Golem has, and it also randomly goes to sleep as a callback to the original Dragon Warrior.

* Sandshrew is a fight against a small yellow Bowser in the desert-styled Mushroomy Kingdom. It also loves the Pitfalls that spawn to show off its digging abilities. When you equip it, you start off with a Screw Attack, allowing you to perform a RollingAttack no matter who you play as.
* Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno's combined spirit is represented by three Lucases who mainly use PSI attacks that match up with their Japanese names and elements: PK Fire, PK Thunder, and PK Freeze, which is also a reference to the three main fire, ice, and electric moves (Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam).
* Kangaskhan is a brown Bowser who is assisted by an Iggy a Larry to represent its child that is it's always seen carrying. When enhanced into Mega Kangaskhan, it has a chance of granting its equipped fighter a Double Final Smash, just as the form's signature ability in its home series allows it to attack twice in one turn. It's also got very high stats for an Ace, being in the low 10,000s, which is slightly higher than a couple of weaker legendary spirits. This is possibly referencing how infamous Mega Kangaskhan was as a GameBreaker.Kangaskhan's infamy.

* Blastoise is a giant version of its first form, Squirtle, with a Super Scope to represent its cannons. It will also gain defense buffs, referencing its defensive stats.
* Metapod is represented by a Yoshi who mostly defends, and gains increased defense after a while, mirroring Metapod's Harden move. The floor is sticky, since Metapod is a Bug-type evolved from Caterpie, who uses String Shot to slow down opponents.

* Eevee is represented by 3 Yoshis in red/blue/yellow colors, all with Super Leaves equipped, with yellow starting with a Screw Attack and red starting with a Superspicy Curry. These Yoshis represent Eevee's first 3 evolutions (Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon). Blue Yoshi also starts with a Poké Ball that is guaranteed to send out Eevee itself when the fight starts.
* Porygon is represented as a wireframe Little Mac accompanied by VideoGame/VirtuaFighter[='=]s Akira to represent its primitive computer graphics body.
* Snorlax is a giant, black K. Rool that doesn't do anything except eat food every few seconds, just like the Pokémon itself does nothing but sleep and eat unless forcefully awakened. The match is set on Tortimer Island, possibly referencing the island where Ash caught his Snorlax in the anime. King K. Rool also recovers health over time, referencing Snorlax's common connection with the item Leftovers (and, by extension, that of its pre-evolution, Munchlax).

* Cubone's battle takes place on Luigi's Mansion (as a stand-in for the similarly ghost-filled Pokémon Tower) and spawns Boomerangs (which naturally operate just like Cubone's signature Bonemerang attack).
* Arbok is Ridley on a poisoned floor. Your attack power is reduced during the fight, as if it was using its Intimidate ability on you.

With the introduction of Spirits, a wide variety of beloved video game characters are represented through the playable cast and different rulesets to evoke their personalities and abilities. Below are notable examples of the different spirits you fight and how their battles reference their origins.

* Celeste is represented as Jigglypuff who heavily favors using Rest, referencing how Celeste, as an owl, can be found sleeping during the daytime when you visit the museum. This Jigglypuff also wears a bow just like Celeste does.
* Tom Nook is represented by an Incineroar who gets healed from attacks and has the ability to perform random Final Smashes — a reference to how unfair Tom Nook's debts can be.
* Tom's kids, Timmy and Tommy, are 2 Villagers with raccoon tails and favor going after items, since they need stock for their shop.
* The Able Sisters are represented by three Sonics, who start with the Drill Arm. Obviously, the Able sisters are all hedgehogs, like Sonic, and the Drill Arm is arguably the closest thing to a sewing machine in the game.
* Digby is represented by Isabelle (wearing his clothes even); makes sense since they're siblings.
* Serena is a Palutena due to both being goddesses. She's fought in the Fountain of Dreams as she's the goddess of a fountain, and hammers appear, being the closest thing in Smash to the axes she can grant.
* Katrina the fortune teller is another Palutena fight, but with both fighters taking max damage after a few seconds. Perhaps she saw some bad luck in your future.
* Joan is a blue Peach who favors her down special (pulling up vegetables from the ground, as Joan is a turnip trader), and is accompanied by a dark-skinned female Villager ally.
* Lloid is represented by a team of two Villagers who favor their side specials (Lloid Rocket), and two Isabelles who favor their down special (Lloid Trap).
* Copper & Booker are two Duck Hunts who like to shield, and gain a bonus to their defense after taking a certain amount of damage. [[spoiler:(They're guard dogs.)]] Since they tend to be found on the outskirts of town in the games they appear in, their battle takes place on Bridge of Eldin. They are a Master Spirit who can teach you a style that dramatically boosts your defense but also dramatically reduces your offense; again, .
* Brewster is a battle against Falco on Luigi's Mansion, representing his café. Food items will periodically spawn during the battle, summoning either Isabelle or a Villager as backup. His spirit grants immunity to Sleep-inducing floors, as if he's serving you a nice, warm cup of coffee.
* Summoning K.K. Slider (as DJ K.K.) requires the cores of a Labrador Retriever (a breed of dog) and 9-Volt and 18-Volt, who, like K.K., moonlight as disc jockeys. After enhancement, he turns into his normal guitar-playing incarnation.
* Summoning Blathers requires the cores of a T-Rex, a Beetle (the car from Excitebots: Trick Racing, not the bug), and a Fishman. Blathers is a museum curator, and he collects all kinds of weird fish, bug, and fossil samples. Like Celeste, his battle is fought with a sleep-inducing floor, since he's also an owl.
* Summoning Tortimer requires the cores of Old Man Lobber, a fellow elderly anthropomorphic animal, and a Koopa Troopa, a fellow turtle.
* Dr. Shrunk is represented by a pink Luigi who taunts a lot, as his job in the games is to tell "jokes" that teach players how to emote.
* Redd, the shady furniture-selling kitsune, is represented by a Fox who gets items drawn to him.

* Loki is represented by an orange Sheik, the latter's speed and Needles representing the former's nimbleness and throwing cards. The fight takes place on the Umbra Clock Tower, much like the battle against Loki's EvilTwin[[spoiler:[=/=]EnemyWithout]], Loptr. Furthermore, the Sheik will constantly try to use the Stopwatches that spawn during the fight, referencing Loki's power over "the Remembrance of Time". Lastly, his Spirit blesses the owner with a Black Hole item, alluding to his "Power Over Nothingness" that he uses towards the end of Bayonetta 2.
* Speaking of Loptr, he appears as a Spirit in his "Prophet" form, represented by a Bayonetta in a similarly white costume with increased punching power, representing the phantasmal fists that he creates to attack during all his boss fights. In World of Light, [[spoiler:he appears in the Mysterious Dimension as a fake answer to the trivia question that asks "Who created the Subspace Army and waged war?". While he didn't create the Subspace Army, he did help escalate the war between the Lumen Sages and Umbra Witches by murdering Rosa and driving Balder to madness]].
* Jeanne is simply a battle against Bayonetta in the red alternate costume based on her (with her boss theme, "Red and Black", playing to boot); unsurprising, since they share most of their abilities. She's also strengthened in her ranged attacks, nodding to how her bullets are powered up in comparison to Bayonetta's during her boss fights. She can be enhanced into Cutie J, an alternate costume that she can wear as a playable character, which is in itself a modified version of the outfit she wears when she stops fooling around during her last battle. Furthermore, Cutie J's Easier Dodging ability is based on how Jeanne, as a playable character, can dodge endlessly without cooldown.
* Cereza is a tiny-sized Isabelle that represents her innocence and being unable to defend herself. She's accompanied by Bayonetta, who assumed a motherly role to her as well as being her future self. The stage of her battle, Luigi's Mansion, is a nod to the similarly mysterious citadels of Vigrid where she is found.
* Rodin, the weapon-making bartender, is summoned with café owner Brewster and sentient sword Aegislash. [[spoiler:He can also be enhanced into his BonusBoss form, titled "The Infinite One", turning him into a Legend rank Spirit due to him being considered a PhysicalGod. His Critical Health Attack ability is based on how he transforms into his Infinite One form after taking enough damage during his battle in Bayonetta 2.]]
* Balder is fought on the Umbra Clock Tower as a male Robin in a white costume. Robin isn't quite giant (though he's called giant by the game), but he is taller than his default, to reference Balder's notable height. He can be enhanced into Father Balder, the form he takes as a boss after absorbing Cereza in the original Bayonetta, and comes with the Franklin Badge Equipped effect, referencing the DeflectorShields that he uses to block Bayonetta's bullets during his boss fight.
* The Masked Lumen is represented by Meta Knight, a similarly masked man with a penchant for golden blades, with a matching white and yellow color scheme.
* Fortitudo is represented by fellow fire-breathing dragon Charizard, with Low Gravity in effect to reference the gravity-defying climax of his boss fight.
* The Mooks Affinities are represented by several copies of Pit, a fellow angel. They are fought on the Umbra Clock Tower with "One of a Kind" as the theme music, recreating the opening of the first Bayonetta. Their Novice rank is no doubt a reference to how, in their home game, they're the most basic of enemy types, and they have a tendency to suffer physical abuse at the hands of Bayonetta.
* The serpentine Inspired angels are represented by a horde of Mewtwo, whose tail gives it a serpentine appearance, with Rocket Belts to replicate their Flight. Like with the Affinities, the battle takes place on the Umbra Clock Tower with "One of a Kind" as the theme music to replicate the opening of the first Bayonetta. In reference to the Inspired that attacks Bayonetta on a spiraling bridge in the first Bayonetta, .
* Gomorrah, the Devourer of the Divine, is represented by a Bayonetta who gets a sudden Final Smash, which involves summoning Gomorrah himself, with the player taking sudden damage in order to make the Final Smash's instant-kill condition easier to meet.
* Madama Butterfly is represented by a Bayonetta who loves to use Smash Attacks, which summon the demoness's limbs through Wicked Weaves. Her Spirit Battle's Poison Fog hazard and her Spirit's unique Poison Heal ability is a nod to how, in VideoGame/AnarchyReigns, Bayonetta's Wicked Weaves can inflict Poison. As a being of darkness from Inferno, .
* The flowery demoness Alraune is a Bayonetta with a strengthened Lip's Stick, and gives a Fire Flower when equipped.
* IntrepidReporter Luka is represented by a Greninja. Luka is well known for showing up at odd and inopportune times, and is considered so unpredictable that "not even a god (with the ability to see into the future) can see him coming". Fitting for the similarly unpredictable Greninja.

* Dracula is an enhanceable spirit; however, you get a support spirit of his monster form at the same time, so who or what could he possibly enhance into if not that? [[spoiler:Soma Cruz, his reincarnation.]]
* The Mummy is two Sheiks with super armor who prefer throwing you, a nod to how you fight the Mummy in the original Castlevania. Fittingly enough, .
* With the Creature and Flea Man, you fight a giant Mii Brawler wearing a hockey mask, who represents the Creature, and Diddy Kong, who represents Flea Man, with an electrified floor, referencing their original boss fight. Much like with the Mummy, .
* Death is represented by Robin with Death's Scythe, while you are hard to launch, but periodically take sudden damage. This is, once again, recreating the original boss fight with himDeath is infamous for constantly summoning swarms of sickles which are tough to avoid, and like the other 2 bosses, .
* A Medusa Head is represented by a floaty Meta Knight, with five small Mewtwos representing Medusa's snake hair (Alternatively, Meta Knight is the actual Medusa and the Mewtwo are regular Medusa Heads). The Medusa Heads are infamously hard to deal with without timing your jumps carefully, so this fight enforces this by occasionally slowing you down. (The slowdown may also reference how some Medusa Heads can turn the player character to stone (therefore stifling their movement) in Castlevania games that include StandardStatusEffects.)

[[AC:Dracula's Curse]]
* Alucard is fought alongside Simon, meant to be Trevor Belmont, with Alucard appearing as an assist trophy. "Dracula's Castle" is the theme for this fight, much like how it served as Alucard's in VideoGame/CastlevaniaJudgment.
* And speaking of Trevor, the fight against him has him as Simon with Palutena and Sheik as stand-ins for Sypha and Grant, with Alucard also appearing.

[[AC:Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night]]
* Shaft is represented as Robin who favors using Nosferatu, a reference to Shaft being a sorcerer specializing in dark magic. Additionally, his occasionally turning invisible references the TeleportSpam he uses in the fight. He's assisted by Richter, who he mind-controlled to fight against Alucard.
* Maria, as Zelda, is fought alongside a tiny Falco, Incineroar, and Charizard as her Familiarsrepresenting Suzaku, Byakko, and Seiryuu respectively... sadly, no tiny Bowser is there to be Genbu in battle. She also starts the battle with a Cucco, as her regular attacks were birds. She is also a Spirit who can be enhanced upon hitting Level 99; in this case, she transforms into her older form from SOTN. Adult Maria grants an extra midair jump when equipped; this references Maria's ability to DoubleJump in all of her playable appearances (most notably Rondo of Blood, where the other playable character, Richter, lacked this ability).

[[AC:Curse of Darkness]]
* Hector being represented by Robin doesn't make much sense, but the other conditions fit well — lots of battering items appear, reflecting Hector's skill as a blacksmith, and Ridley backs him up, representing a Devil-type Innocent Devil.

[[AC:Portrait of Ruin]]
* Charlotte Aulin is represented as Zelda who favors using Din's Fire, a reference to her use of fire tomes. She is then joined by Richter, referencing Portrait of Ruin's whip-wielding co-star Jonathan Morris and possibly referencing [[spoiler:the Whip's Memory fight and the unlockable Richter Mode after beating the game on normal]]. When equipped by the player, her trait is to improve the power of magic attacks, a nod to Charlotte's status as a ChildProdigy in the study of magic.

[[AC:Order of Ecclesia]]
* Shanoa is represented by Bayonetta in her "witch with no memories" look. This is because they've both got outfits that expose the back and they've both lost their memories. Heavy wind is in effect because the cover of Order of Ecclesia has Shanoa's hair blowing in the wind to expose her back. Bayonetta will also sometimes get access to her final smash suddenly, as Bayonetta's hair extending straight upwards to summon Gamorrah is basically a more extreme version of how Shanoa lifts up her hair to expose her back to absorb glyphs.

* Donkey Kong & Lady is a bright giant Donkey Kong in a timed stamina battle with a red Peach representing Pauline as an ally, seemingly trying to prevent kidnapping from happening, as implied by the limited time and how the battle is lost if the ally is KO'd.
* Donkey Kong Jr. is a yellow-haired DK whose throws are more effective, as he moves around mainly by grabbing and swinging on vines. After a little while, a similarly-colored giant DK (his father, a.k.a. the one from the original Donkey Kong) will appear to back him up, but you only need to defeat Junior to win the battle.
* Stanley (Donkey Kong 3) is a blue Villager with a Gust Bellows representing his bug sprayer.

* A good chunk of the Donkey Kong Spirits in the World of Light are located in the DK Island sub-map, which recreates the whole Kongo Jungle map from the original DKC and has Spirit fights representing its levels (with Diddy taking the place of Very Gnawty's Lair). Cranky, Funky, and Candy are all fought in their respective buildings, the "Reptile Rumble" cave level is represented through a Zinger-possessed Pikachu (they share a yellow-black color scheme, and the Pikachu is holding an Unira, a spiky enemy) in the Great Cave Offensive, and the spot where "Coral Capers" took place is guarded by Enguarde the Swordfish in The Great Bay.
* Swanky Kong is represented as Donkey Kong, obviously, but his fixation on items references Swanky's love for fancy things. The items in question are Poké Balls, a nod to the circus game that he hosted in VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry3DixieKongsDoubleTrouble.
* Kaptain K. Rool is obviously represented as King K. Rool, who uses his dark red color scheme to simulate his coat. In this stamina battle, his "Blunderbuss" special move — already a reference to Kaptain K. Rool — is more powerful, he turns invisible after a while (much like he does in the source game), and is fought on Battleship Halberd, which represents the Flying Krock.
* Baron K. Roolenstein can be summoned with the cores of Dr. Crygor (a fellow scientist), Kritter (a fellow Kremling), and The Creature & Flea Man (The Creature sharing Baron K.'s stitched-up appearance).
* Klaptrap is represented as a small blue King K. Rool in Kongo Jungle. As the fight progresses, multiple Klaptrap Assist Trophies come into the battle to attack the player.
* Squawks is represented by the Duck Hunt Duo set in the Great Cave Offensive, the closest thing to a cave in the game. The stage will also be covered in fog at some point to reference his flashlight (which you needed to use) in his intro game.
* Cranky gets to enjoy a white Donkey Kong body while music from the original VideoGame/DonkeyKong plays, referencing his backstory as the original DK who kidnapped Pauline and fought with Mario all these decades ago. Though he still dozes off due to his age, which causes the floor to make you fall asleep if you stay on it for too long.
* Enguarde is a blue Corrin who prefers to use his Dash Attack, being the closest to an attack a swordfish like him can do. You also drown near-instantly in the fight; as a fish, he swims far better than you could ever hope to.
* Funky Kong is a battle against Captain Falcon on a battlefield filled with Bullet Bills serving as Jumbo Barrel planes for him and the Donkey and Diddy fighters assisting him. When he's unlocked as one of the shops, he'll mainly sell vehicle-related Spirits.
* Professor Chops is represented by a stronger Donkey Kong in his white colors, referencing the Super Kong feature in both games.
* Rambi is a white Donkey Kong who has a damaging dash, since whenever he is playable, he always charges through the stage and barrels through enemies, being a strong rhinoceros. When equipped by the player, his trait is to improve your speed.
* Expresso is a Falco with increased speed and slow falling on a slippery stage. This sums up Expresso perfectly, as he is fast, but hard to stop (and, y'know, a bird).
* Winky is a green Greninja, as both are frogs, and he only attacks by jumping and falling on you, much like in his home game.
* Ellie is a team of Squirtle who attack with water, similarly to how she gathers water in her trunk to attack enemies. Ellie is also fought in Jungle Japes, a stage reminiscent of Lakeside Limbo from her debut game, where you encounter her for the first time, due to its wooden structures over a river.
* Dixie Kong is summoned by the cores of Tiny Kong (her sister) and Candy Kong. On the spirit board, she is represented by Isabelle, having a similar ponytail and Diddy Kong (her boyfriend) in his Dixie Kong color palette. When enhanced, she becomes Dixie and Kiddie Kong, the playable characters from Kiddie's debut. This also increases the power of thrown items, one of the main means of attack in the DKC games.

* Tiny Kong is a Diddy Kong that occasionally turns tiny, with strong winds and low gravity. The winds and gravity reference her status as the best platformer of the Kongs, and turning tiny is what Tiny Kong is known for.
* Chunky Kong is DK with increased power with his punches and kicks, which reference Chunky's significant strength.

[[AC:MOTHER/EarthBound Beginnings]]
* Ninten is four Nesses whose PSI attacks are boosted, and whose Final Smashes build up quickly. Since Ness is Ninten's successor, it would make sense that he would possess him, and the battle is set in Magicant, which is the main hub for the game.
* Lloyd is represented by Villager (who will rely on Pun Lloid), and assisted by a red R.O.B. This references EVE, an extremely powerful red robot that acts as a GuestStarPartyMember for most of the final area of MOTHER/[=EarthBound=] Beginnings, Mt. Itoi. Explosives appear commonly in this battle, as Lloyd doesn't have PSI and relies on weapons, firearms, and explosives.
* As for EVE herself, she's represented by a Giant Red R.O.B. at Frigate Orpheon, the Parasite Queen's glass prison mirroring Giegue's capsule.
* Ana's battle takes place in Magicant with Ness standing in as Ninten, fitting as he's a Ninten Expy. Ana herself is the pink version of the Villager. The battle is a Stamina battle, as all battles in the Mother series are.
* Teddy is a Little Mac that comes equipped with a Killing Edge. Both characters have a similar muscle build, and the Killing Edge is a nod to the fact that he is the only party member to use a proper weapon in his home game.

* Buzz Buzz is represented as a very tiny Mr. Game and Watch with 300% damage, essentially letting you kill him with a single swat like Lardna Minch did. When you equip him, you end up starting with 30% damage, making you die more easily.
* Ness's father is represented by an invisible Snake, referencing his status as TheVoice.
* Paula's spirit is a Villager with Ness accompanying her. Villager gets healed periodically, referencing Ness's Lifeup PSI and how Ness often has to heal Paula thanks to her low health. Ness even starts off with a Final Smash, which has her as part of it.
* Jeff's spirit is against two Inklings who prefer using projectile items, while Jeff himself periodically shows up via Assist Trophy. Inklings mostly use firearms, much like Jeff, and the preference for these items is because of his tinkering knowledge. The ink-based weaponry of the Inklings also recalls Jeff's Slime Generator weapon.
* Poo is a Ryu with powered up physical attacks and movement speed, referencing his status as the price of his home, and physical strength in battle. The stage is also set in Skyworld to represent his home.
* Flying Man's spirit is a stamina battle in Magicant against Ness and a Flying Man-styled Mii Brawler with 5 stocks. This is to replicate how Ness can team up with a Flying Man while in Magicant with the caveats of there only being five of them and all of them being capable of suffering permadeath.
* Master Belch is a battle with Wario, while the floor is sticky and you get low defense. The sticky floor is a reference to the swamp that he was once fought in, and the defense lowering is a reference to one of his attacks.

* Salsa the monkey is represented by Diddy Kong and is accompanied by Wario as a stand-in for the just-as-greedy Fassad. Banana peels also appear everywhere, a reference to Fassad's tendency to pull out a banana, eat it, and carelessly toss away the peel . The stage is Gerudo Valley, representing the desert that Chapter 3 of Mother 3 began in.
* Duster's spirit is in the form of a pink Luigi that prefers to kick (as Duster does) while the stage is covered in fog (a reference to the abandoned and ghost-infested Osohe Castle). Both characters also have pretty bad luck, including incidents where they briefly turned into completely different people (Duster via amnesia in chapter 4 of VideoGame/Mother3, Luigi via brainwashing in VideoGame/SuperPaperMario).
* Kumatora's Spirit is represented by a Lucas in his Duster alt equipped with a Fire Flower while the floor is frozen on New Pork City Battlefield version. The Fire Flower and frozen floor represent her PK Fire and PK Freeze, the two PSI moves she starts with respectively, while the Duster alt references him as the main character of Chapter 2 when Kumatora is first met.
* Hinawa is represented by Zelda, and accompanied by two Lucases using both the regular and Claus palettes, with the fight being on Yoshi's Island and every fighter being easy to launch. The whole thing references the entirety of Chapter 6. On a more morbid note, the fact that it's Yoshi's Island that makes up the battlefield may be a subtle nod to .
* Claus is Lucas in Claus's colors, but when you beat him, a Metal Lucas with a beam sword appears, representing the recurring antagonist, the Masked Man. On top of that, there's also the placement of Claus' spirit relative to the entire Adventure Mode.
* Masked Man's spirit is obtained by clearing Adventure Mode. [[spoiler:If the player opts to go for the TrueFinalBoss on their first playthrough, this means the player has had to defeat Claus, Masked Man's true identity. Furthermore, if one considers Porky to be the final challenge of MOTHER 3 and Masked Man to be the PostFinalBoss, it makes sense that Masked Man is found after a final challenge.]]
** The Spirit Battle itself, if you challenge it on the spirit board after you get the spirit the first time, is represented by Lucas in the Masked Man Alt with increased power and a fast-charging Final Smash meter fought on New Pork City Omega. All of his attacks in Mother 3 are very powerful and hurt a lot in all of the fights with him and the Final Destination format of stages is used for most of the final battles in Smash, .
* Boney (who is a dog) is represented by Duck Hunt, with Lucas, his owner, assisting him in battle.
* Much like Ness's dad, Lucas's father, Flint, is represented by Snake. He fights with one of his sons, Claus, and fights with a lava floor, likely as a call-back to how the first part of the chapter he's playable in takes place in a forest fire.
* The Absolutely Safe Capsule's spirit must be summoned using the core of a Mr. Saturn spirit, and a whopping six shield-type cores. This is because the Absolutely Safe Capsule was developed by Dr. Andonuts and the Mr. Saturns, and it's the ultimate defense, keeping whatever is inside absolutely safe from whatever's outside. [[spoiler:And it keeps whatever is outside absolutely safe from whatever's inside. * Black Shadow is represented by a giant Ganondorf, presumably referencing the popular fan idea of having Black Shadow take Ganondorf's current Falcon-inspired moveset under the idea that it would fit him better due to actually being from the same series as Falcon. Protecting him is a Captain Falcon with Blood Falcon's colours, referencing how Black Shadow was the one who created him.
* Bio Rex has steaks appear in large numbers, what with him being a major carnivore who talks about wanting to obtain rare meat and all.
* Pico is a Bowser with an enhanced ray gun. Pico's special cutscene in GX showed that he was quite proficient with firearms, and his backstory in F-Zero X[='=]s manual is that he's a soldier and a hitman. Also, he's a turtle.
* Jack Levin's fight amusingly has you face a small army of Wii Fit Trainers after defeating the stand-in for Jack (that being Ken, who is not very different personality-wise) to represent his rabid, angry fangirls due to his status as a pop idol.
* Mighty Gazelle is represented by a gray Mega Man (another robot) on the Mute City SNES stage with an electrified floor. His attacks are more powerful than normal, but he starts the fight at 30% damage, a reference to how his Red Gazelle sacrifices body strength for speed.
* Jody Summer, a member of the Galactic Federation and known Expy of Samus Aran, is naturally represented by the bounty hunter in her Zero Suit, who is also faster and lighter in order to reflect the White Cat's stats. She is accompanied by a white and pink Captain Falcon as well, with this particular color scheme being based on hers to begin with.
* Dr. Stewart, a surgeon, is represented by none other than Dr. Mario, who in this case is capable of replenishing his health over time.

* The Pegasus Sisters are a trio of Lucinas with colors that represent each; red for Est, purple for Catria (who still has blue hair), and green for Palla. They are fought in Skyworld, being flying units in their games. Their fighting style favors aerial attacks, and will occasionally deal critical hits to simulate their Triangle Attack.

* Linde is a female Robin, a fellow magic user, with an electrified floor, to represent her Aura tome being a light spell.
* Jagen is represented by a Ganondorf who starts out with 60% damage simulating him being a CrutchCharacter who is weak and feeble beyond the early game, but has increased attack and defense power to make up for it, as he's a member of the Paladin PrestigeClass.
* Medeus uses a purple Ridley, which somewhat resembles his Shadow Dragon form in Mystery of the Emblem and its remake.
* Draug is a blue King K. Rool with super armor and increased defense, but moves very slowly, as is expected for characters of his archetype.

[[AC:Gaiden/Shadows of Valentia]]

* Deirdre is Palutena, and your attack power is reduced. Both characters are either gods, or related to gods, and the attack reduction is a reference to the Silence Staff she comes with.

[[AC:Thracia 776]]
* Leif is represented by Roy (which is odd, considering Marth is the one who has an alt based off of Leif), and his attacks have a chance of landing a critical hit, referencing the Critical skill he possesses in Genealogy. He also heals over time during battle, referencing the Light Brand's ability to heal its user in his game.

[[AC:Binding Blade]]

* Nino is represented by a Female Robin whose magic attacks are powered up, no doubt a nod to Nino's prowess as a mage. The Female Robin prefers to use Elwind, referencing Nino's classification as a Wind Mage in Fire Emblem Heroes.
* Eliwood is, of course, represented by none other than his own son Roy, in a lava stage, referencing the fire motif of his signature weapon, Durandal.
* Lyn is represented by Zero Suit Samus with a Killing Edge, representing her Sol Katti, set in the Gaur Plains, akin to her homeland of the Sacae plains, with her Assist Trophy appearing. She's also an enhanceable spirit in the appearance of the Einherjar of her in Awakening[='=]s DLC.
* Hector is summonable using the core of his daughter Lilina.

She's also paired with an Ike dressed in white, who is most likely meant to be Ephraim, as the two have the same English voice actor.

* Lon'qu is a Chrom who wields a Killing Edge that also has increased power to sword attacks, referencing his status as a MasterSwordsman. His Spirit also gives an equipped Killing Edge, as it's his WeaponOfChoice.
* Tharja is Lucina using her specific PaletteSwap while the stage is poisoned and she has increased power to her specials, representing Tharja's mastery of dark magic.
* Walhart is a stamina battle with a red Ganondorf with super armor, which fits nicely with Walhart's image as a mighty conqueror who values strength.
* Anna is represented by a red Lucina who attracts items to her, since Anna is a merchant and all. As her first playable appearance in Awakening made her part of the sword-wielding Trickster class, only the Beam Sword and Killing Edge appear as items here.
* Severa is Lucina using her mother Cordelia's PaletteSwap who has the ability to gain random critical hits, referencing her Mercenary class. Severa herself is key to summoning her mother Cordelia.

In addition, the heavy winds blowing during his fight is a reference to the fact that his Fujin Yumi can control the wind.
* Camilla is a black Female Corrin in a poisonous fog accompanied by a Charizard that represents her Wyvern, with the fog referencing her wyvern's venomous breath. Being in Corrin is also likely a nod to her attachment to them. The only items are X Bombs, which unleash an explosive blast in a cross shape. This references an ability Camilla has in Birthright in which she can send blasts of flame down corridors when fought as a boss toward the end of the game.
* Ryoma is a red Chrom, in what could be a potential CastingGagboth are voiced by Creator/MatthewMercer in English, with an electrified floor as a nod to the electric properties of his blade.
* Of course, Garon would be possessing the also tyrannical and conquering Ganondorf.
* Azura is represented by a female default Corrin in the Fountain of Dreams, a nod to her connection to water. The original version of Lost in Thoughts All Alone plays and she gains access to two Final Smashes at once, being both a nod to her Songstress class ability to give units an additional turn, as well as making it seem Corrin is in a battle being helped by her from a distance. What's more, in Adventure, she is the spirit that guards the captured Corrin.

The fight is on a time limit to represent when the Reset Bomb will hit the forest. She's also using the 6th voice type for the Mii Fighters, as it's provided by her own Japanese voice actress.
* There's an actual ChestMonster in the Temple of Light area, where opening a chest gets you into a fight with a Mimicutie spirit instead of loot. Said Mimicutie is played by Zero Suit Samus, because... you know.
* Being Palutena's soldiers, of course the Centurions would be represented by smaller Pits. To reference that they can fly (unlike him), they prefer to attack in midair.
* Twinbellows is a giant Duck Hunt that has the ability to breathe fire, which accurately describes Twinbellows' nature as a fire-breathing giant dog (albeit with two heads).

* Phosphora is a summonable spirit that requires the cores of Rotom and Elec Man, two characters with electric powers just like her.
* Magnus is represented by Ike, whose Ragnell sword looks a lot like Magnus' club, and both are exceptionally strong fighters. As the WorldsStrongestMan, Ike also gains super armor and stronger smash attacks, but moves more slowly.
* Pit's original form from the original Kid Icarus can be summoned using the cores of two random Grab Types (which Original Pit is), as well as Centurion and Cupid, who are both angels like Pit (and the former of whom Pit commands).
* The Reaper (a giant Ganondorf) and Reapette (a bunch of smaller Ganondorfs) are all equipped with Death's Scythes, and the larger one can cause damage by ramming into you. In the Kid Icarus games, the Reaper will freak out and ram into Pit if it sees him, summoning a bunch of smaller Reapettes.
* The Specknose is a battle against multiple Warios. Wario's nose is cartoonishly big and pink, just like those of Specknoses, appearing multiple of them as in the original game, they appear in swarms to attack the player.
* The Lurchthorn fight is against six Pac-Men, representing the various sections the enemy is made of, and Super Scopes spawn to represent its ability to shoot beams from its multiple segments. * In its home game, Bronto Burt attacks Kirby by flying into him. In its spirit battle, this is represented by several Pits who do nothing but flying and spamming their side special in the air, simulating a bunch of Brontos attacking you.
* The Dragoon is represented by a red Kirby on Pilotwings with increased move speed and item gravitation, making it easier for him to grab the Dragoon pieces when they spawn. It represents the final battle of 2 using a monochrome Dedede to represent his fight on the black and white Game Boy and uses the Halberd stage to represent most of that battle taking place in the sky. Occasionally, the Nightmare Assist Trophy plunges the battlefield into darkness. Finally, the fight uses the Zero-Two remix from Brawl for the music.

* TAC is a team of Villagers who deal damage by ramming into you, and the Great Cave Offensive stage they're fought in is from their debut game, Kirby Super Star. The battle is also timed, since you have to move quickly to recover your ability if TAC steals it before he disappears.
* Masked Dedede is summoned with a Hammer Bro and the Reporter & Wrestler. The Hammer Bro reference is obvious because of Dedede's giant hammer, but the Reporter/Wrestle team is a double-reference: they both wear masks, and King Dedede's boss arena often resembles a wrestling ring.
* It takes the cores of three other knights, those being Shovel Knight, the Meta-Knights and Knight Man, to summon Galacta Knight. The need for the Meta-Knights in particular is a double reference because in Galacta Knight's boss fight in VideoGame/KirbySuperStarUltra, he summons his own Meta-Knights from time to time.
* To summon Dyna Blade, you need a a Super Star (as a pun on her origin game), Beat (a bird), a Cucco (another bird), and a shield-type core, possibly to represent her status as a MamaBear.

* Landia is a Charizard in a stamina fight, but when you beat him, 4 Tiny Charizard show up, a reference to how Landia can be either 1 big dragon or 4 small dragons.

* Elline is a tiny Palutena on the Rainbow Cruise. Lots of ball weapons spawn here, because Kirby was (once again) trapped in Ball form throughout most of Rainbow Curse.

* Susie's Spirit has her (Isabelle in a pinkish costume) fighting alongside a Metal Meta Knight, who represents Mecha Knight, the mechanized version of Meta Knight that Susie herself created. Possessing Isabelle also makes sense since both characters are secretaries. She can even hack doors due to her technical knowledge. The fight itself takes place on the Halberd, which is likely a reference to .
* The Robobot Armor is a bunch of Kirbies on the Halberd with the only items spawning being drills, referencing The music playing during the stage is also the theme that plays whenever the armor is put on.

* The Three Mage Sisters are a red, blue, and yellow female Robin that have an increase in their magic power and favor specials. And in a similar way to the Paz spirit below, their spirit ability becomes cruel but hilarious as they give you a bonus with battering items, [[spoiler:recalling how Lord Hyness uses them in his boss battle]].

* Cuccos are represented by tiny Falcos on Skyloft. The first Falco starts with 100% damage, and after you knock it out, four more Falcos appear, just like Cuccos will summon a large flock to attack you when provoked. The Cucco item appears in this stage and can be thrown at the Falcos.
* Bokoblins are represented by four dark brown King K. Rools, with the first one carrying an Ore Club (or Boko Club), and the other three as its henchmen.
* Tektite is an Ivysaur that likes to jump a lot. Both are quadrupeds and jumping is how Tektites like to move around.

[[AC:The Legend of Zelda (original)]]
* The original Link is represented by Young Link, referencing how Young Link is technically Link's original portrayal. Moreover, his spirit battle is a representation of Link in an endgame state, as Young Link wears his red tunic in reference to the Red Ring, he has increased damage on his melee weapons referencing the Magical Sword, and he is fought in Find Mii representing Death Mountain.

[[AC:Link's Awakening]]
* Marin is represented by Zelda with a sleep-inducing floor, representing how the world she is in is just a dream. It is also a timed battle to represent how her home will eventually disappear.
* The Wind Fish is represented by a large Jigglypuff wearing a nightcap with a sleep-inducing floor, as Link's Awakening takes place in its dreams.

[[AC:Ocarina of Time]]
* Kaepora Gaebora's fight flips the screen upside-down every few seconds, as a nod to his habit of just spinning his head around mid-dialogue.
* [=ReDeads=] are four black Mewtwos who love to spam their down special (Disable) to stun their opponents. Fittingly, their battle takes place in Hyrule Castle 64.
* Darunia is a yellow Donkey Kong in a lava floor, due to living in a volcano, accompanied by various Jigglypuffs spamming Rollout, referencing the Gorons' ability to roll themselves.
* Saria is a fight with Isabelle and a Young Link ally covered in fog, and charges Final Smashes quickly. The Fog is a reference to the Lost Woods, while the final smashes reference her powers as a sage. Young Link also accompanies her since they are friends, and in World of Light, .
* Impa is a Sheik that eventually gets increased defense in the Great Temple. Being a Sheikah, it would make sense to be Sheik, and she is Zelda's retainer, so the Temple would represent Hyrule Castle, with her defense buffs showing her powers as a sage. Deku nuts also spawn to represent flash bombs. Finally, in World of Light, .
* Malon is a Zelda that likes to drink milk and throws Cuccos at you. Since she is a farmhand, she can use her Cuccos to attack, and the cows' milk is healthy enough to give her a power boost. Her spirit increases the power of shooting weapons, which is most likely a reference to her bow-wielding Termina counterpart, Romani. She is also one of the ingredients for summoning the spirit of her horse, Epona (the other being a Rapidash).
* Koume & Kotake are a pair of Bayonettas, a witch like them, carrying a Freezie and a Fire Flower to reference their elemental powers. They are fought in Gerudo Valley, where they appear as stage hazards. Alternatively, they can be summoned with the cores of Charlotte Aulin, a Fire Flower, and a Freezie. They're also an enhanceable spirit that can become Twinrova.
* A Fairy Bottle is represented by a Young Link and fought in the Fountain of Dreams, as fairies in the Zelda universe are commonly found in fountains and springs. Both fighters also take critical damage as soon as the battle starts, as Fairy Bottles can only be used by characters who are low on health, both in Zelda and in the Smash Bros. games.
* Young Zelda is a slightly shrunken Zelda accompanied by Young Link. The duo is fought on Hyrule Castle, where the two first met in Ocarina of Time. She can then be enhanced into her adult self.

[[AC:Majora's Mask]]
* Skull Kid is a Mii Brawler wearing his costume with 2 Meta Knights being stand-ins for Tatl and Tael, his fairy helpers. The area is also covered in fog as a nod to his illusion magic. Plus, being an Assist Trophy himself, Skull Kid will come in to mess with the player's controls. He is also fought in the Garden of Hope to represent the forest he shows up in. He can also be enhanced to his version that wears the Majora's Mask.
* Fierce Deity Link is, of course, Link in his Fierce Deity outfit. To simulate his sheer power, he gets extra attack power while your fighter gets less defense and becomes easier to launch. Additionally, he's available as a summon that requires the Happy Mask Salesman (the Moon Child who gives you the mask resembles him), Deku Link (Link's first transformation mask), and Ultra Sword Kirby (a powerful sword like his). Also, as a nod to the Dark powers of the mask, .
* The Happy Mask Salesman is represented by a dark Young Link, mirroring the Salesman's surprisingly creepy demeanor if Link angers him by not paying him. The battle takes place on the Umbra Clock Tower (representing the clock tower in Clock Town), and the battle is timed, possibly to reflect his reappearance in Majora's Mask and the strict time limit you find yourself under before TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.

[[AC:Oracle Games]]
* The battles against both main Oracles seem to rather reference the Goddesses they're named after, which is perhaps a nod to the fandom's theory they are avatars of the Goddesses themselves:
** Nayru is 2 blue Zeldas that like to use Nayru's Love and get temporary invincibility, which not only references the character, but also references her spell in Ocarina of Time. In World of Light, she's also found in the Temple of Light sub-area, furthering the connection to the goddess.
** Din is 2 red Zeldas that opt to almost solely use Din's Fire and the fight is on a lava floor, referencing how in Ocarina of Time, the tale of Hyrule's creation mentioned that Din shaped the land with her fiery arms.
* Ricky is a Little Mac who likes to jump a lot, referencing his jumping abilities and use of his fists with boxing gloves to attack. Of course, this has the side effect of Little Mac fighting in the exact manner he's not supposed to be fighting...
* Dimitri is represented by a Yoshi that constantly uses its neutral special, which is how Dimitri normally attacks. He is also assisted by Young Link with the stage being Great Bay to represent the island he is found on during Ages.
* Moosh is a Blue Bowser who uses his Bowser Bomb constantly, which represents the blue bear's main form of attack, a ground pound. His spirit also grants the ability to Instadrop.

[[AC:Four Swords duology]]
* Vaati is a Ridley with an Ore Club with constant wind going on. The Ore Club making its wind gusts and the strong wind reference how Vaati is a Wind Mage, and Ridley is the best person to reference how he is an EldritchAbomination.

[[AC:Twilight Princess]]
* Midna is a green-clad Bayonetta, which fits them both being sarcastic dark-magic wielders with PrehensileHair, fought on the Bridge of Eldin to reference one of the more iconic areas of her game. Midna herself also appears as an Assist Trophy. She's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes her riding Wolf Link, which improves your dash attack.
* Ganondorf is, well, Ganondorf himself. The fight is a stamina battle to represent the no-holds-barred sword duel at the end of Twilight Princess, and he gets increased attack power at half health to represent his "second phase". This version of Ganondorf is enhanceable, and he becomes the version of Dark Beast Ganon from the same game. Beast Ganon confers Impact Run, which references said incarnation's penchant for charging around in his fight.

[[AC:Wind Waker]]
* Beedle in Wind Waker wears only a pair of swim trunks, so he gets to be represented by an armorless Shulk who is assisted by Toon Link, his customer. His condition is that every item that spawns will be pulled towards him (in this case, the Beetle item from Skyward Sword), referencing his name, merchant occupation, and love for beetles.
* Valoo, being a giant dragon, is of course represented by a giant Charizard, and he is also fought on the Volcano of the Wii Sports Resort since he makes his home on top of Dragon Roost Isle's volcano.
* The Fishman is a battle with Squirtle on the pirate ship with reduced buoyancy and reversible controls, a nod to Wind Wakers limited swimming time, and the fact that he charts out the map of the great sea for you respectively.

[[AC:Minish Cap]]
* Ezlo is a Toon Link that shifts sizes, referencing how in that game, he allowed him to change in size.

[[AC:Phantom Hourglass]]
* Linebeck is a Luigi with a Toon Link ally, since he was Link's companion and a coward who eventually proved to be capable of great courage (much like Luigi). The fight is also on a boat with no one knowing how to swim, since in Phantom Hourglass, falling in water is (mildly) lethal.

[[AC:Spirit Tracks]]
* The Phantom is a Zelda who favors her down special, which of course summons a Phantom. It's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes the Zelda of said game, referencing how she aids Link by possessing Phantoms with her ghost.
* Byrne is represented by Shiek, another ninja-like fighter, who also has increased power in her punches and grabs to simulate the mechanical hand he has.

[[AC:Skyward Sword]]
* The battle with The Imprisoned has you fighting a giant King K. Rool, who has super armor, but moves much slower. Meanwhile, the Assist Trophy of Ghirahim defends him, referencing his role in the source game. Of course, it's a stamina battle, so the image of a traditional Zelda boss fight comes to mind here... and the battle's also timed, just like all of the fights against The Imprisoned.
* To summon The Imprisoned's true form, Demise, you need both his core as well as his servant Ghirahim's (to perform the ritual to unseal him).
* Speaking of Skyward Sword, the fight with Loftwing pits you against Falco in Skyloft (the hub world of the aforementioned game) while strong wind periodically blows in. Additionally, he's fought as a giant, since Loftwings are large birds.
* Fi is a battle against Link in Skyworld using the Wild Tunic, likely meaning to be the Link from said game in an advanced state of his adventure.
* Groose is a fight against Wario (another "loser" who is uncomfortable to be around), and the stage is filled with various explosives — a reference to his famous "Groosenator" weapon used to fight the Imprisoned.

[[AC:Link Between Worlds]]
* Yuga is a giant Inkling with increased special power, and you have to beat him twice. Being with Inkling makes sense since he has a fondness for paintings, and him appearing twice is a reference to him turning into "Ganon".
* The Wall-Merged Link spirit battle takes place in the Flat Zone, with Mr. Game and Watch being your first opponent. After defeating him, you have to defeat Young Link immediately afterward. Wall-Merged Link can be enhanced into Link in his standard Link Between Worlds appearance.
* Ravio is a Young Link with a permanent Bunny Hood that also starts the battle with a boomerang, has a fixation for items, and only uses his specials, all of which reference the fact that he sells Link all the equipment that he needs for his journey, with the Bunny Hood referencing his own hood.
* Hilda is a purple Zelda with a blue Young Link as her ally, as a stand-in for Ravio. The battle starts out with a Nightmare Assist Trophy plunging the entire arena in darkness, since Lorule is the DarkWorld counterpart to Hyrule.

[[AC:Triforce Heroes]]
* Madame Couture is a Rosalina with a green, red, and purple Toon Link joining her over time, a reference to how Link constantly goes back to her to get new outfits.
* The Link Tower/Totem Link is a red, purple, and green Toon Link team that favors using smash attacks. Hammers, Bob-Ombs, and Boomerangs spawn during this fight to represent the Hammer, Bomb, and Boomerang items from Triforce Heroes.

[[AC:Breath of the Wild]]
* The fight against Urbosa gives Zero Suit Samus a Killing Edge, meant to reference the Scimitar of the Seven. The stage is the Battlefield form of Gerudo Valley and the main platform is electrified, evoking Vah Naboris, the HumongousMecha under her command.
* Mipha is a purple Inkling girl who constantly regenerates as a nod to her healing magic.
* Revali's battle is similar to the Loftwing's, being a battle with Falco (appropriately, since Revali is an obvious Expy of Falco) with strong wind in Skyloft, referencing both his Revali's Gale technique and his HumongousMecha, Vah Medoh, and Skyloft being the closest thing to Rito Village. Additionally, he tends to spam his Blaster to reference him being an archer.
* Daruk is a yellow Donkey Kong who is wielding an Ore Club, representing his Boulder Breaker. In Adventure, he's found in a volcanic area, referencing his home of Death Mountain.
* And then you get to the fight against Breath of the Wild Zelda, which pits you against all of the Champions at once (including Link) before you can even get to her. Fortunately, their health is rather low to compensate.
* A Guardian is represented as a giant R.O.B. that only uses its neutral special, which is a laser. The battle is also set in the Great Plateau and is a stamina fight to reference how tough they are to beat.
* Calamity Ganon is a giant Ganondorf on the Great Plateau. The player has a Zelda ally, since she is the one keeping him under control, and if Ganon knocks her out, the battle is over, as she isn't keeping him under control anymore. Even in World of Light, . His EasyLevelTrick () may also be an unintentional mythology gag about his mental state in Breath of the Wild.

* Numerous Robot Master spirits are stamina battles against multiple Mega Men who only use the attack specific to that Robot Master (Top Man's Top Spin is the dash attack, Slash Man's Slash Claw is the back aerial, etc.) or wield a weapon that resembles said attack (Dive Man wields the VideoGame/SteelDiver weapon to simulate Dive Missiles), with the color change to match. You also have to fight multiple fighters rather than one as a reference to the fact that they're often fought multiple times in the same game.
** Bomb Man switches things up a bit by using Young Link and his down special (Bomb), since Mega Man doesn't have a Hyper Bomb attack in this game.
** Guts Man is represented by a large Mega Man who favors his grab — which just happens to be Guts Man's weapon, the Super Arm. He's also hard to launch or make flinch, referencing Gut's Man's sturdy build. From time to time, earthquakes happen, referencing how Guts Man makes the earth shake every time he lands after jumping. The stage is Gerudo Valley in Final Destination form, which strongly resembles Guts Man's stage.
** Cut Man is a duel against two orange Young Links who like to toss their Boomerangs around as Cut Man would with his own Rolling Cutter.
** Snake Man is represented by Snake, and they favor using Bombchus to attack, a reference to Snake Man's weapon.
** Galaxy Man is a R.O.B. fought on the Lylat Cruise, a level set in outer space. The stage has low gravity, and the only item that spawns is the Black Hole, representing Galaxy Man's Black Hole Bomb.
** Elec Man is a masked Pikachu that prefers to use its electric abilities on a stage with an electrified floor as a stage hazard, which is rather self-explanatory.
** The battle against Crash Man takes place on the Wrecking Crew stage, where there are plenty of destructible blocks to blow up with the Crash Bomber.
** Shadow Man is a set of Greninja who prefers to spam Greninja's Water Shuriken move, referencing Shadow Man's own WeaponOfChoice.
** Wood Man is two Mega Men who jump around and spam Leaf Shield, though the original would jump three times before shielding.
** Wind Man is a Mega Man with a Rocket Belt, and has gusts of wind going on throughout the battle.
** Knight Man is represented by a Metal Simon who favors Smash attacks, with his whip acting as Knight Man's Knight Crusher attack. The stage is the interior section of Castle Siege to represent the Citadel of Science, Knight Man's stage.
** Quick Man is a fast-moving and high-jumping Mega Man who frequently attacks you with boomerangs similar to the Quick Boomerang.
** Gravity Man is a battle on the planet-like Mario Galaxy against Dark Samus, whose floaty movements are eerily perfect for the constantly shifting gravity that occurs throughout the battle. As a Dojo Master, he teaches the Gravity Style which makes spirits jump higher and fall slower.
** Skull Man is a silver Samus with a permanent Reflect effect to signify Skull Man's Skull Barrier. Reflected projectiles also cause more damage in this battle.
** Napalm Man is Snake who uses his neutral special to represent the Napalm Bomb. While the name of the weapon has nothing to do with napalm at all, the puppet Snake wearing the Heat Camo is likely a reference to it.

[[AC:Other Classic Series Characters]]
* Dr. Wily is represented by Dr. Mario, but you have to defeat eight metal Mega Men before he spawns, i.e. you have to defeat the eight Robot Masters to get to him.
* Dr. Light is also represented by Dr. Mario, who is fought in a stamina battle where he tends to run away while a Mega Man ally fights, which represents how he's the BigGood NonActionGuy of the series.
* Mettaur is a Pac-Man that shields a lot and doesn't jump, even having a back-shield, which is how a Met normally fights. The battle is fought on the Wrecking Crew stage, an industrial area Mettaurs are normally found in.
* Bass is represented by another Mega Man, albeit one armed with a Super Scope referencing his rapid-fire capabilities, and is accompanied by a metal Duck Hunt duo referencing his wolf companion Treble and Wily's pet bird Reggae.
* Proto Man is summoned with the cores of Dr. Light (his creator), Roll (his sister), and a random Shield-type core (to represent his signature Proto Shield).
* Roll is represented by a female Villager accompanied by her brother in the Living Room stage. Both the Villager and the living room represent her status as a housekeeper robot, being a stage set in a peaceful house and a character known for just living a daily life.
* Duo is represented by two giant Captain Falcons with Super Armor who favor their neutral specials (Falcon Punch). As a playable character in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Duo mainly attacked with punches and charged Rocket Punches instead of using ranged weapons like the other characters. When you equip Duo, he improves your fist attacks.

[[AC:X]]
* X himself is represented by his predecessor and is fought in a stamina match on New Donk City to represent the Central Highway from X1. His color scheme is a brighter shade of blue to represent the First Armor, he flinches less to reference the weaker knockback compared to the classic series, and he occasionally uses items that represent other X series weapons, like the Fire Flower as a stand-in for the Fire Wave.
* Sigma is represented through a stamina battle on Midgar with a purple-caped Ganondorf equipped with a beam sword. Both Sigma and Ganondorf are LargeAndInCharge villain-types with broad shoulders and capes, while the beam sword represents Sigma's own beam saber from X1, and Midgar's Shinra building is a stand-in for Sigma Palace. Also, Sigma is the spirit that guards Mega Man in World of Light.
* Axl is represented by two gray Mega Men fought in a stamina battle. Both fighters have increased power to their shooting attacks and come equipped with a Ray Gun, referencing Axl's preference for rapid-fire laser guns.

[[AC:Legends]]
* Mega Man Volnutt is the Blue Bomber fought on The Great Cave Offensive, which fits with how Volnutt's job is a Digger exploring ancient ruins for treasure.
* Tron Bonne is represented as Wendy Koopa (as the Koopa Clown Car is meant to evoke the Gustaff, Tron's signature mech) and is accompanied by 2 miniature yellow R.O.B.s as Servbots. You fight her on Wuhu Island, as a stand-in for Kattelox Island, the setting of the first Mega Man Legends game.
* Roll Caskett is represented by Isabelle, with Diddy Kong, who represents Data, joining her. The stage is Pilotwings, representing the Flutter flying between islands. Hocotate Bombs also frequently spawn throughout the match, referencing .

[[AC:Battle Network]]
* [=MegaMan=].EXE is obviously represented as the Blue Bomber himself, but the stage you fight him is Hanenbow, which is the closest representation to the Internet, and you fight multiple Mega Men. One of them spawns in with a Bob-omb, which references the Bomb battle chips. He can even hack computers, as it was his M.O. within his games.
* [=ProtoMan=].EXE is represented by Shulk, whose Monado is similar in appearance to [=ProtoMan=]'s beam sword. Due to the typing, you're encouraged to use the [=MegaMan=].EXE spirit since the latter overpowers the former.

[[AC:ZX and ZX Advent]]
* Model X is obviously represented as the Blue Bomber himself, but the stage you fight them is Moray Towers, which fits the urban residential district of Area C/Inner Peace of ZX, and you fight multiple Mega Men, which also fits with how "Mega Man" is a title in this time period rather than a person. Model X is also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes Model ZX, referencing how Vent/Aile receive Model Z from Giro, and gains the ability to extend the time of transformation items, which references the signature ability of Biometals.

[[AC:Star Force]]
* Geo Stelar and Omega-Xis are represented by Richter (Geo) and Wolf (Omega-Xis) on Moray Towers (a stand-in for Echo Ridge, Geo's hometown) where the bottom half of the level is electrified. They're also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes the titular Mega Man of the series.

* Hal Emmerich/Otacon is represented as Dr. Mario and is joined by a Giant Metal R.O.B. who represents Metal Gear REX, the titular mech designed by Otacon himself. Being a techie, it also makes sense that he can be a requirement to open the computer-locked gate housing the MGS-like dungeon. If you combine his spirit with the Tanks and Infantry from VideoGame/NintendoWars, you'll get the Metal Gear REX spirit.
* Dr. Strangelove is represented by Bayonetta, a fellow short-haired woman with a British accent. Much like Otacon, she is also assisted by a R.O.B., referencing her role as an authority figure in the Peace Walker project. As a Support Spirit, she provides the player with a Rage Blaster, which is likely a reference to her resentment towards Big Boss for the murder of The Boss.
* The Boss is represented by a gray Zero Suit Samus, with the fight being a stamina match on the Garden of Hope with a poison floor representing the field of flowers from Snake Eater and adding to the difficulty. In addition, you need to cross a bridge to get to her, and her positioning means she's one of the first Legend Spirits you may find. IE: you're likely to get your butt handed to you just like Naked Snake did the first time if you're unprepared. Fittingly enough, the new remix of "Snake Eater" plays in the background as a nod to it also playing in her boss fight, and the fight is timed — just like how she had to be defeated before the airstrike she called in caused a NonStandardGameOver. She also has high HP and defense, referencing how hard to kill she is (she can shrug off bullets in her home game) and her grappling trait is a stand-in for CQC.
* Paz Ortega Andrade's Support Spirit effect equips you with a Bob-Omb at the start of a match, a dark joke about the . As if that wasn't enough, her fight is against a giant female Villager who can pocket bombs, made more poignant in that Bob-Ombs periodically rain on the battle. You also have to fight a giant R.O.B. imbued with the spirit of Metal Gear ZEKE, referencing . The fight is also on Gaur Plains to represent Costa Rica.
* Metal Gear ZEKE is represented by R.O.B. on Halberd, which is likely a stand-in for Mother Base. It can be enhanced into Sahelanthropus, which is likely a reference to Huey Emmerich's development on both.
* Revolver Ocelot is represented by Fox, both being small predatory animals whose characters have a preference for using guns. In addition, the only items that drop in the stage are guns and he has a zap floor, undoubtedly a callback to his infamous electric torture scenes.
* Naked Snake is a fight against Snake in his camouflage costume on the Distant Planet stage in the rain, reminiscent of the jungle of Metal Gear Solid 3. After taking a lot of damage, several more identical Snakes spawn, but you're only required to KO the original, , in addition to his three sons. Also, when enhanced to Big Boss, the spirit gains the Metal Killer trait, a reference to the number of Metal Gears destroyed by the protagonists in the games. The new "Snake Eater" remix plays as a nod towards the game where he was made playable for the first time.
* To summon Gray Fox's Spirit, you need the cores of Mighty Gazelle (a cyborg) and Shadow Man (a ninja). "Cyborg Ninja" is what Gray Fox was referred to in Metal Gear Solid when Snake first encountered him, before his true identity was revealed. When fought as a Spirit, he takes on the form of a gold-colored Sheik, who has a similar fighting style.
* Metal Gear RAY is represented by a Metal Greninja, referencing RAY's amphibious design and high-pressure water cutter.
* The Gekko from VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4 is represented by a giant-sized Dark Samus, who is barely capable of jumping. Ironically, the spirit itself increases your jumping ability. The fact that it's Dark Samus as the puppet fighter is likely a reference to the fact that she and the GEKKO are both a mish-mash of organics and technology; Dark Samus was the Metroid Prime who absorbed Samus' technological Phazon Suit in order to survive (which is referenced by her Phazon Suit palette), while the GEKKO are robots with organic cloned cow legs.
* Metal Gear RAY is a Grab-type, whereas Metal Gear REX is a Shield-type, giving RAY type advantage, since RAY was designed to beat REX. However, REX's power and rank is much higher, because when the two models actually fought in VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4, REX beat RAY.
* Raiden's Spirit needs the cores of Rosemary (his girlfriend and later wife) and Solidus Snake (his ex-mentor and foster father turned rival). A large part of him being a Legend-type is because of how - by VideoGame/MetalGearRisingRevengeance - he is blatantly portrayed as the strongest character in the entire series due to becoming a CyborgNinja.
* Meryl Silverburg's fight pitches you against a black Zero Suit Samus on Shadow Moses Island. During the fight, everyone takes sudden damage periodically. This is likely a reference to .
* The fight with EVA takes place on the Garden of Hope with Zero Suit Samus paired with Snake to represent Naked Snake. During the battle, their stats increase when eating food, a reference to the food mechanic in VideoGame/MetalGearSolid3SnakeEater and the fact that EVA steals Snake's food at one point, albeit that she was only interested in the instant noodles he may have been carrying and mainly stole the food for Revolver Ocelot as he wanted to eat the same thing Snake eats. As a support spirit, she grants the player a Ray Gun as a reference to her penchant for pistols.
* Roy Campbell is represented by Snake on Shadow Moses. Due to his status as MissionControl, he's likely giving the puppet Snake directions and help during the battle, evidenced by his attack stat rising periodically. As a support spirit, your controls are proofed against any in-game meddling, as if he was giving you help and advice to continue the mission.
* Liquid Snake is represented by... well, Snake on Shadow Moses Island. There's a poison cloud during the battle, which is likely the closest you'll get in Smash to .
* Mei Ling is represented by a female Wii Fit Trainer on Midgar. The stage is likely a stand-in for Outer Haven; Liquid Ocelot's high-tech ship, which Mei Ling had to fight against with the obsolete S.S. Missouri (and won) due to Liquid taking over the SOP system, which prevented Rat Patrol 01 from having anything better-suited to fight with. The fog during the battle is likely a reference to the crew having to look for Outer Haven by themselves due to lack of technology. The Wii Fit Trainer's constant spouting of healthy lifestyle tips may also be the closest you get to Chinese proverbs aside from the codec calls.
* Solidus Snake is represented by a black Snake due to being the secret third clone of the "Les Enfants Terribles" project. He also carries a Killing Edge, since Solidus also wielded a katana.
* Major Zero is represented by Captain Falcon on Shadow Moses Island paired with Snake to represent Naked Snake. At some point in the battle, your speed is reduced, which is likely a reference to
* Rosemary is represented by Zero Suit Samus in the Living Room, referencing her role as a NonActionGuy in VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4GunsOfThePatriots as a psychiatrist. During the battle, everyone gets a reduction in defense, referencing the Psyche mechanic where Old Snake would become more vulnerable the lower it is.

* The X Parasite is represented by Kirby, another blob-like being that consumes other creatures and copies their abilities. It's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes the Nightmare (one of the many creatures it assimilated) and gains the ability Lifesteal, which again denotes its status as TheAssimilator.
* Trace is represented by a red Samus, a fellow bounty hunter, who has the ability to turn invisible, which represents his ability to turn invisible when he fires his weapon while standing still.
* The Gravity Suit is Samus in her gravity suit colors, and your fighter has high gravity on them while Samus doesn't, which references the suit's primary function. Its function when you equip it is lava floor resistance, referencing its secondary function of allowing Samus to traverse extremely hot areas (including being submerged in lava) without being roasted to death.
* Adam Malkovich is represented by a blue Snake, referencing his status as the "perfect military mind" in-universe. He's also accompanied by Zero Suit Samus as a nod to her time working under him, and the stage is Shadow Moses Island, which looks somewhat similar to the insides of the BOTTLE SHIP.
** Young Samus is much the same, except replace Shadow Moses Island with the Frigate Orpheon.
* Gandrayda is a Dark Samus with a Pikachu ally in the Frigate Orpheon. Pikachu is there because of her powers over electricity, while Dark Samus is there because she got corrupted by Dark Samus's Phazon, and the stage is a nod to the Pirate Homeworld, which is where she is fought.
* Omega Ridley is, of course, Ridley with both his Meta-Ridley PaletteSwap and being permanently metal to reference his cyborg nature.
* Mecha Ridley is also Ridley in his Meta-Ridley skin, but has reduced movement speed since it doesn't move around much, and he is also giant since the robot barely fits in the room you find it in.
* Kraid is a stamina fight against a Giant K. Rool with decreased speed and jump power in Brinstar Depths, which itself is Kraid's Lair (though Kraid himself doesn't appear since the stage is in Omega mode). Both are evil reptiles, and he doesn't really move around much because he rarely moves in his boss fight. He even teaches other spirits to be like him in terms of stats.
* The Fusion Suit is summoned through the cores of a Chozo Statue and a Metroid, since it is the combo of Chozo tech and Metroid DNA.
* The Diggernaut's spirit battle is against a giant R.O.B. that starts the battle with a drill, since it is a giant robot that drills tunnels.

* The Bonus Fruit are represented by two Pac-Men who only use their Neutral Specials. They both have to be defeated within 20 seconds, similar to how bonus fruit from Pac-Man's home game has a very short window for you to catch it before it disappears.
* Turn-to-Blue, the phase the Ghosts adopt when Pac-Man eats a Power Pellet, is a fight against four blue Mr. Game & Watches on the Wrecking Crew stage, and they try their best to avoid you the whole match (which is timed, to act as if the Power Pellet's effects are wearing off).
* The Ghosts in their normal form is a team battle against a red Kirby (Blinky), Jigglypuff (Pinky), Squirtle (Inky), and Pac-Man (Clyde) on Pac Land. The Ghosts themselves appear as Assist Trophies.
* Boss Galaga is represented by a team of Pac-Mans who prefer using their grab, as it's the tractor beam used from the game. It's also on Lylat Cruise to represent the space setting and the Boss Galaga items show up in large quantities with the Galaga Medley playing, obviously.

* Morgana puts you against a tiny Pikachu Libre, a similarly RidiculouslyCuteCritter with a mask, and the two also share a voice actor in Japanese. And like everyone else, he's accompanied by a Persona, in this case a black Incineroar representing Zorro. Throughout the fight, there are several references to Morgana's affinity for Garu spells, such as dangerously high winds on occasion, as well as Incineroar carrying an Ore Club, which creates tornados with heavy swings. Pikachu Libre herself carries a Killing Edge, since Morgana's WeaponOfChoice is a scimitar. As such, his Spirit boosts Sword attacks too.
* Ryuji Sakamoto is represented by the similarly boisterous and loud Captain Falcon, who wields a Home Run Bat to reflect his large swinging weapons, and his Spirit boosts your Battering Items power. His Persona, Captain Kidd, is portrayed by a Mii Gunner dressed as a pirate. The battle takes place on top of Luigi's Mansion as a stand-in for Kamoshida's Palace.
* Ann Takamaki is portrayed by fellow blonde, skin-tight suit wearing, whip-wielding MsFanservice Zero Suit Samus in a red costume. Her Persona, Carmen, is represented by a red Peach who has a Fire Flower to simulate her Agi spells, and the Spirit itself boosts your Fire attacks. The battle takes place in the castle portion of the Castle Siege stage, as another stand-in for Kamoshida's Palace.
* Yusuke Kitagawa has you square off against Chrom, whom he shares voice actors with in both English and Japanese. The two are also both blue haired swordsmen. Meanwhile, Dedede is a stand in for his Persona, Goemon. Vince, a fellow artist, also appears as a hostile Assist Trophy. He is fought on the Battlefield version of Suzaku Castle, which resembles Madarame's Palace, where Yusuke was originally recruited.
* Makoto Niijima pits you against an all black Sheik, who has a similar costume to her own; another possiblity is the similarity between Sheik - who is Zelda disguised as a man - and Makoto's Persona Johanna, who is based on Pope Joan, who according to legend was a woman who disguised herself as a male priest. Assisting her is an invisible Wario who won't stop using his Wario Bike, standing in for her CoolBike Persona, Johanna. The battle takes place on the Omega form of Dracula's Castle to stand in for another floating fortress, Kaneshiro's Palace - the dungeon where she joins the party. Since Makoto uses gauntlets as her WeaponOfChoice, she boosts your Fist attacks.
* Futaba Sakura is represented by the orange haired Inkling girl. The comparisons between both characters' orange Bobcut hairstyles has been a meme ever since Persona 5 first came out. You fight her on the Battlefield form of Mushroomy Kingdom, which resembles the desert surrounding her Palace. You will also have to contend with the Wily Capsule Assist Trophy, representing her UFO-styled Persona, Necronomicon, and Boss Galagas will frequently appear, referencing her love for video games. Her battle theme being the remix of Beneath the Mask, which was originally the town overworld theme, rather than the battle theme Last Surprise, could be in reference to her status as a non-combatantThis is also given a nod in that fact that Futaba's Persona is an assist trophy, rather than a full fledged fighter.; that actually plays into her battle, as the Inkling will never actively try to attack and instead run for the Galagas instead while the player has to defeat her in a set period of time. Her Spirit gives you Critical Health Attack, alluding to her ability to provide stat buffs to the party if they're in a pinch.
* Haru Okumura is represented by the pink female Villager, which matches her color scheme and peaceful personality, and also wields an axe for one attack, referencing Haru's choice of weapon. Her Persona Milady takes a page out of Ann's battle by having a Daisy with a Super Scope as her stand-in. Vegetables are a theme through the match as seen with Villager and Daisy's attacks and the random waves of food that spawn on stage - the Tomadachi Life rooftop, referencing Haru's role as caretaker of the school garden and her Confidant's ability to provide the party with SP-restoring vegetables.
* Goro Akechi is represented by a white Marth wielding a beam sword in reference to Akechi's primary weapon. A giant Pit acts as a stand in for his Persona, Robin Hood. The battle takes place in Fourside, representing the Casino Palace where he joins the Phantom Thieves. His battle theme is Rivers in the Desert, which plays The reversed controls may also be a reference to how he has the ability to His Spirit gives you Item Gravitation, which synergies well with the collective Phantom Thieves Spirit's ability, since he automatically comes with early Confidant combat boosts when he joins, making him an invaluable team player in the Casino Palace.
* Caroline and Justine are portrayed by the two Ice Climbers. You take Sudden Damage frequently and the battle is timed, reflecting their BonusBoss fight, in which they'll constantly throw high level spells at you while you're on a Turn limit to clear their various phases. Taking too long causes you to suddenly be on max damage, reflecting how the two can end the battle instantly if you take too long on each phrase. The battle takes place in Kalos Pokemon league, invoking both the Velvet Room's iconic blue color as well as the round shape it had in Persona 5.
* The mysterious and mystical Igor is represented by the mage Robin. Assist Trophy items will constantly spawn for you to use, as stand-ins for Personas, since Igor is the one to explain what Personas are and introduces you to Persona Fusion in the original Persona games. The book Robin carries could also allude to the Persona Compendium that houses the Personas Joker creates. As a nod to the theme of "rehabilitation" invoked by Igor in Persona 5, you start with 300% damage and have to face several Ridleys before you can face Robin himself, but you're healed back to full as the fight progresses. And just like the twins, this fight is also set in the Kalos Pokemon League.
* The collective Phantom Thieves battle pits the player in a rematch against all of the Thieves' Spirits, with the exceptions of the pink Villager (representing Haru)Though the version of Mementos this fight takes place on will always have Haru in the background cheering on the fighters. and white Marth (representing Akechi), culminating in a one-on-one encounter with Joker, who randomly gains a full Final Smash meter that gives him the ability to call upon his teammates for an All-Out Attack. The battle takes place on Mementos with "Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There" playing as a reference to the intro to Persona 5. Daybreak pieces also spawn, alluding to the "Daybreak" OVA made to promote Persona 5. The Spirit itself lets the user be a true thief by allowing them to swipe nearby items automatically with no need for input.

* Smoky Progg is represented by Mario, who occasionally turns metal mid-fight. This is a reference to the Smoky Progg's near-invulnerability to attacks until he roars.
* Both Brittany and Charlie's spirits are represented by Alph, and get stronger after eating healing food.
* The Red Pikmin are represented by 12 tiny Incineroar with increased fire attack power, who fight on the Garden of Hope where the floor is lava. It's also a stamina match where each Incineroar only has 10 HP, because Pikmin are easily killed.
* Bulborb is a stamina battle against a giant red Yoshi who only uses his neutral special (Egg Lay, which devours the opponent and turns them into an egg). The battle takes place on the Distant Planet, where the real Red Bulborb shows up and tries to devour you.
* The Yellow Pikmin are a group of tiny Pichu in an electrified field, representing their electric properties. They also have 10 HP each.
* The Blue Pikmin are a bunch of tiny Squirtle that get a boost to their water attacks, representing their affinity for water. The stage is also the Garden of Hope with the rain always on as to further reference this affinity. They have 10 HP each.
* The Purple Pikmin are represented by several tiny Donkey Kongs who deal damage when falling, in reference to their increased weight versus other Pikmin types. They each have 20 HP, since they are slightly sturdier than other Pikmin.
* The Rock Pikmin are a bunch of tiny Kirbys that use their stone special, with your fighter having high gravity on them, referencing how they primarily attack by bumping into their enemies a lot. Like the Purple Pikmin, they each have 20 HP.
* The Flying Pikmin are a team of Jigglypuff that float around and use air attacks. They have 10 HP each.
* The Iridescent Glint Beetle is a golden Squirtle (since both have shells) that tends to avoid conflict, much like how it runs around and eventually runs away. It's also timed since the beetle only shows up for a limited amount of time.

[[AC:Generation I]]
* Eevee is represented as 3 Yoshis in red/blue/yellow colors, all with Super Leaves equipped, with yellow starting with a Screw Attack and red starting with a Superspicy Curry. These Yoshis represent Eevee's first 3 evolutions (Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon). Blue Yoshi also starts with a Poké Ball that is guaranteed to send out Eevee itself when the fight starts.
* Gengar is represented as a purple Donkey Kong battled on the Battlefield variant of Luigi's Mansion with a sleeping effect applied to the floor representing Gengar's Hypnosis attack.
* Psyduck is represented by Squirtle, also a non-evolved water type, but can occasionally flip the stage upside down to reference its psychic powers. It's also fought in Saffron City, another Pokémon stage.
* Porygon is represented as a wireframe Little Mac accompanied by VideoGame/VirtuaFighter[='=]s Akira to represent its primitive computer graphics body.
* Slowpoke is represented by a pink Luigi, but with reduced movement speed to show how slow this 'mon really is. It also reverses your controls after a while to indicate its psychic powers. As a Dojo Master, its prime purpose is to use Amnesia on a spirit to make it forget any styles it's learned.
* Venusaur is represented by a giant green Ivysaur, and the battle is set in the Garden of Hope with poisoned floors, a reference to Ivysaur and Venusaur's dual Grass/Poison-typing.
* Chansey is represented by Jigglypuff wearing a Pokémon Nurse hat on a stamina match that is occasionally healed, referencing Chansey's role as a nurse.
* Kangaskhan is a brown Bowser who is assisted by an Iggy to represent its child that is always seen carrying. This is possibly referencing how infamous Mega Kangaskhan was as a GameBreaker.
* Weezing is represented by the similarly gassy Wario in a Pokémon Stadium filled with poison gas, one of Weezing's basic attacks. Oddly, it boosts your fire and explosion attacks when you equip it, but Weezing is known to be able to use Explosion and can learn Fire-type attacks.
* Lapras is represented by the Ice Climbers in a battle on the rocky part of Wuhu Island, since Lapras is a Water/Ice-type. You also lose the ability to swim, as you need Lapras' help to sail over bodies of water without drowning. Lapras is also needed to cross the ocean in World of Light.
* Geodude is represented by four gray Kirbys who frequently use their down special (Stone), and are fought on a permanently Ground-typed Pokémon Stadium, since Geodude is a Rock/Ground type.
* Hitmonlee is a pair of yellow Captain Falcons who almost exclusively use kicking attacks, including the Falcon Kick.
* Ditto is a dark blue Kirby that favors his neutral special attack to absorb and copy his opponent's ability. He also starts the battle with a Poké Ball that spawns Ditto itself to create a second Kirby.
* Mew is in a tiny Mewtwo, its clone, in a fog-covered Kongo Jungle in a timed battle, periodically becoming invisible. Mew is shown to reside deep in jungles in several different canons, most famously the first Pokémon movie. Its power of invisibility is frequently mentioned in Pokédex entries.
* Abra is also a tiny Mewtwo, and all Poké Balls spawned contain (what else?) Abra. It's also a timed match, as Abra is infamous for fleeing battle at the first opportunity.
* Meowth is a pair of golden Isabelles on Golden Plains, referencing the species' adoration for coins and anything else shiny.
* Machamp is represented by two giant Captain Falcons who spam their jab attacks to represent its four arms and RapidFireFisticuffs, and the location is the Wrecking Crew stage, since Machamp are typically employed in heavy-duty environments such as construction work.

[[AC:Generation II]]
* Ampharos is represented by Pichu, another Electric-type from VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver. Speaking of electricity, the floor is covered in it!
* Miltank is represented by a Jigglypuff that spams Rollout as an AscendedMeme to Whitney's Miltank from Pokémon Gold and Silver.
* Wobbuffet is 2 K. Rools (representing its separate male and female forms) that have Franklin Badges equipped, and favor their counter move. They act a lot like how an actual Wobbuffet fights, which is to counter anything that hits them.
* Marill is a blue Kirby that resists water and ice attacks, much like the Water type. The sprit's ability lets you attack by dashing, resembling its appearance as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Melee.
* Wooper, as a small water Pokémon, is possessing a tiny Squirtle, with periodic earthquakes due to it also being Ground type.
* Smeargle is a male Inkling who favors his side Smash (Inkbrush). Playing with the Pokémon's art aesthetic even further, its stage is [=WarioWare=] Inc. with its crudely-drawn background, and Vince from VideoGame/ArtAcademy appears as an enemy Assist Trophy to paint over your character and obscure your vision.
* Ho-Oh is represented by a giant Charizard, that other flying fiery Pokémon, with a permanent Superspicy Curry effect, replicating its usual Sacred Fire attack when summoned from a Poké Ball in Smash games. The fact that this makes it a huge pain to capture could also be viewed as reflecting its origin. The stage is the Blazing Chamber of the Kalos Pokémon League, which features Ho-Oh as a stage hazard — while this can take Charizard out for you, it has increased resistance to fire attacks, so don't count on it. Additionally, in order to summon Ho-Oh, one spirit that you need is that of Raikou, Entei, & Suicune, referencing that Ho-Oh is their trio master. Also, you need Ho-Oh's status as the "Rainbow Pokemon" to make a rainbow bridge.
* Skarmory is a metal Falco, since both are birds, and the metal status is to allude to its Steel typing.
* Bellossom is a Jigglypuff that has a flower, with Bellossom itself only appearing through Poké Balls, and Jigglypuff going after Lip's Sticks, all of these fit the theme of Bellossom's flowers.
* Raikou, Entei, and Suicune are a Pikachu, Charizard, and Greninja (matching each Pokémon’s type) on a lava-floor version of Suzaku Castle to simulate the Burned Tower and the trio's tragic history with the location.
* Sudowoodo is a Ridley who is weak to water attacks, as it's a Rock-type and you have to spray it with water in order to catch it. It is accompanied by two red Ridleys, but you only need to defeat the real one (the green one) to win, probably in reference to the creature's habit of disguising itself. All three Ridleys only use fully-charged smash attacks, granting them super armor as they are in their charging pose. This references how they disguise themselves as trees by posing as one and remaining motionless.
* Unown is a battle on Temple against a swarm of tiny Mr. Game & Watches. Both are monochrome beings with bizarre powers, and Unown's true power can only be unleashed as a cooperative group. Just as Unown are found exclusively in ruins covered in odd writing, the stage features Hylian writing on its platforms.
* Tyranitar is fellow reptile King K. Rool and is fought on Mushroomy Kingdom, which combined reference its Rock/Dark typing. You take occasional sudden damage during the battle as if you were affected by its Sand Stream ability.
* Lugia is a giant Falco (Another bird), on Pirate Ship, seeing as it’s the guardian of the sea. Lugia itself will be summoned via a Poké Ball, and there’s also heavy wind in effect. Several of Lugia’s Pokédex entries make note of the fact that it can create 40-day-and-night-long storms just by lightly fluttering its wings.

[[AC:Generation III]]
* Shedinja is represented as a green Mr. Game & Watch with 1 HP, with its invulnerability to most attacks in the game shown as a permanent Franklin Badge and an invincibility effect constantly renewing itself (leaving you maybe one second to get a good hit in before it's back up).
* Groudon is a giant red Bowser on Battlefield form Norfair with lava floors, which all reference Groudon's massive size and preference for resting in magma without issue. It's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes Primal Groudon, which gives it fire/explosive resistance.
* Kyogre is a giant Squirtle fought on Great Bay, an oceanic setting like Kyogre's native Hoenn region, with Kyogre being a guaranteed spawn from Squirtle's Poké Ball. Like Groudon, Kyogre's spirit can become Primal Kyogre when enhanced, and it gives you water/freezing resistance.
* Gardevoir is a green Rosalina, another elegant lady, who starts with a Franklin Badge and also uses various projectile items. Gardevoir also shows up via Poké Ball.
* Latias & Latios are a blue and red Charizard fought in Delfino Plaza, a nod to the canal city of Alto Mare, the city featured in the 5th Pokémon movie Anime/PokemonHeroes: Latias & Latios. Guess who their Poké Ball spawns.
* Salamence is a blue Charizard, and its fight has strong winds blowing which reference its Flying Type. The music that plays during the fight is Zinnia's theme, referencing Zinnia owning a Salamence as her primary Pokémon in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.
* Flygon is a green Ridley that fights in Gerudo Valley while earthquakes occur, referencing its Ground/Dragon typing and habitat.
* Rayquaza is a fellow large dragon in the form of the green Ridley. The stage is the Kalos Pokémon League, where Rayquaza itself appears as a stage hazard.
* Milotic is a Mewtwo that shields often and has buffed defense (referencing its Marvel Scale Ability), fought in the Kalos Pokémon League's Flood Chamber.
* Blaziken, a kickboxing chicken, is Captain Falcon with buffs to kicks and knee moves. It's also extremely fast, as if this particular Blaziken had Speed Boost.
* Deoxys is represented by a Legend-class orange Mewtwo, another legendary Psychic-type. It also summons a real Deoxys from a Poké Ball, and has boosted attack power in reference to its nigh-peerless Attack and Special Attack stats. Lastly, the battle takes place in Mario Galaxy, an allusion to Deoxys' extraterrestrial origins.
* Metagross is represented by a blue R.O.B. to reference Metagross' AmbiguousRobot characteristic. Periodic earthquakes appear to represent the move Earthquake as well as Steven's Theme playing as a Metagross is his WeaponOfChoice.

[[AC:Generation IV]]
* Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf have a trio of Mewtwo (a fellow Psychic-type) in yellow, red, and blue for their battle. The battle is set on Spear Pillar, which is in their native Sinnoh region (and where you might see the real lake trio).
* Arceus is Corrin, whose dragon form resembles Arceus. Pokeballs will also only spawn Arceus, and strong wind will trigger on occasion, attempting to blow you off the stage where Arceus' attack can spike you into the abyss. And the fight is at Spear Pillar, which is right below Arceus' domain, the Hall of Origin. The actual spirit itself has both its stats being 2006 at Level 1; VideoGame/PokemonDiamondAndPearl came out in 2006. Arceus' stats being equal across the board is also referencing that Arceus has equal stats in Pokémon, with each of its stats being 120.
* Giratina is a giant Mr. Game and Watch, representing its extradimensional nature. Giratina's spirit is also fought at Spear Pillar, in this case because of its appearance there in Platinum. Poké Balls will only spawn Giratina.
* Dialga is a giant Lucario, a fellow Steel-type Pokémon, and is fought on Spear Pillar (again) with Dialga being summoned to the battlefield as a stage hazard.
* Palkia is a giant Mewtwo, who has powers of teleportation that evoke Palkia's spacial manipulation, and is fought on, you guessed it, Spear Pillar, with Palkia summoned onto the battlefield as a stage hazard.
* Cresselia is a giant Pink Yoshi, having a vaguely similar body shape, and is fought on Spear Pillar (yet again) with Cresselia as a stage hazard. Yoshi will also gain increased defences over time, referencing Cresselia's status as a StoneWall.
* Abomasnow is a white DK that is weak to fire, one of the mon's biggest weaknesses. The floor is also covered in Ice to reference its Ice-typing, and Abomasnow itself comes out of the Poké Ball DK has. The stage is the Summit, referencing the snowy areas where Abomasnow is found (like the higher elevations of Mount Coronetnot its summit, though; that would be Spear Pillar).
* Rotom is represented by a pair of Pichus who fight you on the [=PictoChat=] stage, as if they've possessed a UsefulNotes/NintendoDS.
* Garchomp is represented by a blue Charizard on Spear Pillar. In reference to its pseudo-legendary status, it has increased speed and power.
* Regigigas, an enormous golem, is represented by a giant R.O.B. Its speed and attack power increase after a while to replicate the effects of its Slow Start ability.
* Shaymin is fellow Grass-type Ivysaur and is fought on Yoshi's Island, a flowery island similar to the Flower Paradise. To complete the motif, you have a flower on your head for the entire fight.

[[AC:Generation V]]
* Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion have a green Lucario, a blue Yoshi, and a brown Duck Hunt Duo (representing Virizion, Cobalion, and Terrakion, respectively), all with Beam Swords, since their signature attack is Sacred Sword.
* Genesect is a bunch of R.O.B.s that spam their laser special, imitating Genesect's signature attack. It also shows up from any Poké Balls as well to use its laser attack. The R.O.B.s being in a group of four may reference the Genesect Army, which consists of four normal-colored Genesect following a shiny leader.
* Reshiram's spirit is a giant grey Charizard, fought on Unova Pokémon League. They both are Fire-type draconic Pokémon, matching types exactly if Charizard were to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X, and grey is as close as Reshiram's all-white colouration as Charizard can get in Smash.
* Zekrom is a giant black-and-yellow Dark Samus, fought on Unova Pokémon League. They both are black-coloured entities with electric abilities (or at least according to the in-game elements), with a brighter counterpart (Samus/Reshiram) and born from a separate entity, albeit in opposite ways (a single dragon splitting into Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem/Metroid Prime absorbing Samus' Phazon suit).
* White Kyurem and Black Kyurem spirits can only be made by combining a Kyurem core with a core of Reshiram or Zekrom, respectively. Just like how White Kyurem and Black Kyurem are a fusion of Kyurem and the appropriate dragon.
* Tornadus (Incarnate Forme) is a green Lucario fought on Skyworld with high winds constantly in effect, and Lucario starting the battle with the whirlwind-generating Ore Club.
* Meloetta (Aria Forme) is a team of Jigglypuff on a sleep-inducing floor with Meloetta herself appearing via Poké Ball, really hammering in the fact that it is a singing Pokémon.
* Zoroark's battle starts off against Wolf — another dark Fox in a sense — with a Poké Ball containing Zoroark. However, after Wolf is knocked out, three Lucarios appear that you'll have to contend with. Zoroark's design and marketing were an attempt to replicate the positive reception Lucario had previously gotten.

[[AC:Generation VI]]
* Dedenne is represented by Pichu, both of which are Pokémon related to and smaller than Pikachu.
* Chespin is represented with the playable Grass-type starter, Ivysaur, on Kongo Jungle 64 who spam their neutral special, with only Chespin itself able to come out of Poké Balls.
* Zygarde 50% starts with one big Yoshi that splits into many smaller Yoshis that resemble its pieces. It also reaches Legend status once enhanced to its complete form, as it is also ranked as a Legendary in Pokémon.
* Diancie is two Franklin Badge-equipped Kirbys that spam their rock move, for obvious reasons. Mega Diancie, which Diancie can be enhanced into, gives its equipped fighter a Franklin Badge, a nod to the creature's own reflective power of Magic Bounce.
* Mega Mewtwo Y is a Mewtwo that can get instant Final Smashes, since Mewtwo's Final Smash is Mega Mewtwo Y.
* Inkay is a blue Inkling (since both are squids) that have periodic earthquakes as a nod to how its signature Topsy-Turvy move works in Smash. An Inkay also spawns from a Poké Ball to use the move itself.
* Aegislash is two golden Meta Knights that fight you one at a time: The first constantly shields itself and rarely attacks, while the second is far more aggressive. This references Aegislash's signature Ability, Stance Change, which allows it to switch between Shield Form and Blade Form for defending and attacking, respectively.
* Volcanion is a giant Bowser fought on Norfair, all in reference to its fire typing. The stage is covered in fog due to Volcanion's ability to produce steam. You also take constant damage, probably a nod to the burn status condition that Volcanion is very good at inflicting.

[[AC:Generation VII]]
* Alolan Exeggutor is a giant Palutena, being a statuesque character already with green hair to represent its tree leaves. It prefers to use her Up Smash, a pillar of light to nod at its length, while taking place on the tropical Tortimer Island to represent Alola. Its ability when equipped grants a Back Shield, similar to how the head on Alolan Exeggutor's tail wards off attacks from behind.
* Mimikyu is a Pikachu in Luigi's Mansion, with Mimikyu showing up with the Poké Ball. Since Mimikyu mimics Pikachu, it would make sense he would possess him, and the mansion is a callback to the haunted Mart where Totem Mimikyu is fought.
* Rowlet is a tiny Ivysaur, the evolution of a fellow Grass starter. In reference to it also being part Flying, strong winds blow during the battle.
* Solgaleo is a Golden Incineroar (since both are feline Pokémon from Alola) with Solgaleo himself always coming out of the Poké Ball.
* Lunala is a Golden Ridley (as both resemble bats) with Lunala herself always coming out of the Poké Ball. You also fight it on the Omega form of the Luigi's Mansion stage due to the huge moon in the background.
* Necrozma is a Golden Mewtwo (as both are Psychic-types) and the golden coloring references Ultra Necrozma, who has a similar color scheme. In addition, its profile picture indicates it's a black Mewtwo under the gold, like how Necrozma's main form is black. Necrozma's ability as a support spirit is making the user immune to gravity changes, as a nod to Necrozma being able to naturally learn the move Gravity.
* Togedemaru is a team of Spiky-Eared Pichu with a bunch of Unira spawning, referencing its spikes.
* Pyukumuku is represented by 4 black Kirbys, each equipped with a Unira to start, along with a Pyukumuku Pokémon assist. It takes place on the Wii Resort beach, representing a minigame found in VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon where you can earn some extra money by picking up a number of Pyukumuku and tossing them back into the water.
* Zygarde (Complete Forme) comes with the Critical-Health Healing ability, which is what Zygarde does to itself upon taking this form in battle. It enhances from Zygarde 50% Forme, whose Spirit Battle is against a giant Yoshi followed by eight tiny Yoshis, referencing Zygarde's ability to be disassembled and reassembled.
* Nihilego is fought on the Omega form of The Great Cave Offensive, whose crystalline environment acts as an analogue to the species' homeworld, Ultra Deep Sea. The floor is poisoned in reference to its poison type. Ironically, while Nihilego is known for altering the minds of its hosts, the spirit grants immunity to screen-flipping, which is an effect often used by spirits of characters that use mind-related powers.
* Magearna is represented by the similar-in-appearance Metal Peach on Wily Castle Omega form. Two invisible Mega Men who prefer to use their neutral special, Metal Blade, also appear, giving the illusion that Magearna is using the move Gear Grind.

* VideoGame/DetectivePikachu is represented as a Pikachu with a cap. After a brief moment, three more exact replicas of Pikachu appear, and you have to find and KO the one that first showed up, much like a detective yourself.
* Partner Eevee's spirit ability raises your stats after eating food. That's essentially how the Candy mechanic works in Let's Go. The spirit fight against it is against a Mii Gunner who releases an Eevee from a Poké Ball in Pokémon Stadium, meaning the Mii represents Elaine, the female playable Trainer in Let's Go!, sending Eevee out like in a Pokémon battle.
* Partner Pikachu is fought in Saffron City, a location in Kanto, in a stamina battle to simulate how Pokémon battles work. It is accompanied by a Mii Brawler meant to represent Chase, the male playable Trainer in Let's Go!.

* All of the fights take place in the WVBA arena and are Stamina battles to simulate the fights from the games proper.
* Glass Joe's representative, Luigi, does more taunting than actual fighting and takes full launch damage even in a Stamina battle, making it very easy to beat him with one good hit.
* Von Kaiser is a Mario in brown who prefers side smash attacks and, since his moves are clearly telegraphed, he's still not much more difficult than Glass Joe.
* Piston Hondo is a giant Mac that favors side smash attacks.
* Great Tiger is an Incineroar (which is a tiger) who will summon two clones to assist him as his health drops, though only the main one needs to be [=KOed=] to win.
* Bald Bull is a giant Mac with SuperArmor who prefers dash attacks, in reference to Bald Bull's Move Bull Charge.
* Soda Popinski's fight constantly sees Item Tidal Waves of nothing but soda and his representative Spirit powers up after eating.
* King Hippo is King K. Rool who constantly Counters. Whiffing the counter leaves him exposed, just like the real King Hippo.
* Mister Sandman is a Donkey Kong with SuperArmor who likes to build up power and unleash it all at once. This pulls double duty as Mister Sandman is the regular FinalBoss of Punch-Out!! Wii with Donkey Kong himself being the TrueFinalBoss. Furthermore, the ground is slumber-inducing, alluding to the slumber-inducing nature of the mythical Sandman.
* Giga Mac is a giant Mac with SuperArmor who hits like a truck, then hits even harder thanks to innate Attack Boosts as the fight progresses. His Final Smash meter also charges quickly, which of course turns him into the actual Giga Mac.
* Doc Louis is a Little Mac that gets buffs to his speed, defense, and attack over time. Since Doc is a trainer, it gives the allusion that Doc is training Little Mac during the battle. He even runs the facility to train other spirits in terms of levels.
* Don Flamenco is a Ken fixated upon Shoryukens. This is referencing how Don Flamenco tends to perform a lot of uppercuts. The background music is Vega's stage theme, referencing another fighting Spaniard.

* Gyromite is a bunch of R.O.B.s that constantly utilize their down-b. The original game, Gyromite, had the R.O.B. peripheral press buttons down by using the aforementioned gyros.

[[AC:Classic series (Sonic 1/2/CD/3 & Knuckles)]]
* Dr. Eggman is Roy Koopa, who always wears CoolShades much like him, with the Clown Copter referencing the Egg Mobile he usually flies around in, as well as the Egg Walker from VideoGame/SonicAdventure2. The rest of the fight references his knack for technology, including a periodic Bob-omb rain, increased power from shooting items (also referencing the Egg Walker), and he's accompanied by Metal Sonic (see below).
** Alternatively, Eggman can be summoned using the cores of Dr. Crygor, a fellow mad scientist, Tamagon, who fires eggs as projectiles, and Chansey, who both looks like and carries around an egg.
* Tails is a yellow Fox, a fellow... well, fox who also uses various gadgets in battle. Gravity is reduced, referencing Tails' ability to fly, and a Knuckles Assist Trophy will fight alongside him. He also carries an enhanced Ray Gun, a nod to video games like VideoGame/SonicBattle and VideoGame/SonicBoom: Fire and Ice where he often carried a blaster. Summoning him requires Andy, another mechanic, and Vulpix, a fox-like Pokémon.
* Super Sonic is Sonic, but he's golden and gets random final smashes, which turn him into the actual Super Sonic. Being Golden also gives him the appearance and stat boosts that Super Sonic would normally get.
* Amy is a battle with a pink Inkling that starts the battle with a hammer, her main weapon. She can also swing them for a lot longer than normal as well. "Open Your Heart" also plays as a reference to the first main series title she was playable in.
* Metal Sonic is represented by the blue hedgehog himself, but (you guessed it) in permanent metal status. He also starts with his own Rocket Belt and Drill Arm that showcase his mobility and standard method of attacking in his home series. The battle is also a timed stamina fight to give the image of a boss fight with him. The VideoGame/SonicHeroes theme also plays during this battle, referencing his status as the TrueFinalBoss of that game.
* Knuckles can be summoned via a Gordo (spiked gloves), Muddy Mole (burrowing abilities), and a Grab Type core of any sort (scaling walls).

* Team Chaotix has Espio, Charmy, and Vector represented by a purple Sonic, a goggles-wearing Pichu, and a blue King K. Rool, respectively. They all periodically become invisible, a reference to Espio's rarely-seen camouflage ability.

* Chaos is represented by a permanently-metal Inkling fought in Fourside who becomes giant after taking enough damage, similar to how Chaos becomes the massive Perfect Chaos and attacked Station Square at the end of its debut game.
* Big the Cat is naturally depicted as a giant purple Incineroar. The floor can induce sleep, referencing his lazy, easy-going nature.
* Gamma is a red R.O.B. that starts with a ray gun and has an increase to its shooting power, referencing the gun that Gamma uses to attack. It's also fought in the Frigate Orpheon to represent Eggman's base in the Mystic Ruins where Gamma is first activated. It's also a stamina battle as a reference to both his fellow E-Series robots and the mech fights between Tails and Eggman in VideoGame/SonicAdventure2.
* The Chao spirit is represented by a team of Squirtles who get stronger when they eat food, just as Chao in VideoGame/SonicAdventure and VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 get stronger when you feed them. It can be enhanced into a Hero Chao.
* Shadow is represented by a light blue Sonic with larger rings around his gloves, and favors grabbing Clock items to slow you down as a nod to his Chaos Control. Shadow himself also appears at the start as an assist trophy, and the stage (New Pork City) is a reference to Westopolis, the first stage in his spinoff game. He can also be enhanced into Super Shadow.
* Rouge is a green Fox fought in Fourside, referencing the city levels in that game. She also has increased power in her leg strikes since she's a KickChick, she has increased jumping power to reference her flight, and as a nod to the Rouge Heal (or possibly just a reference to vampire bats), her melee attacks heal when they hit. The Sonic Heroes theme also hints at her status as team leader in that game, having recruited Shadow and E-123 Omega in Team Dark's campaign.

* Cream & Cheese are an Isabelle and Squirtle combo, and much like Tails, the fight is under low gravity to show off their flight powers.

* Omega is much like Gamma, except giant as a nod to his larger build compared to the previous E-Series robots, and starting the battle with a Drill to reference his Level 3 Omega Arm. Several shooting and explosive items also appear on the battlefield, fitting for a WalkingArmory like Omega.

* Blaze is a battle with a Female Robin that starts the battle with a Fire Flower and with her fire and explosive attacks powered up, which all reference her mastery of fire. The stage hazard is also lava, further referencing her immunity to fire.

* Jet can be summoned via the cores of Pidgey (Pidgey's final evolution, Pidgeot, is a giant hawk) and Akari Hayami (as a reference to his Extreme Gear).

* Silver is a Sonic that starts with a black hole and likes to use items a lot. Both characters are hedgehogs, while the black hole references his psychokinesis, and his preference for items is how he attacks in his game of origin. In addition, Silver's spirit boosts one's throwing ability, referencing his telekinesis and his playstyle of having to mentally throw around objects and foes alike.

* Sonic the Werehog needs to be summoned with a Togedemaru core (hedgehog) and a Werewolf core (...duh). It gives you extra attack power when equipped, much like Sonic had boosted strength when in this form. His spirit fight is against Wolf in the perpetually nighttime stage Luigi's Mansion, which also ends up being a reference to the Night of the Werehog animation, which took place in a haunted mansion.

* Infinite has you fighting a permanently-metal Sonic who can periodically flip the screen, a reference to the gravity-altering powers Infinite briefly displays during the Capital City stage. The fight takes place on Big Blue, reflecting the first and third boss fights against him in which Sonic is constantly running along a straight path.

* The Inkling Squid can be summoned with the cores of fellow squid Blooper, and Huey, who is a living paint can from a game revolved around colored paint.
* The battle with the Octolings pits you against a bunch of pink Inklings, which is basically what the enemy Octolings in both of the Splatoon games' single-player campaigns are. The fight takes place in Midgar, a futuristic but derelict town similar to the domes that all Octarians live in.
* The Great Zapfish is a giant Pikachu on an entirely electrified Omega Prism Tower. Not only is Prism Tower an electricity-themed location in its own game, but it somewhat resembles Inkopolis Tower where the Great Zapfish rests. Most fights in the power plant are against lightning-themed opponents on electrified stages (luckily, you get the electricity-nullifying Dr. Light right at the entrance), but the Zapfish in particular powers the entire place like it does in Splatoon.
* The regular Zapfish spirit is obtained right after fighting the Great Zapfish. Its fight in the Spirit Board is also similar to the Great Zapfish, in an electrified Battlefield Prism Tower against a team of Pichus.
* Captain Cuttlefish has you pitted against a Mii using the Skull Kid outfit and Vince's wig, being the closest thing to looking like him.
* Crusty Sean is a fight against a yellow Inkling in Saffron City, representing Inkopolis Plaza. As a seller of fine footwear, both combatants' speed occasionally increases during the battle.
* Bisk is represented as a Pac-Man who prefers enhanced kick attacks. Both characters are yellow, and the kick power references how he runs a shoe store. The enemy also gets a boost to movement speed after a while because his shoes are so light. His effect when equipped increases foot attack power.
* Agent 8 (called Octoling Boy & Girl in-game) is a pink female Inkling and a blue male Inkling that have an increase to their specials.
* Sheldon the arms dealer is represented by a team of Inklings who have increased ranged attack strength, and take advantage of it with the numerous ranged weapons that appear as items. As a shopkeeper, he specialises in spirits that are weapon-based.
* Annie is represented by Peach, who uses Toad for a few of her moves, a reference to Moe, the clown fish that lives in her hair.
* Li'l Judd is a tiny Mr. Game & Watch who spams Judge. He's accompanied by two Inklings, representing two teams in a Turf War.
* Pearl & Marina give a Undamaged Stats Up, which can be seen as a rather literal take on their catchphrase "Don't get cooked, stay off the hook!". When fought as Spirits, they are represented by a light-skinned (Pearl) and dark-skinned (Marina) female Inkling duo, with their Splatoon 1 counterparts, the Squid Sisters, appearing as Assist Trophies.
* DJ Octavio is pretty straightforward: to get him, you need to summon him with the cores of an Octoling and an Octorok, both of whom are octopi, as well as Mooks. He can also be upgraded into his Mecha, the Octobot King.

* ROB 64 is naturally represented by R.O.B. and is a stamina battle. Other Star Fox characters may join him as allies, but only R.O.B. needs to be taken out to win, which may reference how an enemy reaching the Great Fox (and ROB) was a GameOver condition in VideoGame/StarFoxCommand. In World of Light, he can fix and pilot the broken Great Fox to traverse the space area.
* Peppy Hare is represented by a King Dedede with the Bunny Hood and with Falco and Fox backing him up, which represents his status as Team Star Fox's mentor.
* Slippy Toadwho, despite the name, is actually a frog is a green Greninja who is constantly running away while Fox does most of the fighting (but only Greninja needs to be beaten to win). The match is also timed. That's right, you are reenacting "Fox, get this guy off me!" — except this time, YOU are "this guy". Alternatively, Slippy can be summoned with the cores of Lin (a mechanic) and Winky (a frog). In World of Light, he can fix and pilot the broken Great Fox to traverse the space area.
* Tricky is naturally represented by another fellow dinosaur: a yellow Yoshi.
* The Wolfen is none other than Wolf, with a quick charging Final Smash since his involves assaulting the opponent along his team in their Wolfens.
* Krystal is a gray Fox, her love interest, accompanied by a blue Falco, another one of her teammates. Her Assist Trophy also appears.
* Leon Powalski is a Yoshi, both being reptiles with long tongues, with a Wolf ally due to being in the same team. The player has a Falco ally, referencing their shared rivalry, and the player loses if Falco is KO'd, since Leon would constantly go after Falco in Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault.
* Summoning Andross in his polygonal form from the first game requires a Porygon and the Commander from X (a Japan-only Game Boy space combat sim that used VectorGraphics), two other polygonal beings.
* Another amusing summon would be General Pepper, who requires Colonel Campbell (another ranked military commander) and a Labrador from VideoGame/Nintendogs.
* With the removal of the Landmaster as the Final Smash for team Star Fox, it returns as a spirit in the form of a giant R.O.B. with a powerful neutral special. When equipped, the player starts the battle with a Super Scope equipped, representing the Landmaster's main cannon.

* Most of the Street Fighter Spirits have one thing in common: they are all set in Omega stages in Stamina Mode with a decrease in jump power, which is accurate to how Street Fighter fights usually take place.
* In World of Light, most of the Street Fighter Spirits are found on a map of Earth, with the player's character riding an airplane and flying to each enemy's country of origin. The whole setup brings Street Fighter II to mind, which did the same thing between matches.

* Blanka has you fight a green-palette Donkey Kong who starts off with a Screw Attack, referencing Blanka's own electricity powers and mid-air roll attacks. The stage, Jungle Japes, references Blanka's home stage, Brazil.
* Zangief is a shiny Incineroar fought in the Boxing Ring, which is fitting considering they're both wrestlers. Also, Incineroar's neutral Special is basically Zangief's Spinning Lariat. As a Dojo Master, he teaches the Overthrow Style.
* Likewise, Chun-Li is a Zero Suit Samus who favors kicks. She starts using her VideoGame/StreetFighterAlpha incarnation, but can be enhanced into her VideoGame/StreetFighterII variant, which increases physical attacks.
* Guile is a Captain Falcon that favors its strengthened kick attacks, which is his fighting style. Guile himself also shows up in the stage as an assist trophy. You also fight him on the Omega form of the Pilotwings stage, which is the closest you'll get to an Air Force base. Guile can also be summoned with the cores of the Arwing (an airplane) and Nash, his best friend.
* To summon Dhalsim, you need the cores of Fire Man (referencing Dhalsim's primary form of attack) and Great Tiger (who, like Dhalsim himself, is Indian).
* Cammy is a green Sheik, another acrobatic blond-haired fighter, fought on Bridge of Eldin, which is very similar to Cammy's stage.
* T. Hawk is a blue Incineroar, since his up special somewhat resembles T. Hawk's Condor Spire move. His grabs are also increased in power, since T. Hawk is a grappler.
* Fei Long is fought as a Lucario, whose aura-based attacks are the closest thing to Fei Long's fiery kung fu.
* Balrog is obviously represented by Little Mac, a fellow boxer, but he's been made bigger and focuses on staying grounded and using his neutral special, emulating Balrog's trademark charged punches. You also fight him on the Omega form of Fourside, which greatly resembles Las Vegas.
* Vega is represented as Meta Knight, as both wear masks, use bladed weapons, and are Dashing Hispanics. He also has a tendency to jump around a lot, referencing Vega's acrobatic fighting style.
* Sagat's fight brings him back to his VideoGame/StreetFighterI roots as an SNKBoss, being a combo-happy Ryu with massive amounts of SuperArmor. During the fight, Ryu only uses three of his special moves: Hadouken and Shakunetsu Hadouken, representing Sagat's High and Low Tiger Shots, and Shoryuken, representing his Tiger Uppercut.
* M. Bison is represented by a Ganondorf, as both are muscular villains who use powerful darkness-based attacks. As the fight continues, M. Bison will grow stronger, as a subtle reference to how he's often a SequentialBoss. His ability to reflect projectiles is a nod to his Psycho Reflect V-Skill from VideoGame/StreetFighterV, and Ganondorf's Final Smash is similar to Bison's signature Psycho Crusher attack. In order to summon him, you need Balrog, Vega, and Sagat's cores, all of whom were his underlings in Shadaloo in VideoGame/StreetFighterII. M. Bison's Spirit enhances PSI attacks when equipped, as his signature Psycho Power is the SF-verse equivalent to PsychicPowersexcept that it's also MadeOfEvil.
* Akuma is a Ryu with upgraded specials while you have lowered defense. This makes sense, as Akuma is a master of the same style Ryu uses and is much, much stronger. Where he's located in World of Light pulls triple duty, as he's found in a seemingly random location in the Dark Realm, referencing his affinity for the Satsui No Hadou (often called the "Dark Hadou"), his nature as a wanderer looking for worthy opponents (he just so happens to be blocking off access to Ken), and his tendency to appear as a BonusBoss (he is an optional spirit who can only be fought after defeating Galeem). He's also got the highest attack stat out of any spirit in the game to reference him being one of the first cases of an SNKBoss.

* Charlie Nash is represented by Captain Falcon, similarly to Guile, as they both use the same fighting style. He also starts the match with Death's Scythe, referencing Nash being KilledOffForReal twice in his home series.
* Dan Hibiki loves to taunt, referencing the number of taunt options he has. Also, in reference to his JokeCharacter status, his stats go up to 2003 at Level 99 and his "skill" automatically gives you 30% damage with no benefit. Given that he's one of Ryu and Ken's Moveset Clones, it's fitting that the latter is the fighter that represents him.
* Cody Travers is represented by Richter at New Donk City Hall (a stand-in for Final Fight[='=]s Metro City), who gets increased damage from attacking with battering weapons such as the Home-Run Bat and the Ore Club, referencing Cody's tendency to use improvised weapons like steel pipes. When you equip him, he improves your throws.
* Sakura Kasugano is represented by her idol, Ryu, whose Hadokens are stronger (and he is more likely to throw a Shakunetsu Hadoken).

* Juri Han is represented by a Bayonetta that only uses kick attacks, referencing her fighting style. [[spoiler:In addition, both characters have power related to left eyes, with Juri's Feng Shui Engine replacing the eye she lost and Bayonetta being the Left Eye of the World.]]

* The Freezie is represented by the Ice Climbers, who start the battle with a Freezie in hand and also have an ice-based special attack that resembles the Freezie.
* Sidesteppers are represented by three waves of identically-colored Mr. Game and Watches who can damage you by dashing, with each wave faster than the last.

* Lakitu puts you up against Iggy Koopa, representing the Lakitu itself, and several small, red Bowsers, representing the Spinies it throws.
* Bullet Bill has you fight four Captain Falcons, who always go for the Bullet Bill items that are generously provided.
* King Bob-Omb's fight pits you against a large, black Kirby while copious amounts of Bob-Ombs are provided.
* Wiggler is a yellow Yoshi who gains a boost in attack power at 60% damage, just like how Wiggler TurnsRed and gets more aggressive after Mario or Luigi stomps on it. The stage also generates plenty of Lip's Sticks, so flowers can be easily placed on Yoshi's head to further emulate Wiggler's trademark appearance.
* Chargin' Chuck is represented by a group of Warios who like to do their dash attack, which in this game is Wario's signature Shoulder Bash, on Battlefield-form Super Mario Maker, which is locked in the style of their debut game, VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld. The fact that there's four of them may also reference the "Splittin' Chuck", a Chargin' Chuck variant that can summon two extra Chucks.
* Wart is a fight against King K. Rool on the Magicant stage with a sleep floor implemented, representing Subcon being the land of dreams. And as a reference to his boss fight in particular, Peach is included with her Turnip attacks, representing the Dream Machine that spawned vegetables to feed to him.
* Bloopers appear as a trio of tiny Inkling boys that do nothing but jump up and down in a stage with reduced gravity, giving them the same floaty movements they usually have in VideoGame/SuperMarioBros.
* Goomba is a bunch of mini Donkey Kongs that only punch.
* Toadette (appearing here as her VideoGame/CaptainToadTreasureTracker incarnation) is represented by a pink female Villager with a Mii Brawler in a Toad Costume as her partner. As both characters are treasure hunters, they will go after items at every opportunity. As a Master Spirit, she manages explorations of the Ruins and usually finds Spirit Points.
* Koopa Troopa is a Squirtle that favors using Koopa shells, and gets an increase in defense after a while.
* The Super Star is a gold Rosalina, due to her and Luma being the closest in the playable cast to a star, who become invincible periodically to reference the power-up effect. Additionally, numerous Super Stars appear.
* Shy Guys are represented by a trio of Red Miis in Shy Guy costumes that favor throwing items and their neutral specials, which are all projectile weapons. Throwing items at enemies (and enemies at other enemies) was a big part of VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2[='=]s offense.
* Boo is a grey Kirby that can turn invisible after a while.
* The Bob-Ombs are a bunch of dark blue Kirbys, being spherical and dark like them. They have a strength boost in thrown items, unsurprisingly the only ones spawning being Bob-Ombs.
* Toad is a Mii-Brawler in a Toad Costume that prefers going after Mushrooms that spawn on the stage, which is what Toads normally eat.
* Plessie is a giant Yoshi with you being unable to swim, a reference to how Plessie gives you rides through the rapids.
* Toadsworth is a Mario (whose Worker costume matches Toadsworth's colors) on Peach's Castle where only Super Mushrooms and Poison Mushrooms spawn.
* The Shine Sprite is Rosalina that can get random invincibility (to show similarities with the Super Star), and gets random Final Smashes as a nod to the Shine Gate. Multi-colored Kirbys also show up to reference Piantas, and the stage is Delfino Plaza, where the Shine Sprites make their home.
* Metal Mario is Mario in Metal status, but also has increased attack and defense as a reference to his appearance in the original Smash. His theme from Melee also plays.
* Gold Mario can be summoned through Metal Mario (since gold is a type of metal) as well as a Fire Flower and a Super Star to reference the Golden Flower.
* Fox Luigi is...Luigi under the effects of the Super Leaf. There's high winds on the stage to reference the item's hovering ability.

* Tatanga's fight is against Morton Koopa and firearms constantly spawn, referencing the final battle against him in Super Mario Land where Mario boards a fighter plane and engages in a ShootEmUp.

* The Biddybuggy is represented by a tiny Rosalina & Luma on the Figure-8 Circuit, where everyone moves faster, as the Biddybuggy is a lightweight vehicle. Also, Rosalina appears as the car's representative because one of the staff ghosts in Mario Kart 8 used Baby Rosalina in the Biddybuggy on Cloudtop Cruise (the song used for this spirit battle).

* Geno's fight is a timed battle against Sheik, assisted by a white Kirby representing Mallow as well as Mario, Peach, and Bowser. Mario spawns with a Koopa Shell in hand, as Mario uses Koopa Shells as weapons in that game, including a giant one as his InfinityPlusOneSword, the Lazy Shell. Shiek also doesn't show up until 2 other fighters are beaten (and Peach doesn't show up until you beat one of the initial 3), as you could only have 3 people in the party at the same time in his home game. The stage and music (Good Egg Galaxy and Rainbow Road, respectively) also allude to Geno's home being the Star Road. As for the Geno spirit itself, the reason why it has 10,000 power on its own is because Geno Whirl is a OneHitKill attack that hits the damage cap (9999 damage) against normal enemies and Exor.
* Mallow has his own Spirit fight represented as three white Robins for their lightning attacks, even going after lightning bolt items that appear. The battle is also fought on Magicant, representing Nimbus Land.

* Paper Bowser is Bowser that eventually gets attack and defence buffs as well as temporary invincibility with Star Rods constantly spawning, referencing the final battle with him in the first Paper Mario game. * Kammy Koopa is a Bayonetta that starts with a Star Rod, and turns everyone invisible for a short while. Both characters are considered witches, and the Star Rod represents her wand, with the invisibility being casted by her magic. The battle is also fought on the Paper Mario stage.
* Vivian is represented by a purple Mr. Game and Watch that is constantly invisible, and set on Luigi's Mansion. The invisibility references her field ability, and the mansion is a reference to Twilight Town, the place where she is recruited.
* Dimentio is represented as a pink Meta Knight and is fought in the Paper Mario stage, but the real danger of the fight is the giant, aggressive purple Luigi referencing [[spoiler:Super Dimentio]].
* Huey is a bunch of multi-colored Inklings that like to use their specials. Since Huey is a paint can, he would like to paint over the battlefield, much like the Inklings, and the colors are specifically colors that Huey paints with.
* The Shadow Queen is a summon-exclusive spirit taking the form she uses while possessing Peach. She is summoned using the cores of Vivian and Gengar — Vivian because she's the KingMook to the Shadow Sirens, and Gengar because she's technically a ghost with poisonous abilities. As to why she appears already possessing Peach instead of her true form? She's already a spirit in her home game, and she possesses Peach upon coming in. Finally, she's an Ace-class instead of a Legend since her powers weren't yet fully restored by the time she was summoned, and she was defeated before she could reach her full power. As to why she's summon-exclusive? Grodus summoned her from her slumber prior to her possessing anyone.

They shift sizes during the battle, referencing how they affect Bowser's body in the game. In addition, they are fighting in Brinstar, a likely reference to Bowser's body.

* Dreambert is a Luigi fought in Magicant with the floor being sleep-inducing. Dreambert has dream power, to explain the sleeping floor, and the fighter is Luigi because he is able to use Dreambert's powers to cross to the Dream world, which is what Magicant represents.

** Rabbid Mario starts the battle with a Ray Gun, just like Mario and his Rabbid counterpart have guns as their special weapons in their game.
** Rabbid Peach starts out with a Super Scope. She also tends to avoid conflict and heals over time since she is both the tank and Medic in the game.
** Rabbid Kong foregoes the weaponry and is just a white DK that has increased punch power, much like how he fights in his boss battle.

* Pauline is represented by a Peach (wearing Pauline's color scheme) with Donkey Kong and Mario as allies on the 75m stage. Mario starts the battle with a Hammer, and Peach will try to stay out of the way as much as possible, being the original DamselInDistress of the Mario games. Movement speed and jump ability are also drastically reduced, forcing the player to move about as efficiently as Jumpman in the original Donkey Kong.

* Wedding Bowser is represented with a fight against Bowser with a Peach ally in New Donk City.

* The Golden Dash Mushroom is a gold Mii Brawler in a Toad costume, resembling the Mushroom itself, with increased speed, super armor, and occasional uncontrollable speed, referencing the item's ability to grant multiple dashes in a row and the ease to ram on opponents while using it. The only items that spawn are items found in Mario Kart itself, like Lightning Bolts, Koopa Shells, Stars, and Bullet Bills.
* The River Survival mode is represented by the playable characters of VideoGame/SuperMarioParty in its artwork: Rosalina, Yoshi and Bowser, with an orange Kirby as a stand-in for the Goomba, in a timed battle where Bob-Ombs rain, referencing the mode's limited time to go through and its various hazards. However, you win when time runs out. Additionally, the stage in which it takes place is Kongo Falls, which closely resembles the setting featured in River Survival.

* Wanda is a tiny Palutena, due to being a small fairy with a staff, accompanied by Mario, Peach, and Yoshi, the characters she helps to guide in her game. You only have to KO Palutena to win, and the others show up one at a time.

* Sandbag takes the form of a white Samus who simply sits on the stage and does nothing. You have 10 seconds to KO her, and when the countdown approaches 0, Home Run Bats spawn in abundant numbers. The entire fight is meant to emulate the format of the otherwise-absent Home Run Contest game mode, which involves dealing as much damage as you can to a Sandbag in 10 seconds before launching it. To get the spirit in the first place so it can show up on the Spirit Board requires you to complete a challenge — specifically to tank 250% damage in a single stockas in, your damage actually has to rise to 250% — healing doesn't count during a match, referencing how much abuse Sandbag itself tanks on a regular basis.

* The Fighting Alloy Team is a battle with a Construction Worker Mario, Green Kirby, Blue Zelda, and Red Captain Falcon, matching colors with the Alloy that shares their body type. They are fought on a Battlefield-form Final Destination, which is similar to where they were originally fought. They also have to be taken out 4 times each as a reference to how it was a gauntlet of them.
* The Primid fight is against a horde of Mr. Game and Watches, a nod to how the Subspace Army was created from Mr. Game and Watch's body, and it takes place on Pokémon Stadium with hazards turned off in reference to the stadium that Brawl[='=]s Adventure mode starts in.
* Duon is a stamina battle against giant Ice Climbers aboard the Halberd, where the two-faced robot was fought in Subspace Emissary. To represent Duon's simultaneous melee/range capabilities, Nana wields a powered-up Super Scope, while Popo will use his hammer. In Brawl, Duon's pink half used projectiles, and its blue half used melee attacks.
* Mites are represented by a team of tiny multicolored Mr. Game and Watches — easy to knock out, but still very annoying when they gang up on you.
* Tabuu's spirit inhabits a Metal Bayonetta in a Stamina battle, her butterfly wings being the closest to resemble his own. The player will occasionally take sudden damage to represent Tabuu's near-unavoidable Off Waves, and his battle theme is the music playing. It's also a reference to the fact that Bayonetta has also fought a blue cosmic entity that is a god of a realm in one of her games, Aesir - God of Chaos.
* The Ancient Minister is represented by R.O.B., assisted by other R.O.B.s, all carrying Bombers, fighting on the Halberd stage. The Ancient Minister is the playable R.O.B. in Brawl, and the Bombers evoke the Subspace Bombs, which require two R.O.B.s to activate. The Halberd is a major set-piece of The Subspace Emissary.
* The Bytans, which are essentially spheres with teeth, are naturally inhabiting a Pac-Man quartet.
* The Smash Ball's spirit naturally has sudden Final Smash access all throughout it. The player has to run out the clock against one Mii Fighter, which suddenly gets a Final Smash, and so does the player. Another Mii Fighter joins in, they both get Final Smashes, and so does the player again. Repeat the pattern a third time, and the clock runs out deeming the player the winner.

* Count Cannoli is a Wario that prefers to go after transformation items. Since Wario has also been a thief in his home game, this is the best person for Cannoli to possess (before Joker's release), and his preference for transformation items is to keep up his disguise. Bizarrely, "Ashley's Song" is playing during this, which, being an IAmSong, could be a reference to the fact that Cannoli is really a character in a ShowWithinAShow.

* The Wii Balance Board (yes, really) looks like a typical Wii Fit Trainer battle on the surface, but as the fight goes on, both fighters move faster and jump higher, as using the Wii Balance Board in real life is meant to help you lose weight. To drive this home even further, the Balance Board's Trainer ability grants the "Lightweight" trait to spirits.

* The Ouendan Cheerleaders are a trio of blue-suited Isabelles who favor neutral air attacks (pom poms) and get stronger after a while, as the targets of the Ouendan/EBA do when they're cheered on enough. "Ring a Ding" plays during their fight to represent the licensed pop soundtrack from their home game. As a spirit, the Cheerleaders start you off with a Super Launch Star, a reference to the EBA's star-shaped insignia.
* The Elite Beat Agents themselves are three black-suited Mii Swordfighters fought in Saffron City, referencing the urban setting that most of their missions take place in. "Escape from the City" plays during this fight, being the closest-sounding song to "Walkie Talkie Man", the song of the first stage in EBA. Like with the Ouendan Cheerleaders, their attack power increases after a while.

* The Chorus Kids are represented by a trio of constantly singing Jigglypuff. They fight in the Wii Fit Studio, as a nod to their rhythm game's white background. Each one is incrementally larger than the last to give the (very brief) illusion of perspective.
* Munchy Monk is represented by Ken, who spends most of the battle going after the many food items that appear throughout. The three gray Kirbys accompanying him represent dumplings, Munchy's TrademarkFavoriteFood, and the battle takes place on the Spirit Train, the closest thing there is to the train he rides in Rhythm Heaven Fever.
* For the Reporter and Wrestler, the Wrestler is represented by Pikachu Libre in the Boxing Ring, and the Reporter is represented by the constant presence of Assist Trophy Yuri Kozukata.
* Baxter and Forthington are represented by Duck Hunt (as Baxter, the dog) and Incineroar (Forthington, the cat), fighting atop the light planes from VideoGame/Pilotwings as a nod to the planes they fly in. To replicate the badminton birdie being swatted back and forth, the stage is littered with throwable items that are frequently used against you.
* The Sumo Brothers are a giant red and blue Donkey Kong with increased physical power. They taunt a lot (referring to their posing), the ground periodically shakes throughout the battle (referencing their stomping), and their theme music is that of another fellow sumo wrestler: E. Honda.
* The Sick Beats Doctor is a Dr. Mario (who also examines and eliminates harmful viruses) on a Wrecking Crew stage covered in a poisonous cloud.
* To summon the Wandering Samurai, you'll need to have the VideoGame/SakuraSamurai and some Ghosts for him to cut down.
* Karate Joe is represented by a Ryu who favors using smash attacks, and his punches and kicks are stronger as well, as Joe's training regimen includes punching and kicking hard objects like pots, barrels and bombs, which are referenced by the crates and barrels which spawn.

* Coraline from Ultimate Angler is an Isabelle who favors her side special (Fishing Rod), and is fought on the boat section of Wuhu Island. She is accompanied by a Mii Gunner wearing a sailor's cap, representing the player. Her ability granting the player a boomerang is likely the closest you can get to a fishing rod; casting and retrieving.
* Shinobu, from Ninja Launcher, is a battle against a Sheik and a Mii Swordfighter that constantly launch themselves at you with Bullet Bills.
* Nico Fire, the host of Slot Car Rivals, is represented by a yellow Ness who is accompanied by two very fast characters: Fox and Sonic, who are even more uncontrollably fast thanks to the spirit's side effect. Also, the battle is fought on the fast-moving cars in Big Blue, and you need to ride Pico's Wild Goose to even reach him.
* Iris Archwell, from Monster Manor, is represented by a female pink-haired Villager with a Mii Brawler ally on the haunted Luigi's Mansion stage. As the house is full of ghosts, everyone randomly turns invisible.
* Crispin from Feed Mii is the resident cooking expert Link in a white apron like tunic. However, the real threat is the curry-filled Mii Swordfighter with him as Crispin and the player's job is to feed the Find Mii heroes, not be the hero themselves.
* The Dark Emperor from Find Mii II is represented by a giant green Ridley with super armor and an aggressive fighting style. On the Find Mii stage, you may also have to deal with the real Dark Emperor as a BackgroundBoss. In addition, Dark Emperor's goal in Find Mii II was to swallow all the light in the world and plunge the world into darkness, hence why he is a spirit under Dharkon's Command.

* Kyle Hyde is a battle against Snake in a black attire with fog rolling in, referencing the character sprites being black and white. The battle occurs in Fourside, serving as a nod to the sequel's setting in the city.
* Alexandra Roivas is a battle against Zero Suit Samus wearing a black outfit, set on Luigi's Mansion; after she takes about 50% damage, the screen inverts. Alexandra spent the entirety of her home game in the gothic Roivas mansion, and one of the more iconic sanity effects in Eternal Darkness was the tendency for the character to suddenly be walking on the ceiling upon entering a room. Additionally, both characters were played by Creator/JenniferHale.
* The battle with Lip features a Mii Swordfighter with Lip's outfit wielding, of course, Lip's Stick.
* Muddy Mole is represented by a Donkey Kong who favors his side special. The battle takes place in the Great Cave Offensive, which spawns plenty of Pitfall items, leaving ample opportunities for both fighters to get trapped in pits.
* VideoGame/CaptainRainbow himself is Captain Falcon and starts out as Nick, who can be enhanced into his super hero alter ego. He's fought in the Fountain of Dreams where star-based items spawn, since dreams and wishes were major themes in his home game. Takamaru also fights by his side, referencing how he appears in the game.
* The VideoGame/UrbanChampion Fighter is a timed battle against Little Mac on an Ω version of New Donk City Hall, where Little Mac is unable to jump, just as the characters in Urban Champion are locked to the ground as they fight. If the battle takes too long, then Kapp'n arrives with his bus to try and take the player away as a reference to the police car that will shop up when the timer runs out and arrest the fighter who's closer to their side of the screen.
* Looksley, from the UsefulNotes/DSiWare game Looksley's Line-Up is represented by Isabelle (her dog ears being the closest thing in the game to Looksley's rabbit ears without using the Bunny Hood) and a male Villager. Since his game is a HiddenObjectGame, everyone occasionally turns invisible.
* Ashley Robbins is a fight in Luigi's Mansion against a red Isabelle with an invisible Villager (representing the ghostly "D") as her partner.
* The Wild Gunman naturally has your opponent be Duck Hunt constantly using his down-B special. What completes the motif, though, is that you're both set at 300% damage as well as guns constantly spawning on the stage, allowing you to try and replicate the "ShowdownAtHighNoon" aspect of the original game if you so choose.
* Akari Hayami is represented by a red Wii Fit Trainer on the Summit, a mountainous stage with slippery platforms that occasionally tilts to one side to give off the illusion of zooming down a mountain slope.
* Drake Redcrest is a fight against a taunting Captain Falcon as both have similar designs and as an action hero, Drake is known for his amazing poses. He's also joined by a little metal R.O.B. to stand in for Chibi-Robo and is fought in the living room, where he would patrol at night.
* Wonder Blue is the blue swordsman Chrom backed up by some Villagers to reference the Unite Morphs the game is known for. Also, only Chrom must be defeated, since the characters not being controlled by the player can only be temporarily knocked out in 101.
* The ST Falcon is a Samus (in her VideoGame/MetroidFusion suit to match the blue painting on the Falcon) on Port Town: Aero Dive where nothing but Super Scopes appear.
* Tempo's fight pits you against a Fox with a Home-Run Bat (representing Tempo's musical staff) on Pac-Land (representing the auto-scrolling nature of Tempo's home game). The damage done by reflected projectiles is boosted during this fight, a reference to how bosses in VideoGame/HarmoKnight are harmed by reflecting their own attacks back at them.
* VideoGame/MachRider is represented as a Captain Falcon armed with a Super Scope to represent the blaster on the Mach Rider's bike. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Mach Rider medley was an alternate BGM on the VideoGame/FZero-themed Big Blue stage.
* Mallo is a Jigglypuff who favors using grabs and throws, since Mallo's gimmick is that he can only push and pull blocks in his home series.
* The Gangster, Lady, and Policeman are represented by Wolf (the Gangster), Peach (the Lady), and Ike (the Policeman). Wolf attempts to fight you, while Peach and Ike spam their counters, since you're not supposed to attack the Lady and Policeman. The battle is set on Battlefield-form Tomodachi Life, referencing the urban setting of Hogan's Alley.
* Rusty Slugger is represented by the Duck Hunt Dog, who spends most of the fight attacking you with Home Run Bats.
* Musashi from VideoGame/SushiStrikerTheWayOfSushido is a Young Link who favors his side special, in place of tossing plates at the enemy. Since sushi plates haven't been an edible food item since Brawl, rice balls will periodically spawn instead. The background music is also "Gourmet Race" from Kirby's Super Star, which played during a food-themed minigame.
* The VideoGame/SakuraSamurai is a light blue Villager armed with a Killing Edge, matching both his preferred weapon and cartoonish design. The stage is also Suzaku Castle, which looks a lot like the area the first boss from his game is found; fittingly, that same boss track is playing too.
* The pig from is a fight against a bunch of pink Yoshis on the Duck Hunt stage, representing the game's setting, a field with cubic grass and plants. The Yoshi's get stat boosts after eating, referencing the game's main mechanic of eating other animals to get stronger. To further the connection, the only food that spawns during this fight is grilled steak.
* Raymond Bryce is a battle against Fox fought on Fourside, where you have to contend with strong winds and constant earthquakes, a couple of the numerous natural disasters you have to deal with in the game.
* The fish from VideoGame/BalloonFight is represented by a blue King Dedede who favors using his Inhale move. While you won't be killed instantly if Dedede tries to eat you, you will have to deal with the actual big fish while fighting him on the Balloon Fight stage.
* Elena, a priestess, is a Palutena fought on the Great Plateau Tower to allude to the tower where she lives over the course of the game. Every now and then, a bunch of meat appears on the stage and she'll become stronger from eating it, resembling the conditions of her curse.
* Dillon can be summoned with the help of a Sandshrew (an armadillo-like Pokémon) and Wheelie (who has a RollingAttack similar to Dillon). The battle against Dillon's spirit is against Sonic in Midgar, an urban metropolis similar to the arenas in Dead Heat Breakers.
* Diskun, the mascot for the Famicom Disk System (an add-on for the Japanese Famicom that used re-writable disks to play games) is represented by a one-on-four battle against Young Link, Pit, Samus and Simon, as all of their series (Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda, VideoGame/KidIcarus, Franchise/Metroid and Franchise/Castlevania) first made their debut in this format before being released on regular cartridges.
* Zael is represented by Simon, with a Lucina ally standing in for his love interest, Calista.
* The protagonists from VideoGame/MagicalVacation are a male and female Villager who favor using items that represent some of the main magical elements in their game: Fire Flowers (fire), Freezies (water), Lightning Bolts (lightning), Pitfalls (wood/earth), and Gust Bellows (wind).
* The Maruhide Shop Owner from Trade & Battle: Card Hero is represented by Mario, whom he greatly resembles. The only items that will appear in his Spirit battle are Assist Trophies, which act as stand-ins for the different monsters/cards in his game.
* Vince from Art Academy appears as a Mii Swordfighter wearing his costume (complete with paintbrush sword). Before you can fight him, you have to face off against an Inkling who favors his side Smash (Inkbrush) attack, and the Vince assist trophy.

* VideoGame/Bomberman is represented by Young Link on the Wrecking Crew stage. Young Link favors his down special, which is, you guessed it, bombs. The music track is Bomb Man's theme from Mega Man, who coincidentally was originally named Bomber Man before Capcom was forced to shorten the name because of this character predating him. Bomberman himself even shows up as an assist trophy.

* Allen, the main character of VideoGame/Culdcept Revolt, is represented by Shulk, with King K. Rool and Ridley as allies. To replicate the experience of a Cepter summoning monsters to the field, only Assist Trophy items will spawn.
* Culdra, as a goddess who is responsible for the existence of the game's world, is a Palutena with increased magic attacks. You also get a buff in magic or PSI-related attacks.

* VideoGame/Rayman is a battle against Sonic, who represents Rayman's windup punch (with his side smash) and big sneakers, and a Sukapon assist trophy that represents his friend Globox as well as his FloatingLimbs.

* VideoGame/Shantae is a battle against Zero Suit Samus in her orange Zero Mission outfit, since both characters are from the Metroidvania genre, sport a ponytail, and BareYourMidriff. The battle takes place on the Pirate Ship stage, referencing her encounters with pirates in her series. Transformation type items are also set to spawn, alluding to Shantae's own transformation abilities.
* Risky Boots is a Daisy on the Pirate Ship as a reference to being a pirate herself. Bob-Ombs rain periodically, hinting at her preference of using explosives, and ironically, being defeated using them in many of her fights. What's more interesting is that in Adventure, she's found guarding the spirit of K. Rool, who once assumed the role of pirate as well.

* King Knight is a yellow King K. Rool with a star rod equipped. Being (self-proclaimed) royalty, King Knight would obviously possess the vicious reptile who has a gold crown and style, and the Star Rod is supposed to be the Scepter that he uses for his attacks. His stage is the Mushroom Kingdom U, whose different layouts represent different stages found in Shovel Knight: Acorn Plains being the Plains of Passage, Rock Candy Mines being the Stranded Ship, Meringue Clouds to the Flying Machine, and Slide-Lift Tower to the Clockwork Tower.
* Plague Knight is Doctor Mario who starts the battle with a Bob-omb and favors attacking with explosives. Both characters are types of doctors, and using different explosive items references how Plague Knight uses different bomb concoctions to attack in his story campaign. His stage is the Unova Pokémon League, which is castle-like in appearance and represents the Explodatorium, his boss stage, which heavily resembles a fortress castle.
* Specter Knight is Richter who starts the battle with a Death's Scythe and increased movement speed. The Death Scythe is a reference to Specter Knight's main weapon and the speed references his Dash Slashes in his playable incarnation. His being Richter references Richter getting brainwashed in Symphony of the Night and helping to revive Dracula, . Him being battled on the Bridge of Eldin that periodically has a gap in its center after a while . Also, his particular coloring gives him a red bandanna, referring to his red cloak, but it also resembles a similar one .

* Akira is Ryu accompanied by the Akira assist trophy, set on Omega Coliseum in a stamina battle, similar to Street Fighter spirit battles, but unlike them, the gravity is higher to represent the moon jumping in Virtua Fighter 1.
