* As a character, Shinji Ikari is an example across the continuities of ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' and ''Anime/RebuildOfEvangelion''. He starts out as an insecure, socially awkward NiceGuy who has trouble dealing with people, but also has plenty of untapped strength and potential. Once he becomes an EVA pilot, though, he experiences [[BreakTheCutie serious psychological trauma]] fighting the Angels. By the end, [[spoiler:after Kaworu's death, he's become a self-loathing wreck, lost all hope and begs for others to help him. He's about ready to allow Third Impact and [[AssimilationPlot instrumentality]] to happen, just so he can stop dealing with all the misery and loneliness in his life]]. ''Rebuild'' has Shinji become much more assertive and powerful than his anime counterpart. What happens here? [[spoiler:In trying to kill Zeruel, ''he'' ends up triggering Third Impact through his sheer determination, killing most of what was left of humanity and damaging the Earth's biosphere even more severely.]] Poor kid just can't catch a break.
** [[spoiler:NERV and SEELE both want to cause Third Impact for their own reasons. Losing to the Angels will also cause Third Impact, and side material reveals giving them what they want will result in Third Impact as a byproduct, as Lilith's ultimate goal is to reunite with Adam (AKA all of humanity). By the end of the series, the Children who were supposed to prevent it were so messed up by the Gambit Pileup that they ended up being part of the initiation of Third Impact anyway. In the ''Rebuild'' continuity where they ''aren't'' as messed up, Shinji causes it ''by accident''.]]

** The final arc gives Eren an even worse one: [[spoiler:he's faced with two options, none of which guarantee his people's survival. Option one is to use the Founding Titan's powers to initiate The Rumbling and destroy ''everything'' outside of Paradis, literally trampling over billions of lives in order to ensure his home country's survival (since a lot of the outside world is rightfully scared of the Titans and take out this fear on extreme prejudice towards Eldians). His other option is Zeke's, which sterilizes all Eldians but allows them to live out their full lifespan and yet still risks Eldians being treated like dirt by the world at large. His final solution, taking out ''eighty percent of the population'' and then letting his companions take the credit for stopping a world-ending monster, ''still'' isn't the best solution; while Armin and co. are seen as heroes, Paradis has turned into an ultra-nationalist state, most of the world has turned into a barren wasteland, the remaining members of humanity try to rebuild and are furious at the Eldians, and some untold amount of time later Paradis' ultimate face is getting carpet bombed into oblivion.]]
