* Used in the climax of Film/Life2017 when the alien lifeform does this with David (even though technically it shouldn't need a face) after using its tentacles to raise the visor on his space helmet. [[spoiler:It's to make the audience think the creature is about to kill him. The CruelTwistEnding shows David's lifepod has returned to Earth with David still alive, because the creature has learnt that humans will break containment to rescue each other.]]

A moment in a horror work where one of the characters is confronted by a predatory monster invading their personal space, but does not immediately kill or eat them. Instead, the monster will take a moment to inspect them closely, often with ScaryTeeth on display and/or Phlegmings dripping out of their cavernous mouth. A bellowing MightyRoar may or may not be involved. This is usually depicted with a MediumTwoShot, showing both from the side as the monster slowly enters the frame to make the audience feel cornered as well.

* VideoGame/HalfLifeAlyx has a level where you must navigate an old brewery, full of empty bottles, while the unstoppable but blind monster Jeff roams around, attacking anything that makes a noise. In one particularly harrowing sequence, Jeff wanders into the same cargo elevator you're getting on, and it stands in a corner while you're huddling in the other corner trying very hard not to get heard.

* This happens to at the end of VideoGame/UntilDawn where they distract the wendigo to buy time for the other friends to escape. Should you manage to distract the monster long enough, it will get right in the player character's face and roar before walking away. Should the player fail the quick time event, the monster will kill them.

* Film/Sputnik. The protagonist deliberately does this twice, putting herself in the same cell with the alien. The first time she's lucky to just to get a nasty bite on her foot, the second time the alien doesn't harm her but does kill someone else when a loud noise startles it.
