This is further exasperated by the fact that the (at the time) competing ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' entirely averts this trope. Much of the Franchise/SuperMarioBros franchise counts as this. The main characters are all cartoonish, colorful, and happy, many of the allies and [[AdorableEvilMinions enemies]] are {{Ridiculously Cute Critter}}s, and the music is usually happy and cheerful. Even BigBad SelfDemonstrating/{{Bowser}} can swing between being an IneffectualSympatheticVillain and a [[VileVillainSaccharineShow more menacing]] KnightOfCerebus.

Any time Amy Rose appears in a significant role can dramatically crank up the cute factor, particularly her Sonic Heroes incarnation with her [[HeartBeatDown heart attacks]]. Her theme songs are also incredibly positive and happy, but [[AwesomeMusic still great]]. Suffice it to say for every cute character, there's an equally tough counterpart to keep things upbeat but not quite overly cute.
* Much like its proverbial predecessor, ''VideoGame/FreedomPlanet'' has characters and interactions that can be too saccharine for their own good. The art style takes the already bright colors and cutesy animal designs from the Sonic series and adds even more girly sparkles and flowers with [[SceneryPorn ancient Chinese backdrops]]. Lilac's a GenkiGirl with a lot of spirit, but has many badass qualities to back it up and drops the graceful lady act when she's angry. Carol's a bright green kitty with a motorcycle, but lies more on the badass end of BadassAdorable. And to be fair, the most saccharine moments are tongue-in-cheek, with Carol's reaction to Lilac and Milla's interactions [[AsideGlance piercing the fourth wall]], and these moments balance out [[KnightOfCerebus Brevon's appearances]]. Even so, when he's not around, Milla's large eyes, sweet voice, and innocence can drive most hardened players to crack a "daww" or two. [[spoiler:This just makes his brutal BodyHorror on her even worse]].
* ''VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall'' is practically about cute monkeys playing with magic hamster balls, [[SurpriseDifficulty until you come across a level ]][[ThatOneLevel that will make you tear your hair out.]]

They were originally just small cartoon animals, but now they're saccharine googly-eyed {{Animesque}} chibi horrors (a wee monkey shouldn't have ''jowls'', darn it!). And you should see what they did to the ''Sims''...
* The entirety of ''VideoGame/TwinkleStarSprites'' (a puzzle/shooter/fighting game) is about the same color and sweetness as a pack of Starbursts. Strangely, the game is highly enjoyable nevertheless.
* ''Franchise/{{Kirby}}'' - at least, until its {{vil|eVillainSaccharineShow}}lains bring the MoodWhiplash. ''VideoGame/KirbysEpicYarn'' turned this UpToEleven with the art style and the cutscenes lovingly narrated by someone who sounds like he's reading a bedtime story to an infant, and the fact that its villain was a comparatively-silly yarn wizard with a magic sock [[note]]instead of, [[VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand3 say, an]] EldritchAbomination that [[BloodyMurder attacks using its own blood]] and [[EyeScream rips its own eye out]][[/note]] didn't help matters.

** No [=NPC=] in [=WoW=] is more sickeningly adorable than [[http://www.wowhead.com/npc=39930#comments Mylune]]. All of her quests are about saving critters in Hyjal. She says she can speak deer (It's all in the nose) and if you don't save the little fawns, she'll give you the big eyes (Yes, her eyes grow big and dewy). She's happy when you save the deer because "now they can grow up and have ADVENTURES!" [=P.S.=] She thinks you're swell for saving the critters.
*** The "give you the big eyes" part can also be a hilarious case of DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment when you're a [[KnightInShiningArmor Paladin]] or a [[NatureHero Druid]]; you were going to save the little fawns anyway.

The twist? This is where the SurpriseDifficulty kicks in... and you have to remind yourself that you're still in an EternalEngine run by a MadScientist voiced by Creator/TimCurry.

* ''VideoGame/YoshisStory'' takes place in a cutesy storybook world with baby Yoshis as playable characters making, well, babylike sounds trying to get back the "Super Happy Tree" from Baby Bowser. Unlike the previous ''VideoGame/YoshisIsland'', which was for all ages and featured challenging stages, this game with its saccharine world and low difficulty level was obviously targeted towards little kids.
** Low difficulty, sure. Unless you're trying to get through level 6-3, that damn Ghost castle. And since it's targeted towards little kids, the precision timing and tendency of the ghosts to give chase whenever you weren't staring the bastards in the eye, this level can qualify both as That One Level and Nightmare Fuel.
*** 4-2 could also apply because of the Blurps, right?
** ''VideoGame/YoshisIsland'', while indeed more difficult, is just as adorable. You're a cute dinosaur, and you have to relay a cute baby across a colorful, crayon-drawn, (mostly) happy island environment to another cute dinosaur. Rinse and repeat until the baby is reunited with its missing twin brother.
*** The [[UpdatedRerelease Game Boy Advance port]] added the ''Yoshi's Story'' sounds but made Baby Mario's crying less annoying.
** The soundtracks for every Yoshi game after the first seem to be trying as hard as they can to invoke this trope. Almost every song is quiet, gentle, and sounds like something out of a preschoolers' cartoon. Even the boss themes don't sound particularly threatening.
* The little mole girls in Moleville from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG''. Also from that same game, we have the Mystery Egg. You can buy it from the blue-spotted Toad in Moleville after getting the 5th Star Piece, and it can only be hatched by Peach while she's wearing the B'Tub Ring and using the Egg 10 times. Afterwards, it becomes the Lamb's Lure, in which a cute, chubby, little lamb rolls around, turns an enemy into another lamb, and they fly up into the sky. If you do that 48 times, the Lamb's Lure becomes the Sheep Attack, which summons a bunch of these cute little lambs darting across the screen turning all enemies into even more lambs. If you don't find that cute, then ''get help.''
* In the Babeland level of ''VideoGame/DukeNukem3D'', there's these cartoon mice walking around, saying things like "We're gonna have a wonderful day!" in the most cringe-inducingly cutesy voice imaginable. No wonder that, when you shoot one, Duke says, "Damn, that was annoying."
* ''VideoGame/{{Beatmania}} IIDX 16'': Empress is already cute and happy and ''pink'' from the get-go. Then someone goes and plays [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d0HiykFZQs I'm Screaming LOVE]] and it all goes to hell. Fluffy-bears-swimming-through-candy-carrying-spoons hell.

* ''VideoGame/SnowboardKids'' has you play as SuperDeformed 10-11 year old children, with huge heads and huge noses. The game's levels featured props such as a gigantic snowman with a CatSmile, really short, cute penguins, an amusement park (with a gigantic circus tent used as the skydome), and a beautiful (within N64 hardware constraints) grass-filled valley with rustic brick buildings near the finish line.
** Despite the cutesy exterior, the game's difficulty level was fairly high, and the mechanics, even to this day, are very unique.

Oh whiskers, you had never seen colors so bright and pretty. Dougie knew right away that this was a very special cesspool. And so the happy magic piggies laughed and danced and played until the wee-wee hours of the morning. The end!"
* The ''Franchise/CareBears'' have a reputation for this (it's what "The Dummi Bears," a ShowWithinAShow on ''WesternAnimation/{{Rugrats}}'', was inspired by) - and they ''are'' a group of pastel-colored teddy bears, but the extent of its Tastes Like Diabetes status is more a case of the WeirdAlEffect.
** Though the overbearing cuteness in the first two movies are thankfully eclipsed by the films' ''darker'' undertones which, like any series or movie with a VileVillainSaccharineShow position, pretty much kill off any chance of it being ''completely'' saccharine. Plus, in retrospect, the so-called saccharine scenes in the first two movies and the original TV series are nothing compared to the Care Bears movies and TV series of today, as well as some other kids' franchises, to say the least.

This initially hurt its reception amongst viewers though as many it was too saccharine, but the show has earned itself a decent-sized fanbase over the years.

** His 1950's cartoons with Pussyfoot (''WesternAnimation/FeedTheKitty'', ''Kiss Me Cat'', etc.), however, beautifully avert this. They're adorable, to be sure. But their witty writing and excellent plots keep them from falling into this trope.
* ''WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts'' tend to get this from some audiences. It's both for the fact that they come from the company that makes movies that fall victim to the trope, and being the exact opposite of [[WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes their Warner Bros.]] and [[WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry MGM counterparts]]---cartoon shorts involving ''very'' cartoony-looking animals who rarely engage in slapstick, and with a tone that overall seems extremely kiddish.

* The Land Of Dreams in ''WesternAnimation/TheDreamstone'' is a high octane example, especially with the Noops, Rufus, and Amberley. The place is perpetually cheery and cutesy, and the show's trademark slapstick violence tends to downgrade heavily whenever the town is the main focus, especially during early seasons.
