** Theoretically, a helicopter is supposed to be slowed down by its rotor--even not powered--unless it's jammed, due to the inertia of the blades from spinning so fast. [[AndKnowingIsHalfTheBattle This is called autorotation.]] Practically, it depends on the load and in most cases would be just enough to stabilize it so it will fall rotor upside. Probably this idea appeared because most helicopters make bailing out with an ejection seat or parachute iffy at best, on account of their [[HelicopterBlender large spinning blades]]. Of course, now some military models (like Ka-50) have ejection seats anyway -- if you're going to jettison obstructing parts with explosives, you can add a few charges for blades just as well.

** Theoretically, a helicopter is supposed with engine problems can still use the rotor to be slowed down by slow its rotor--even not powered--unless it's jammed, fall, due to the inertia of the blades from spinning so fast. [[AndKnowingIsHalfTheBattle This is called autorotation.]] Practically, it success depends on the load inside and in most what exactly went wrong. In some cases would be just enough to stabilize it so it this won't slow the helicoper enough, and the passengers will fall rotor upside. Probably this idea appeared because most helicopters still get crushed on impact. The good news is that a pilot can make bailing the attempt on nearly any flat surface, without needing a huge open field like an airplane would.

out of a helicopter with parachutes or an ejection seat or parachute iffy at best, on account seat, because of their the [[HelicopterBlender large spinning blades]]. Of course, now blades on top]]. However some military models (like the Russian Ka-50) have ejection seats anyway -- if you're going to jettison obstructing parts with explosives, you can add a few charges for anyway. An instant before the ejection rocket goes off, an explosive inside the rotor detonates, severing the blades just as well. and getting them out of the way.
