* [[AvertedTrope Averted]] in ''OrderOfTheStick,'' where Eugene [[PetTheDog chooses not to follow a credible lead]] on [[BigBad Xykon]], whom he's sworn to destroy, because doing so would most likely mean abandoning his family and dying at best, and having Xykon hunt them down for revenge at worst. He ''did,'' however, continue to be a [[NeglectfulParent neglectful]] JerkAss to his oldest son, and [[BlatantLies specifically claimed]] [[HiddenHeartOfGold he would have abandoned the family if given a chance]].

* In ''Dinoverse'', the rebellious graffiti artist Janine resents how her mother is often not at home, forcing her to miss school in order to prepare the hotel for guests herself. As it turns out, her mother is keeping Janine from getting in trouble over the graffiti - she never confronted her daughter because she feared Janine would run away.

** Though when he is around/alive, he really does [[DotingParent try to be the best father he can to them]]. Points for effort.

* In ''OnePiece'', Luffy's {{Disappeared Dad}} turns out to be [[spoiler:Dragon the Revolutionary who is known as the Most Wanted Man in the world and [[LaResistance actively schemes to bring down]] the [[TheGovernment World Government]]. It's been hinted that Dragon ''does'' care very deeply for his family and only stays away [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies for their protection]].]]
** Considering what the World Government did on the island where they only ''suspected'' [[spoiler: [[MoralEventHorizon Gol D. Rogers had a wife and child]]]], I say he made a damn good choice.
* In {{Vision of Escaflowne}}, FailureKnight Allen Schezar was ''badly'' traumatised by his sister's kidnapping and his mother's DeathByDespair, and hates his DisappearedDad for leaving the family. [[spoiler: When he ''does'' have [[CallingTheOldManOut a chance to call him out]], Allen finds out that Leon Schezar was ''DeadAllAlong'', having been murdered by TheEmpire because he didn't give them the information he had about the Dragonkin; Mrs. Schezar was depressed to death because she ''knew'' her husband was dead since the beginning. Allen then manages to posthumously forgive his dad, and later in the series he gets his still-alive but ''badly'' fucked up younger sister back. How badly messed up is she? It turns out that she was captured by Emperor Donkirk and turned over to his wizards, tranforming her into the AxeCrazy (and [[GenderBender male]]) Captain of the Dragonslayers; Dilandau.]]

* In {{' 'Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds' '}} Yusei's father [[spoiler: sacrificed his life during the Zero Reverse disaster to ensure that his son would survive.]]

* Goku from DragonBallZ spends most of Gohan's and pretty much all of Goten's childhood's dead, training, or staying dead when he could have been wished back to life because he wanted to keep training.

** Officially, Goku stayed dead because he feared that his enemies would keep coming after him (which makes no sense, considering Trunks' timeline shows that his enemies are still genocidal maniacs even when he's dead); unofficially, it seems probable that Toriyama was trying to shoehorn Gohan into the protagonist role, considering how much PlotInducedStupidity was required for Goku to die and stay dead at that point.

** Much more justified in the manga where he [[spoiler:figured out the BigBad's evil plan and set out to stop him.]] He was also trying to [[spoiler: become mortal again, however.]]

* Played mostly straight in ''CodeGeass'' with Kallen Stadtfeld [[spoiler: and her birth mother, who is actually the incompetent family maid Miss Kouzuki. Kallen assumes her mother stayed on to continue to be her father's mistress, and [[NiceToTheWaiter treats her poorly]]. Cue the [[TearJerker dramatic moment]] when she discovers her mother actually remained out of love for Kallen, but didn't want to give away the fact Kallen is a [[ButNotTooForeign half - "breed"]], and as her mother is jailed, she swears to make Miss Kouzuki her MoralityPet. Thank God, in the GrandFinale we see Miss Kouzuki free and in her path to recovery, living modestly but happily with Kallen.]]

* In ''{{Naruto}}'', Naruto's father [[spoiler:Namikaze Minato, had what he believed was a good reason... Sealing the Kyuubi inside of Naruto to protect Konoha with a XanatosRoulette against Uchiha Madara.]] Turns out that his mom is not only dead, but [[GenerationXerox was the ''previous'' Jinchuuriki of the Nine-Tails.]]
