* The ''PokemonMysteryDungeon'' subseries. Critics tend to give the games meh to middling reviews. Fans, however, ''loved'' them--partially because the stories are actually ''good'' for Pokemon games, and part because it's a unique twist on the franchise. It largely depends on one's tolerance for {{Roguelike}}s.

* 70s progressive rock as a genre has never really gotten much respect from mainstream rock critics, who consider it insufferably pretentious, yet bands like Yes, Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer were hugely popular and still have devoted followings.

** There are exceptions to this, but the genres have to be toned down. For instance, critics are a little bit more accepting of LowFantasy to HighFantasy, Psychological/Supernatural Thrillers to pure Horror, and Hard Sci-fi to Pulp Sci-Fi. To be fair, this also goes for the viewing public as well.

* ''TheLastExorcism'' was well-received by mainstream critics, who gave it a 69% "Fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes. Moviegoers and horror fans, on the other hand, generally skewered it. It got laughed off at the Fantasia Film Festival -- not a good omen for an indie horror flick that was hoping to run on strong word-of-mouth (like how ''ParanormalActivity'' did the prior year) -- and received only a 41% "Rotten" rating from the RT community. This trope was, however, partially subverted by the fact that people generally agreed that ''the first nine-tenths of the movie'' was good -- most of the criticism came from [[GainaxEnding the ending]], which came out of nowhere and completely changed the tone of the movie, and reportedly had entire theaters yelling in anger.

***Interestingly enough the first film in the franchise actually got far better reviews on average from both critics and the core fanbase.
