expand on Doctor Who and give some specific examples

* ''Series/DoctorWho'' traditionally did this with great frequency, although there was an aversion in the last few Tenth Doctor stories. Possibly justified on the grounds that the Doctor gets lonely without a companion, or foresees one leaving, and starts actively looking for a new one. Especially during Creator/StevenMoffat's term as showrunner, there are references to no-companion adventures... which are conveniently off-screen.

* ''Series/DoctorWho'' traditionally did this with great frequency, although there was an aversion ''Series/DoctorWho'': When one of the Doctor's companions departs, he usually finds a new one in the last few Tenth Doctor stories.episode immediately following, if not in the very same episode as the departure. Possibly justified on the grounds that the Doctor gets lonely without a companion, or foresees one leaving, and starts actively looking for a new one. This goes all the way back to the first companion departure, when Susan left at the end of "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS2E2TheDalekInvasionOfEarth The Dalek Invasion of Earth]]" and Vicki turned up in the following episode "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS2E3TheRescue The Rescue]]", while Vicki's own departure in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS3E3TheMythMakers The Myth Makers]]" is an example of a same-episode replacement, with Katarina joining in the same scene that Vicki chooses to leave. The only aversion in the 20th-century run is "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS14E3TheDeadlyAssassin The Deadly Assassin]]", where the Doctor has a single solo adventure on his home planet (which he famously left because there's nobody there he'd want to spend a lot of time with), before picking up a new companion on the next planet he visits. In the 21st-century run, companions usually leave in season finales and new companions usually arrive in season premieres, and if there's a ChristmasEpisode or other special in between the Doctor will invariably find somebody to temporarily fill the companion role. Especially during Creator/StevenMoffat's term as showrunner, there are references to no-companion adventures... which are conveniently off-screen.

** Every game has units that join from the midgame onward that are clearly designed to act as replacements for units from the beginning of the game, sharing their same class and having already unlocked their PrestigeClass (usually referred to as "prepromotes"). While the earlier units are almost always stronger when trained, the prepromotes serve as a fallback in the event that they haven't, whether because they were neglected, [[RandomNumberGod got unlucky with their level ups]], [[{{Permadeath}} or just plain died]]. Even then, prepromotes usually distinguish themselves from their counterparts in the form of [[MageKiller higher Resistance]] (which physical units regularly lack throughout the series), [[WeakButSkilled better weapon ranks]], and simply existing for free [[BoringButPractical without the need for any training or an expensive promotion item]]. Of course, since you control an entire army, [[DownplayedTrope there's nothing stopping you from simply using both units at the same time]].

This is the uncanny habit of a new character arriving conveniently in time to replace an outgoing one, generally in the same episode. Sometimes there is a certain logic to this, as in the case of Starfleet officers being succeeded by another of the same rank. Other times, it's just to make up the numbers, such as in ''Blake's 7'', when the new character is always the same gender as the outgoing one.

* Han Solo, a cocky, brash starship pilot/smuggler, isn't available in a majority of the ''Franchise/StarWars'' the {{midquel}} ''Literature/ShadowsOfTheEmpire'', due to being [[Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack being frozen in carbonite]]. Thankfully, Luke and company encounter Dash Rendar, a cocky, brash starship pilot/smuggler, and enlist his services for the duration of the story.
