A larger maw-mouth eating a smaller maw-mouth does do something, it's just so minor that it's not really referenced until the second-to-last-chapter of the last book.

This isn't generally known even among those who know the closely-guarded secrets of enclave creation because no one had ever actually managed to kill a maw-mouth before El--apparently a smaller one being absorbed by a larger one doesn't count or do anything to the related enclaves--and El is somewhat horrified to realize that the mysterious destruction of enclaves was not due to the first shots in an enclave war but because of her killing them. This is because China's one-child policy at the time meant she couldn't have another child until the current one she was raising started attending the Scholomance and effectively vanished from the face of the earth. Even then, her first four children ended up dying anyway and it wasn't until Liu's uncle that she finally got a child back from the school.

* IntraScholasticRivalry: There's a rough division between the English-speaking and Chinese-speaking students, due to it being possible to take all your classes in just one of those two languages. This is a byproduct of the growing rivalry between the western and eastern enclaves, and the only thing preventing the Scholomance from becoming an AbsurdlyDividedSchool is that there are multiple students who are fluent in both languages so they can use one as their language requirement and have more flexibility in their classes. [[spoiler:This bites El in the ass her senior year, as she's one of those students who ''isn't'' fluent in both English and Chinese, and therefore has had practically no interaction with the Chinese-speaking crowd. Because of that, the Chinese enclavers don't know her at all and make wildly off-base assumptions about her according to what little they do know, eventually coming to the conclusion she's some evil maleficer allied with New York who is trying to take over the student body. This causes them to make multiple attempts to kill her throughout the second book]].

The smarter indie kids come up with long-term strategies to help them survive all four years and graduation, oftentimes blowing their weight allowance for specific supplies that will grant them a huge advantage inside.
