* GirlScoutsAreEvil: Two teenage assassins pose as Girl Scouts selling muffins in order to poison a target.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Dominic Royce is anything but pleasant, but has a point with Mrs Jones knowingly endangering Alex by sending him on a mission, even though Royce himself later endangers Alex's life by cutting off their communications with him. [[spoiler:Turns out that he is not as benevolent as he seems.]]
* OddballInTheSeries: Apart from being consciously styled as DarkerAndEdgier (although less gory) than usual, also the first book in the series to not have a conventional BigBad, the first not to have any gadgets, and the first that is not a self-contained story in its own right, ending on a SequelHook with [[spoiler:Mrs Jones' son and the other Numbers still missing, and Nightshade planning to come after Alex.]]
* VillainBall: When Nightshade [[spoiler:discover who Alex is, they arrange for him to be dumped in Brighton and framed as Julius Grief so the whole country will be looking for him, with the idea being that he will provide a distraction whilst their attack on London is executed. Transporting Alex to just an hour's journey by train from the site of their EvilPlan when he was previously in the wrong country altogether, and leaving him there on his own, is by some margin the stupidest thing any ''Alex Rider'' villain has ever done.]]

Nightshade is a paranormal romance trilogy by Andrea Cremer. It has prequels on the way, two novellas, and a Youtube series from the perspective of Shay Doran before the series begins.

The Keepers, the Guardians, and the Searchers have been warring for as long as anyone can remember, and each has a different story of what actually happened. The Keepers work for the dark forces of the Nether, protected by their shapeshifter slaves—the Guardians—while the Searchers try to bring balance back to the world.

In ''Nightshade'', Calla—a Guardian, who like all Guardians, is a slave of the Keepers—, saves a beautiful human boy in defiance of the Keeper's laws. When she falls in love with him, her impending planned marriage with Ren Laroche, another pack's alpha, begins to look less and less like her destiny and more and more like something she is simply being forced into by her masters. As doubt is thrown on whether the Keepers are really on the right side of the war, Calla is forced to choose between following her heart and following her masters.

In ''Wolfsbane'', Calla and Shay—the human boy, who is also [[spoiler: the chosen one/Scion]]—find themselves captured by the Searchers. Calla is given a simple offer: save her pack and her husband-to-be and bring them into revolt against the Keepers. As Calla fights to save her pack from the gruesome punishments of the Keepers, her continuing attachment to Ren puts a wedge into her relationship with Shay. Now free of her old masters, Calla has the freedom to choose what battles are worth fighting, and what conflicts love can withstand.

In ''Bloodrose'' comes the final battle. As Calla fights to save Ren despite Shay's protests and to protect her brother from the anger of the Searchers, she must prove herself as alpha of her pack in the fight to rid the world of the evil of the Keepers. And then she must decide what to do after the war ends. If she survives.
