The novel begins with the suspicious death of Aroon's mother, at her daughter's hand. While waiting for her servant to call the docter, Aroon reflects on her life and the actions that have lead her to this point. She tells of her emotionally isolated childhood in [[BigFancyHouse Temple Alice]], as she and her brother were raised by a succession of nannies and governesses. Her [[HandsOffParenting disinterested parents]] prefer to devote their time to their various hobbies. As she grows older, Aroon's devotion to the social codes of the time, and especially to the rules of good behaviour, lead her to commit tragic actions.
