* It should be noted that the bugs do use a few kind nicknames for James to counter what his aunts called him. Centipede affectionately refers to him as "kid", Mrs. Ladybug twice called him "dear" or "dearie" and Mr. Grasshopper even once addressed him as "dear boy." All of them are used fondly and are used to gently show James he matters to them.

** Despite making a slightly mean joke about how Miss Spider could possibly eat James when they first meet, Centipede is actually the first one who makes him laugh a short time afterward. And considering how his life with his aunts was like, this was probably the first time James had laughed since his parents died.

* Spiker and Sponge never call James "James" in the entire movie. He's "grub" and "worm" and "insect" and such, to the point where he says in his "I Am" song that he has to remind himself what his own name is - and he dreams of New York being full of people who'll say "James! James! James!" Miss Spider knows his name, and heard the song - and every bug calls him "James" (Mr. Centipede sometimes calls him "Jimmy") over the course of their first scene, as if to make him feel at home. It's small, but whenever the bugs are trying to console him, or he's distressed, they say his name very distinctly and gently. As if to remind him.

* Unlike the cops, who have a reason to believe the paperwork that Aunt Sponge and Spiker present, the ordinary New Yorkers are suspicious of them. They can see that James is cringing in fear. Then a familiar face appears, the old man from the beginning of the movie! He starts a chant that the peach is not theirs and let the boy go. Soon the crowd takes up the same chant.
