* Also the movie doesn't seem to support the idea that the people of Pleasentville are actually happy. Note that Bill talks about how much he looks forward to painting the Christmas display for his store every year before he's had any concept of color. And when his eyes and Betty's meet there's a deep lingering longing look like there's an attraction there well before Betty even has the bath scene. They don't have the words to articulate it but it's really implied they're not actually happy, at best the feel a surface level "pleasentness" but there's a pain lingering a lot down for a lot of them them because they feel unfulfilled.
