And when his eyes and Betty's meet there's a deep lingering longing look like there's an attraction there well before Betty even has the bath scene. They don't have the words to articulate it but it's really implied they're not actually happy, at best the feel a surface level "pleasentness" but there's a pain lingering a lot down for a lot of them them because they feel unfulfilled.
