* [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Sunset_Volley Sunset Volley]] is a Mage Fire spell that deals 10 damage randomly split among all enemies and then summons a random 10-cost minion. Originally 10-cost, it saw no real constructed play, and was then bumped down to 9. Why does it deserve a mention here? Because of [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Chaotic_Tendril Chaotic Tendril]], a 1-mana 1/1 minion from ''Fall of Ulduar'' whose Battlecry casts a random 1-cost spell and then increases the cost of spells cast by the next Tendril, scaling up to 10. After the Year of the Pegasus rotation, Sunset Volley was one of only two 10-cost spells left in Standard (the other being [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Table_Flip Table Flip]]), so dedicated Chaotic Tendril decks focusing on playing and generating them would basically win the game on the spot since their tenth Tendril onwards had a 50% chance to cast Sunset Volley. As such, in addition to making the card marginally more playable, the mana bump makes it so that Chaotic Tendril can no longer cast it more than once per game.

Shamans were burning people to death ''on turn 5'' at some points because of how much mana this card could cheat, thus allowing them to stack a crapton of Spell Damage on the same turn. This card ended up getting Thrall's Gift and Bioluminescence both nerfed due to the degenerate burn combos, and even outside of those decks, it just gave too much value for Shamans to pass up.

* [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Reno,_Lone_Ranger Reno, Lone Ranger]] is the first ever Neutral hero card and, as befitting a depiction of Reno, has an insane Highlander effect: if your deck has no duplicates, he ''removes your opponent's entire board from the game'' (including minions, locations, and even Permanents) and shrinks their board to just 1 space on their next turn. This is quite possibly the strongest Battlecry ever printed on a Hero Card and the strongest board wipe effect in the game, single-handedly obliterating the opponent's board presence and killing their tempo recovery to make up for the tempo loss of spending 8 mana to change your hero. To give you an idea of how strong this is, a lot of non-Highlander decks with decent draw power opted to run Reno as a late-game panic button, and the fact that he's Neutral means any deck that doesn't mind the game going late could potentially bring him out and flip the table on their opponent, thus forcing players to tiptoe around him starting from turn 8 to avoid getting blown out and losing on the spot.

** Midway through April, Battlegrounds Duos was released, and with it came several exclusive minions to encourage working with your teammate. One of them was Orc-ustra Conductor, which [[GoneHorriblyRight certainly succeeded in that]]. It was a Tavern Tier 3 minion who's Battlecry gave a minion +2/+2... and then improves the future Battlecries of the Orc-ustra Conductors both you ''and'' your teammate play for the rest of the game. Using minions and Tavern Spells that allow you to reuse Battlecries can quickly cause the stats you gain to travel into utter insanity, especially if you collaborate with your partner to pass them back and forth using things like Madame Goya's Hero Power or the Tavern Spell Portal in a Bottle. Orc-ustra Conductor ended up getting removed from the game about a week after it was added.

* [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Construct_Quarter Construct Quarter]] is a 3-mana Death Knight Location with 3 Durability from the ''Return to Naxxramas'' mini-set with the ability to destroy a friendly Undead and summon a 4/5 Undead with Rush in its place. Given that Death Knight had plenty of good Undead 1-drops and a Hero Power that generated a 1/1 token that could hit face before being converted, Construct Quarter was almost never dead in hand and provided a truckload of tempo, and being a Location meant you could repeat the effect on later turns without any increase in mana spent. The worst case scenario was when they stuck a [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Foul_Egg Foul Egg]] on board and then Coined this card out on turn 2, resulting in a 4/5 Rush and a 3/3, at which point they pretty much had the board on lockdown for the rest of the game. Construct Quarter was nerfed twice in as many months, first bumping it up to 4 mana and then reducing its Durability to 2, to reduce the obscene value it gives for its cost; both nerfs were reverted when it rotated out.

The problem is that Window Shopper ''didn't'' just come out on her own, because also added with ''Whizbang's Workshop'' was [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Umpire%27s_Grasp Umpire's Grasp]], a 3 mana 3/2 weapon that draws a Demon and discounts it by 2 upon being destroyed. Thus, the strategy becomes having Window Shopper be ''the only Demon in your deck'' to guarantee Grasp pulls her, paired with [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Instrument_Tech Instrument Tech]] to tutor Grasp out just in time to play it. From there, the deck is filled with what can only realistically be described as "filler" cards that help either push advantage or stall -- and we really do mean "filler"; enough people realized that Shopper and Grasp were the only cards that realistically mattered that Highlander decks that ran both as two-ofs began appearing. ''And they actually WORKED''. Worst of all, despite Shopper Demon Hunter being a known problem among the community ahead of the expansion's first balance patch, neither card recieved changes while the deck's strongest opponents (Paladin and Warrior) recieved ''huge'' nerfs, further allowing Demon Hunter to dominate the ladder. It was already quite gross in constructed formats with [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Umpire%27s_Grasp Umpire's Grasp]] routinely drawing it on turn 4 and allowing some very absurd Discovers, but it's especially strong in Arena, partly because you run into less removal and partly because of the different Demon pool, allowing them to pull discounted [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Mythical_Terror Mythical Terrors]] and [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Ancient_Void_Hound Ancient Void Hounds]] along with the occasional 1-mana [[https://hearthstone.wiki.gg/wiki/Magtheridon,_Unreleased Magtheridon, Unreleased]] with the Mini copy. Any of these can wreck an opponent's board so utterly that they might as well just concede as soon as the Discovered Demon hits the board, and even on a fail state it basically generates three additional minions on its own.

** Land Lubber was a Tier 2 3/4 pirate-elemental minion with the simple effect of adding another tavern spell[[labelnote:explanation]]A new mechanic that adds spells to the battleground tavern[[/labelnote]] to your tavern each time you refresh. What was a fairly simple effect ended up being one of the most impactful additions to the battlegrounds: Many Tavern spells have strong synergy with tier 2-3 minions(Bejeweled Duelist, a minion that gains +1 health each time you refresh, for example, has synergy with Leaf Through the Pages, a spell that costs 2 gold and gives you 3 free tavern refreshes. The Glad-iator has divine shield and gains +1 attack each time you cast a spell), meaning the players had ''no reason'' to actually upgrade past tier 2 or 3. In the span of a few turns, players could amass over ''forty'' gold in a consistent fashion and create fat boards that allowed them to at very least hit top 4 without needing anything beyond tier 2-3. The end result was Land Lubber being banned from Battlegrounds only a few weeks after it debuted, and the devs only returned the minion later after it was bumped to tier 3 and several of the aforementioned spells(such as Leaf Through the Pages) were either removed or bumped to a higher tavern tier.

With the recent buff to Blazing Skyfin [[note]]Tier 2 1/3 murloc-dragon minion that gains +1/+1 (+2/+2 if golden) when you trigger a battlecry[[/note]] and the reverted nerf to Young Murk-eye, late-game murlocs suddenly had access to a tool that allowed them to copy golden versions of several murloc staples, meaning all you needed is brann to discover and secure golden copies of whatever murloc you wanted to copy and you were good to go, and thats not even getting into the free discovery of a tier 6 minion you got with each golden murloc you played. Cloning Conch was nerfed about a week after it debuted by changing it to a tier 4 spell but making it so the murloc must be non-golden to be eligible for copy.

Even this didn't stop the spell from being overused in Murloc lobbies due to how strong it was, so it was booted from battlegrounds a few weeks later.
