At first Rob Stewart was simply photographing sharks in Galapagos Islands as an assignment. Then he found out about illegal longlining, and the indiscriminate killing of sharks within the marine reserve. So, to try raise awareness about the situation, he made a movie about sharks that took him four years to make titled ''Sharkwater''.
This documentary starts with Stewart and an assistant in the water with sharks. After that, the focus shifts to saving the ecosystems out there. Stewart travels to 15 countries, which include Papua New Guinea with its coral reefs, Madagascar with its deforested regions, and Canada with its Alberta tar sands. Stewart eventually realizes that everything people do has an effect on the environment, and that environmental degradation, species loss, ocean acidification, pollution, and scarcity of food and water are ruining Earth's ability to support humans.
Stewart travels across the globe and meets with individuals and organizations that are trying to find solutions. His intention is to tell people what is really going on in the hopes that they will motivated to save the environment. He also points out the younger generation has the most stake in this, because this is the generation most likely to be on the receiving end of climate change and environmental collapse.
