* AluminumChristmasTrees: While people have correctly pointed out that there was no sorceress in the original ballad, there errors come in from the fact that the 1850 novel "The Fierce and Filial Girl from Northern Wei" did in fact feature a sorceress amongst the antagonists. True, she is not an entirely accurate portrayal culturally, but even then it is not like a previous retelling has never featured a sorceress or even magic.

* DecompositeCharacter: Captain Li Shang has been split into Commander Tung and Chen Honghui in this version, in contrast to the original animated Disney adaptation. Though, this is noteworthy as an example being doing to a CompositeCharacter, as traditionally Mulan's commander and love interest are two different characters.

* CheatersNeverProsper: During the water-carrying challenge, one trainee tips some of the water from his buckets to make them lighter. This gets found out somehow and he is exiled.

The film had a world premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 9, 2020. It was originally scheduled for wide release in the United States on March 27, 2020, but due to the UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic, it was postponed several times. The film would ultimately be released on September 4 through a premium, experimental Creator/DisneyPlus model while receiving a more traditional theatrical rollout in areas where theaters were open. A month after its Disney+ debut, it also received a release on more traditional VOD platforms.

* CatchAndReturn: Bori Khan catches an arrow fired at him by a Chinese archer and shoots it back at them.

* WarrioVersusSorcerer: Both Mulan and her EvilCounterpart Xian Lang are born with mystical powers. Mulan has super strength, speed and agility, and fights using a sword and martial arts. Xian Lang has VoluntaryShapeshifting and DemonicPossession, and is referred to as a witch. [[spoiler:Xian Lang ultimately pulls a HeelFaceTurn and takes an arrow meant for Mulan]].

* SparedByTheAdaptation: Bori Khan and a large number of Rourans are absent from the majority of the mountain battle and are therefore spared from ensuing avalanche, in stark contrast to the animated film where only Shan Yu and his four elite generals survived.

* TranslationConvention: The Hakkan Chinse dialect and the Rouran language are represented as heavily accented English in the film.

* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Mulan's sister is absoluetly terrified of spiders, and one showing up in the Matchamker session causes Mulan to fail miserably.

* HollywoodTactics: Justified, as the movie clearly takes its stylistics influences from Wuxia. As summed up:

* ArtisticLicneseLinguistics: Being a Rouran, a Proto-Mongol, whose language was an early form of Mongolian, Boi Khan's title should be pronounced as "Haan" rather than "Khaan" due to their being no hard C sound in Mongolian.

* RaceLift: While the film correctly has the invading force as being Rourans, Mulan, her family, comrades and monarchs were all Xianbei. Here, Mulan's family at least, are portrayed as Hakka people.

* HollywoodTactics: As [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E21sJaTTk6Q Shadiversity]] points out, no amount of magic and chi can explain the sheer stupidity of both sides. As summed up:

** Keeping with the film being a remake of a previous adaptation, Mulan's father is named Zhou rather than Hu, coming from the previously mentioned play just as Hua, Leopard Skin and Xin Ping do.

** Mulan and her family live in a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulou tulou]], ostensibly indicating that they belong to the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakka_people Hakka people]] from southern China, while the Mulan from the legends originated from northern China, near the Yellow River.
** The invaders in the 1998 film were Huns, which the Chinese dub rendered as [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiongnu Xiongnu]]. Here, the invaders are identified as the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouran_Khaganate Rourans,]] which the film has in common with a [[Film/MulanRiseOfAWarrior live-action version]] from 2009.

* AdaptationNameChange: Mulan's family name is now "Hua" instead of "Fa", which is actually the same name, but using the Cantonese pronuciation instead of Mandarin[[note]]although ''Hua'' is an acceptable substitute in modern Mandarin and is used interchangeably in context[[/note]]. Also, her alias is no longer "Fa Ping"[[note]]thus averting comparisons to [[AccidentalInnuendo certain internet slang]] that arose after the animated movie[[/note]] but rather "Hua Jun".

* BrokenAesop: While Mulan in the animated film and the original ballad has to struggle and work hard to prove herself, this version has a natural talent thanks to her chi and is immediately a master in everything and even if the movie says that those same traits would be praised in a man, whereas they are scorned in women like Mulan and Xian Lang, an attitude that is justly presented as a bad thing, the only woman in which are scorned is the witch, and it happens for reasonable reasons since she uses her powers for evil purpouses.

** Bori Khan is especially notable given that nomadic peoples were much more equal in regards to gender, and Shan Yu in the original film was completely unphased when he learned Mulan's real gender, even seeing her as a WorthyOpponent. Khan's misogyny is unusual to his culture.

** The Rouran army uses trebuchets, ''a siege weapon'' to hit infantry.

** When Mulan distracts the Rourans with a false infantry unit, the Rourans decide to ''fire their trebuchet'' after supposedly picking off the enemy with archers instead of sending their own men. This results in the avalanche and their defeat on the field.
