mis-use: This is a trivia trope not a story trope intended to point out technology used in the work that was "state of the art" at the time the work was created but is now hopelessly dated and "taking up space in your basement". It's not about technology within the series itself that evolves over time, otherwise every Star Trek series can dedicate paragraphs lovingly explaining how this show's Enterprise is more advanced than the one from the previous show. In this case, it's expected that each Iron Man movie will show a more advanced suit than the previous installment.

* TechnologyMarchesOn: In-universe with the Iron Man suit. In the first film, Stark isn't the most graceful flyer, and assumes an awkward looking pose before liftoff to maximize thrust. In ''Iron Man 2'', when Rhodey "steals" the Mark 2 suit, he assumes the same awkward stance and his flight is noticeably less agile than Stark's Mark 5 and later Mark 6 suit. In ''The Avengers'', Stark is incredible agile, fast, and confident while flying, even to the point of making his malfunctions look good. The weapons also progress similarly: he introduces the wrist-mounted laser in the Mark 6 suit, but it can only be used once before burning out, while the Mark 7 suit has reusable and functionally more powerful lasers (that also draw more power). By the time ''Iron Man 3'' rolls around, Tony had over forty different Iron Man suits, each with specific purposes and unique capabilities. The Mark 42 is one that [[spoiler:he can pilot with just a head-piece interface, while doing other things -- like working out. He also appears to have upgraded J.A.R.V.I.S. to the point that the AI can pilot multiple suits without Tony's help, though they are not as effective as when Tony is in direct control.]] Stark then takes it UpToEleven with his Hulkbuster armor in ''Age of Ultron,'' which is deployed from orbit and includes lots of replacement parts to account for Hulk tearing bits off.

mis-use: The trope is about how Hollywood has a preset collection of things that ALL Nerds like or do without exception. For example, we all like X-Men, D&D, Star Trek, Star Wars, and can quote every line of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". The Gwyneth Paltrow example may be accurate with regards to nerd awareness of Paltrow's career but it doesn't fit the trope definition.

* GeekReferencePool: Real life example. Certain nerds only know Gwyneth Paltrow from these movies, even though she's been around since the early 90's and won a friggin' '''Oscar''' for ''Film/ShakespeareInLove''. Somewhat justified in that while working to raise small children she deliberately did not act much, and ''Iron Man'' was one of the first roles she took when she started acting again.

Larger calibers (up to an including 20mm Vulcan rounds and the main cannon of a tank!) score and dent the armor, showing off the creators' CG muscle and occasionally causing problems ranging from a frozen knee joint to trouble removing the suit without a diamond blade.

* ThouShallNotKill: Notably {{Averted}} in all three films. Within minutes (screentime) of Tony perfecting the Mark III, he takes out a small battalion of terrorists, including a manned tank, who were attacking civilians. He doesn't even TRY to use nonlethal force, and the experience doesn't seem to phase him later. Throughout the rest of the films, he has no moral dilemmas about killing the villains if there's no better/easier choice. Rhodes also guns down numerous villains for his own part.

** Tony, to ridiculous extremes. Forget the private jet that turns into a nightclub with flight attendants who double as exotic dancers. He has the personal resources and completely automated production facility to build a fully functional Iron Man suit (Mark III) in five hours... ''in his garage.'' Justified as he had already built a suit (Mark II), and the blueprints were on the private server. The only differences between the new Mark II and the red and gold Mark III appear to be the alloys used to combat the icing problem, and the usage of colors.
