Unfortunately for Flicker, Curly got away and tells the mob that Flicker betrayed them. Finding it advisable to get out of town, Flicker heads to San Francisco. There he meets an ex-hooker, Rose (Creator/JoanBlondell), who is headed to the small coastal town of Santa Avila to marry a hard-working fisherman named Nick (Victor Jory). Looking for an out-of-the-way place to lay low, and having taken an immediate fancy to the lovely Rose, Flicker goes with her. What Flicker doesn't know is that a hoodlum named Pop Sims has heard of Flicker's presence in San Francisco, and has tracked him to Santa Avila.

''He Was Her Man'' is a 1934 film directed by Lloyd Bacon.

Flicker Hayes (Creator/JamesCagney) is a safecracker, recently released from prison, who is recruited by his friends Curly and Deering to pull another job. However, Flicker blames them for apparently causing him to take the rap on the previous job and go to prison in the first place. So instead of going with them on the robbery, he alerts the cops. The cops catch Curly and Deering in the act, Deering shoots a cop, and, eventually, Deering is executed.

!!Tropes:

* TheBadGuyWins: The mobsters succeed in tracking down Flicker, hauling him out of Santa Avila at gunpoint, and murdering him. Very soon after this film was released such endings would no longer be allowed, with the imposition of UsefulNotes/TheHaysCode.
* BettyAndVeronica: Rose is torn between Nick (nurturing, supportive, accepting) and Flicker (dangerous, exciting). She's grateful to Nick but her sexual attraction to Flicker is obvious.
* BittersweetEnding: Rose gets married to Nick and presumably lives a happy life, but Flicker is killed by the gangsters.
* ConscienceMakesYouGoBack: Conscience and love. Flicker is boarding the bus out of town, having figured out that the gangsters have found him, when he stops. Instead he goes back and saves Rose at the cost of his own life.
* EiffelTowerEffect: A shot of the Brooklyn Bridge establishes the opening scenes as being in New York City. A shot of Coit Tower and Angel Island fixes the next part of the film as being in San Francisco.
* LoveTriangle: Rose is torn between Flicker, the dangerous gangster she's attracted to, and Nick, the good-hearted fisherman who offers her a safe home and a happy life.
* MeetCute: Flicker and Rose meet when she sneaks into her room, which the day before was hers, to retrieve her wedding dress.
* {{Safecracking}}: Averted. Flicker is hired to do this but he double-crosses his hoodlum partners. (They were going to double-cross him, of course.)
* SleepingDummy: Pop Sims puts pillows under his blanket and makes an early exit to contact the mobsters.
* VideoCredits: Video credits of all the main players at the start of the movie, as was Warner Brothers house style during that era.
