* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: Natasha and Yelena in the comics were never trained together in the comics, as Natasha is several ''decades'' older than Yelena; Yelena was intended to be Natasha's SuperiorSuccessor, but ended up just becoming her more villainous knock-off. Here, they're depicted as surrogate sisters and (apparently) allies.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Taskmaster is billed as the one who's responsible for the Red Room, when in the comics he had nothing to do with it. The fact the Red Room brainwashes and abuses young children to turn into elite agents would be something he'd have no part in, since of his few moral boundaries he does not support hurting kids.

* AmazonBrigade: According to the final trailer, the Red Room has produced a small army of brainwashed Black Widow agents, now under the control of Taskmaster. Unlike Natasha who is primarily a spy, they are more shown to be an elite fighting squad that operates in concert with guns blazing.
* AndStarring: With Creator/WilliamHurt, with Creator/RayWinstone, and Creator/RachelWeisz.

* CaptainPatriotic: Red Guardian, who in the teaser, much like in the comics, wears a costume similar to Captain America adorned in the colors and iconography of Russia instead.
* CasualDangerDialog: Between Yelena and Natasha in the final trailer, while they’re being chased by Taskmaster.

* DigitalDeAging: One scene showcased in the trailer shows Thaddeus Ross appear significantly younger than he did in ''Film/TheIncredibleHulk'', accomplished thanks to this technique.
* FormerlyFit: In the teaser, Melina ribs Alexei about the fact he's put on some weight over the years Natasha has been gone.
%%* {{Flashback}}: Several are featured, one of which showcases an encounter between Natasha and Thaddeus Ross years before the events of ''Film/TheIncredibleHulk''.
* FearfulSymmetry: The teaser showcases Yelena's skill as a spy by making Natasha and her behaving the same during a fight. Both come out of a corner at the same time, guns pointing toward each other, then ensues a scene where both women basically use the same moves until Yelena grabs a knife.
* FreefallFight: The teaser trailer briefly shows an action scene during which Natasha has to jump from a really high place, navigate through falling debris midair, while being pursued by mercenaries. The final trailer reveals Taskmaster himself is involved, tackling Natasha in midair.
* FugitiveArc: The film is set between ''Civil War'' and ''Infinity War'', where Natasha and the other Secret Avengers became fugitives for opposing the United Nation's SuperRegistrationAct. Similarly, the teaser shows Natasha retrieving fake ids and looking for tails as she travels by train.
* {{Interquel}}: As shown and discussed in the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 reveal, the film takes place after ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'', but also before the earlier released ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'' and ''Film/AvengersEndgame''. Similarly, the teaser shows Natasha sporting her ''Civil War'' era long red colored hairstyle, as opposed to the bleached and partially bleached blonde hairstyles she sported by ''Infinity War'' and ''Endgame''.
* MagicalSecurityCamera: The final trailer shows Taskmaster watching footage of Natasha's hallway scene from ''Film/IronMan2'', specifically footage from the film itself rather than the security cameras that Whiplash was watching (which were shown to record in black-and-white).
* MexicanStandoff: The trailer shows Natasha and Yelena holding each other at gunpoint before eventually duking it out.
* MoreThanMindControl: Yelena describes how the Black Widow operatives are controlled in such terms: "manipulated, fully conscious, but no choices".
* NoEscapeButDown: At the end of the teaser, Natasha jumps off a cliff as debris from the installation she was just on fall through the air and Taskmaster's mooks fire their machine guns at her.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Natasha is on the receiving end of one in the trailer.
* ProtagonistTitle: The film is Natasha's solo outing, although both Yelena and Melina are ''also'' Black Widows.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: The ColorMotif of the Black Widows, a sinister all-female group of super-spies under the control of Taskmaster for nefarious purposes. Several times in the final trailer, they are shown in [[DarkIsEvil black suits]] with red lighting coming from the environment.
* ReimaginingTheArtifact: Red Guardian, in the comics, was imagined as "the USSR's Captain America", a concept that wouldn't quite translate well with the MCU being set years after the Cold War ended. Based on what's shown in the trailer, the film approaches the character as a RetiredBadass who let himself go a bit after the fall of the Soviet Union.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: Along with her taking the protagonist role, Natasha is shown switching from her black costume of previous films to a white one in the teaser.
* ShownTheirWork: The teaser reveals that Alexei has prison tattoos, which are common for Russian convicts -- and the symbols used are accurate to what Russian prisoners often use. For instance, the eyes are meant to intimidate other convicts, while the towers and the star indicate that Alexei has a history of stealing.
* SpyFiction: The teaser has former Russian spy Natasha discussing returning home to confront her past, while also showing scenes of her on the run using assumed identities, and encountering various other black ops agents who want to help (like Yelena, Alexei and Melina) or hinder (like Taskmaster) her along the way.
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: In the teaser trailer and again in the final trailer, Taskmaster is shown brandishing a high-tech bow and arrow from the roof of an armored vehicle.
