!!''Motion Sickness'' contains the following tropes:
* {{BFS}}: After reforging his sword, Jaune's blade gains considerable additional length in it's Broadsword mode when combined with its shield similar to Cloud's buster sword.
* TheDon: ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'''s Don Corneo makes a very brief appearance in a very similar role when certain events require taking him on in Mistral.
** in addition, Blake is on the receiving end of one by her parents when she returns to Menagerie.
* FakeMemories: Let's just say that the whole imprinting of Cloud's character traits onto Jaune isn't just limited to his appearance, abilities, and weapons.
* LimitBreak: The core premise of the fic really for the first major section of the story is the slow buildup to figuring out the exact nature of Jaune's semblance. Naturally once they figure it out more, they grant it the titular trope namer.
* MadScientist: As backstory elements are revealed and during one particularly noteworthy interlude, elements of this become slowly more apparent. [[spoiler: Turns out Merlot may not have been limiting himself to just Grimm, taking a few pages out of Hojo's book ]].
* TheMole: As things finally come to a head after numerous hints getting dropped along the way that become way more obvious in hindsight, it turns out [[spoiler: Jaune's backstory hasn't just be reworked with elements from Cloud, but Sephiroth as well. Once he comes into contact with the transmission Grimm he speaks for the first time in a long time with his 'Mother', as she commands him to fulfill his original purpose. ]]
* MoodWhiplash: Several examples of these throughout the story with budding romance scenes followed up almost immediately by something horrible happening. [[spoiler: Like not too long after the 'Gold Saucer' date and revealing to the whole team about their romance, Jaune get's activated by Salem and is forced to kill Ren and Nora during the events of the end of Haven. ]]
* NeverFoundTheBody: Sort of invoked after Haven. [[spoiler: Though the bodies of Ren and Nora, as well as Leonardo are found in the hidden room, they could not find Jaune's body, which implied many bad things about what actually happened there. ]]
* PowerGlows: Jaune's semblance first activates a simple glow around his body that he doesn't understand. Takes elements largely from Cloud's mechanics in Smash at first before slowly invoking additional features more familiar to Final Fantasy games.
* WhamEpisode: Chapter 33 in spades as the Haven conclusion finally comes to a head. [[spoiler: After a long drawn out fight between several of the key players, Jaune pursues Leonardo into the hidden room with the Communication Grimm, where he finally comes in contact with his Mother. She immediately has Leonardo killed, and orders Jaune to take the Relic to her and kill Ren and Nora, with him powerless to resist her. ]]
