* FlawedPrototype: Salem's initial batch of rideable Grimm is meticulously conditioned to follow the Skrall's commands--an achievement that impresses Tuma, even if he won't admit it. However, when Tuma orders the Grimm to fight him, he swiftly dispatches it, revealing its flaws. The creature's sluggishness and excessive armor-plating on the rear make it vulnerable to attacks from the front. In response, Tuma advises Salem to enhance the next batch by increasing speed and reinforcing the front armor, while allowing the rider to protect the rear.

* BothSidesHaveAPoint: When Theodore introduces his daughter as the Summer Maiden, and everyone discovers she has never had her Aura unlocked nor taught how to fight, Winter and Theodore get into an argument about it. Theodore argues that Petra is a child and shouldn't allowed into battle, while Winter tells Theodore that the fact that Petra is a Maiden means she will be targeted by the enemy. Jaune creates a compromise so that Winter will teach Petra how to use her powers in the event she needs to defend herself, but they won't send her out into battle.

* FellOffTheBackOfATruck: Berix claims that this his how he got his seemingly-endless supply of macarons - from a crate that fell off a caravan vehicle, and he simply couldn't let all that food go to waste. Emerald isn't convinced, but doesn't press the issue.
* FigureItOutYourself: Emerald notes that Salem always took this approach with Cinder in regards to her Maiden powers, just telling her what to do and expecting her to figure out ''how'' herself.
* FlawedPrototype: Salem's first batch of the rideable Grimm are conditioned to obey the commands of the Skrall, something that impresses Tuma even if he won't admit it. However, when Tuma commands it to fight him and he easily kills it, he demonstrates that the Grimm is too small and cumbersome and it has too much armor-plating on the back and not enough on the front, exposing weak points that the enemy can hit. Tuma instructs Salem to make the next batch faster and put armor-plating on the front while letting the rider defend the rear.

New chapter!

Added DiffLines:

* CruelMercy: After fending off the not yet Piraka's attack, the Dark Hunters are tossed through a portal back to Odina for the Shadowed One to deal with since anything the Order can do will be a ''mercy'' compared to what their boss will do to them, and to send a message from Axonn that the Dark Hunters come after him, Brutaka, or Penny again, they'll kill him and his followers.

Added DiffLines:

* HadToBeSharp: Axonn's mental monologue makes it clear that the Skakdi's native home of Zakaz is so awful that "hellish" is charitable at best, and so their strength, pain tolerance, and stamina are all part of what allowed them to survive there before the Makuta "uplifted" them.

Added DiffLines:

Added example(s) Body Horror

* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:Vezon's]] "birth" in Chapter 18 is much more grotesque and intensive here than it was in canon, as the prose describes him trying to literally ''tear himself free'' from [[spoiler:Vezok.]] For all that they hate each other, even [[spoiler:the other Skakdi]] can't look away from the process.

* BookEnds: A minor example in Chapter 14, "Legacy of the Schnees." It begins with Whitley having a verbal (and almost physical) altercation with a Vacuan Huntsman, and ends with Whitley [[spoiler:personally delivering a crate of Dustfruits]] to that same Huntsman.

* GoodOldFisticuffs:
** Much like in canon, this is Yang's preferred fighting style, complete with [[MixAndMatchWeapon shotgun gauntlets.]] Once he acquires the Mask of Strength (and after a little bit of coaching), Tahu comes to adopt this against enemies that resist fire.
** Onua is no slouch in this department either, if his fight against [[spoiler:an Infected Lewa]] is anything to go by, though he seems to prefer clever thinking and elemental powers over a full-on slugfest.
** Headmaster Theodore was implied to be a boxer in ''Before The Dawn,'' but he's a full-on BoxingBattler when we see him fight in ''Dutiful Destruction''. It helps that he apparently has a Semblance that lets him regenerate lost Aura by attacking, which encourages him to keep slugging it out no matter how tired he gets.

Takua in particular finds Penny's toes ''extremely'' repulsive, comparing them to worms stuck to her feet, among other things. In fact, part of the reason Makuta decides against trying to expose the Huntresses to Energized Protodermis in their fight is not wanting to see if it would make them look even ''worse''.

Penny manages to get her to give them the parts by throwing in a few inches of her hair, telling Roodaka the truth of its origins in a somewhat dramatic fashion, but ''not'' that it grows back, conning her (and getting Axonn to smile in the process). Added DiffLines:

* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: Tuma's opinion of Salem's plans, and why he has no trouble allying with her despite her goal of destroying Remnant so she can die. Either the methods that Ozpin has been using against her since the dawn of Remnantian history hold up and the heroes are able to keep her from getting the Relics, or, if Salem ''does'' get the other two Relics, and causes Remnant to unite against her to stop her from destroying the world... thus fulfilling the conditions of the God of Light, so even if she does summon the gods they'll ''spare'' instead of destroying them.

Added DiffLines:

* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Aside from the Skirmishers for the Skrall to ride, all of the new Grimm types Salem debuts in Chapter 16 have names tied to Norse mythology. The Valkyries are feline/bird creatures that provide aerial support, the Nidhogg are giant serpents with insect wings and sharp talons, and the Svalinn are mobile fortresses and transports.

Added DiffLines:

* SpannerInTheWorks: As Mercury points out, the new Dustfruit plants will allow Vacuo to greatly alleviate the strain on their resources, reducing the stress that drew Grimm to the city and allowing the defenders to take greater measures against the Grimm without needing to worry about conserving Dust ammunition so much. Strontius points out that they still steal some seeds and use the Dustfruits themselves, but it's still more of an advantage for the heroes, especially in the short term.

Added DiffLines:

* VictoryByEndurance: Tuma is a great warrior, but since Salem is immortal, she can outlast his attempts to fight her in a spar. Tuma later deconstructs this, pointing out that blasting her foes with magic and using her immortality to work them into exhaustion is basically her ''entire'' fighting style, making her overconfident and reckless.
