* ArtEvolution: While reflecting the same evolution as in the manga, DBZ has a larger variety of animators and is thus changes quite a bit over the course of the series. At the start it was very similar to the more playful line work of Dragonball with more rounded features. By the Frieza Saga it started including a lot more angular lines, muscles that look like they were chiseled out of rock, rock and blood compared to series start.more blood. This is best seen with Vegeta, who initially came across a lot more shrimpy in stature and his AnimeHair is almost a third his total height, but by the Cell Saga he was only slightly shorter than Goku and a much leaner musculature.

Trunks complies and punches Mr. Satan "lightly", but still wound up sending him flying and crashing into a wall.

** Vegeta's second death after selling his soul to Babidi for power and to return to his old evil self. Despite him mercilessly killing hundreds of people and being the one who allowed Buu to be freed by fighting Goku, his HeroicSacrifice to stop Buu is one of the saddest moments in the series. Made extra heart-wrenching since Vegeta knows he's going to Hell for all his past bad deeds and still blows himself up willingly to save his family.

Even Piccolo and Krillin, both of whom spent the majority of the series hating Vegeta's guts and therefore would've felt he deserved to die, are mournful when he sacrifices his life to destroy Buu, with Krillin literally screaming his name.

** Saiyans, despite claiming to be a warrior race, are essentially just sadistic bullies whose idea of a "strong opponent" is someone who's just strong enough to not be immediately battleed by them, but not strong enough to be an actual threat. Goku is an anomaly among Saiyans for preferring to fight people who can actually defeat him.
** Captain Ginyu, during his fight with Goku, actually yells at Jeice for assisting him, stating that he doesn't need his help, implying that Ginyu has a sense of honor despite being evil. When he realizes that Goku is IAmNotLeftHanded holding back, he lets Goku power up in order to get a better fight out of him. When Goku reveals just how powerful he really is, Ginyu has a minor FreakOut and decides to play dirty by stealing Goku's stronger body for himself, showing that Ginyu's "honor" is disposable if it's inconvenient.
** After achieving his perfect form, Cell organizes the Cell Games in hopes of fighting a opponent worthy of his newfound strength, and even gives his enemies a week to prepare for the fight. He maintains a seemingly AffablyEvil facade and a show of good sportsmanship in the lead-up to the tournament and during his fight with Goku, but when Super Saiyan 2 Gohan turns out to be vastly stronger than him, he proves to be a SoreLoser and tries to blow himself up and take the whole planet with him.
** Super Buu is a BloodKnight who didn't destroy the Earth immediately because he remembers Goku's promise of a challenging opponent for him to fight. He also admits that the (initial) reason he didn't absorb Gohan alongside Gotenks and Piccolo is because he wanted a strong opponent to test his new power on. Of course, it's clear that Super Buu's idea of a WorthyOpponent is someone who doesn't die in a couple of hits, and he actually despises the idea of anyone being his equal in strength or being stronger than him. When he's first outmatched by Gohan, he undergoes a VillainousBreakdown and deliberately self-destructs (knowing he can reconstitute his body) so he can wait one hour before putting his plan to absorb Gotenks and Piccolo in motion. When Vegito starts to get the upper hand on him, Super Buu grows increasingly angry and desperate to win, which allows Vegito to put his own plan into motion by letting Buu absorb him so he can rescue all of the absorbed victims trapped inside Super Buu's body.

* ForWantOfANail: The main timeline is very different compared to Trunks' timeline, for no discernible reason other than later on in his timeline, Cell went into the past, creating the main timeline where he's already there; even though Cell apparently took no steps to actively change anything (in fact, being in a cocoon the whole time), there are several differences, though Kami briefly theorizes this may because time travel just messes with reality in general rather than needing anyone to change anything. Such changes include:
** Androids #17 and #18 being inexplicably more powerful but nowhere near as evil.Apparently, the versions Trunks was expecting killed Gero before he could tune up their perpetual generators and tune down their personalities to make them more controllable.
** Dr. Gero turning himself into an cyborg and making #19.
** #18 deciding to wake up #16, meaning there are now 3 androids (not counting Gero and #19)
** Events happening earlier or later than they're supposed to, like Goku getting sick with his heart disease much later than Trunks expected. In this specific instance, the stress of teleporting to Earth to fight Mecha-Frieza and King Cold caused Future Goku's heart disease to develop faster; in the main timeline, he sensed that Trunks was taking care of it and waited for his space pod to arrive, meaning he didn't get stressed until the Androids showed up.
** And, of course, Cell being there in the first place, which causes widespread carnage and such.

** Gotenks is a deconstruction bordering on parody for various shonen tropes. He calls mundane attacks which do nothing to his opponent, and generally goofs around (when his very existence is on a timer, no less) because he thinks it will be a better show if he makes it seem like he's losing before getting a HeroicSecondWind to defeat Super Buu. The latter results in Piccolo destroying the entrace to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with them inside, this being the back-up plan to make sure Earth is safe from Buu.

In the anime, Piccolo's strategy combined with teamwork from Yamcha and Tien have it that they perform better' than Trunks and Vegeta as they successfully saved Goku from the Cell Juniors and got more clean hits in. In fact, Piccolo was shown to be the most competent out of the Z-Fighters (excluding Gohan) during the fight against the Cell Juniors.

** The Kaiju Great Ape transformations make Saiyans ten times more powerful, but their minds are reduced to that of wild beasts. However, as shown with Vegeta, it's possible to remove the weakness with training.
** The Super Saiyan Grade 3 transformation increases the user's strength in exchange for a downgrade in speed. The drawback is so great, that the form is considered AwesomeButImpractical.

** During the fight with Raditz, Piccolo needs Goku to buy him five minutes to charge up his Special Beam Cannon. He later perfects the move to remove the charging time, although it does appear weaker since the Special Beam Cannon was able to drop an enemy who over three time stronger than Piccolo, but such a feat is never seen again in Z.
** The Spirit Bomb. Considering it takes a long time to gather enough energy to use and that Goku is left defenseless while doing so, it is difficult to use in live combat. Usually, live bait is used to help him. It's used three different times and on each occasion, a weaker ally has to HoldTheLine long enough for Goku to form the attack.
** The third stage of the original Super Saiyan formalso known as "Ultra Super Saiyan" or "Super Saiyan Grade III", gives a huge boost in power, supposedly as much as a Super Saiyan 2. Unfortunately all the muscles that come with it drastically decrease speed, making it practically impossible to actually hit your opponent. Goku and Vegeta both realized that the second form was useless due to the loss of speed, and Cell calls out Trunks for using such a foolish technique.
** This becomes an IronicEcho when Cell bulks up massively in his fight with [=SSJ2=] Gohan. To top it all off, Trunks lampshades this as Gohan is dodging everything Cell throws at him, remarking that Cell could probably put the hurt on Gohan if he ever managed to hit him.
** The Super Saiyan 3 form can also be regarded as this, as it increases the user's power by 400x, but the immense energy drain it comes with makes it impossible to sustain for long.
*** When Gotenks used the form, the energy drain caused his Fusion to end early. He should have had a full thirty minutes to defeat Super Buu, but instead his Fusion ended and Goten and Trunks were kicked back out after only five.
*** When Goku attempts to use the form against Kid Buu, Vegeta accuses him of sandbagging but Goku reveals that he's legitimately trying to defeat Buu. However, Buu's hyper-offensive fighting style is preventing him from powering up to his full strength. In the Japanese anime and the dub, Goku tells Vegeta that he's holding back against Kid Buu. In the dub, he's holding back so Vegeta can have a turn and drags the fight on too long to the point that he needs time to charge to full power. In the Japanese version, Goku is trying to look cool, which is why he doesn't use his full power from the start. Vegeta fights Buu for him so that Goku can have time to power up, but the energy drain counteracts Goku's efforts to draw ki. Instead of reaching full power, Goku's ki completely empties and he's kicked out of the form entirely.

* DeducingTheSecretIdentity: Videl deduces the identity of the mysterious new superhero Great Saiyaman fairly easily (only needing a single chapter of the manga to do so while the anime stretches it out via filler).
** In the manga, she was already suspicious of Son Gohan due to his unusual physical abilities (such as taking a fastball to the face without blinking, and jumping several meters into the air). What clinches it is how when they first meet, she recognises Gohan's voice and he addresses her by name despite it being the first time she and Great Saiyaman have met. She also casually asks him how he managed to get out of class (she has special permission to leave and help with situations), and he just as casually replies that he lied and said he needed to go to the toilet.
** In the anime, the sequence where she tricks him into revealing his identity is omitted, and all the other stuff simply makes her suspicious. Instead, she identifies him thanks to a RevealingInjury: a small cut on Gohan's cheek that just happens to be where Great Saiyaman was scratched during a fight with attacking dinosaurs.

** An infamous example in the Ocean dub of the Sayian Saga; Vegeta simply explaining how Sayains turn into giant monkeys was changed to Vegeta explaining how Goku's "brilliant scientist" father invented the method to transform Sayains without a full moon, a bit of lore which the translation team completely made up and contradicts all other versions of Goku's dad.
** Likewise, Goku's realization that he was the giant monster who killed his beloved grandfather was changed to Goku realizing that Vegeta killed him -- which not only makes no sense, it also makes Goku look deluded and in denial over what really happened.
** The Funimation dub of Z was made before they started translating the original Dragon Ball. As such, there's some glaring inconsistencies when they get to the Android Arc. According to Funi, Goku actually fought Doctor Gero (whom they confuse with Commander Red, who Goku never met), before the mad scientist escaped, when in reality Goku had never heard him of before. Also, Tao -- a mercenary hired by the Red Ribbion army to take out Goku -- is mistaken as the true leader of the Red Ribbon army, who Goku defeats with his Kamehameha.
