It originally started out as Creator/MetroGoldwynMayer's studio lot back in the 30s, though the complex itself dates back to 1915; many of Hollywood's classic films were made here. But after UsefulNotes/TedTurner's failed purchase of MGM in 1986, he sold it to Creator/{{Lorimar}}-Telepictures, as part of their effort to expand beyond television and into movies. This didn't work very well, and L-T was acquired by Creator/WarnerBros in 1989. Once that happened, they sold the lot to Creator/ColumbiaPictures, which had been renting half of Warner's lot since the early 70s. Hence, it was quickly rebranded ''Columbia Studios'', until 1992, when it received its present-day name (Creator/SonyPictures itself having been formed the previous year).
