His first big break came with a large role in ''Porridge'' as "Bunny" Warren, a prisoner who was high-spirited, even if he was unable to read. In '''Allo 'Allo!'', he played Captain Hans Geering for the first three series before leaving at the start of the fourth. He returned for a guest role in Series 7 and in later years admitted that leaving the show when he did was his greatest regret.

At the start of TheNineties, he starred in ''On the Up'' alongside Dennis Waterman and Creator/JoanSims, while at the end of the decade, he starred opposite Gwen Taylor as her husband in ''Series/{{Barbara}}''.
