Rowlands began her career in the chorus of ''Theatre/AnnieGetYourGun'', followed by a summer season in Torquay. She then spent several years with the Players' Theatre in London, before making her West End debut in ''Valmouth''. She made her debut in the ''Carry On'' films in ''Film/CarryOnAgainDoctor'' in 1969 and soon became a regular cast member usually playing dowdy, put-upon wives or long-suffering secretaries. She appeared in nine of the films with her most substantial roles being Hortense Withering in ''Film/CarryOnAtYourConvenience'', Mildred Bumble in ''Film/CarryOnGirls'' and Linda Upmore in ''Film/CarryOnBehind''.
