After training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and was a member of the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic from 1971 to 1973 and of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1973.

Early in her TV career, she had small roles in ''The Lovers'', ''[[Series/DoctorInTheHouse Doctor at Large]]'', and ''The Evacuees'', before starring in ''Agony'' as Jane Lucas and ''All at No 20'' as Sheila Haddon.

After playing Lillian Spencer in six 2002 episodes of ''Series/CoronationStreet'', she returned to the series in 2018 as Evelyn Plummer.
