His first TV appearance was in an episode of ''Series/{{Crossroads}}'' in 1974, although his first speaking role was in an episode of ''Series/DixonOfDockGreen'' later that same year. As TheSeventies continue, Holland made several guest appearances in David Croft sitcoms such as ''Series/ItAintHalfHotMum'', ''Series/AreYouBeingServed'' and ''Series/DadsArmy''. This led to Croft casting him as Spike in ''Hi-de-Hi!'', and after the series finale, he and some of his cast mates went on to star in ''Series/YouRangMLord'' and ''Series/OhDoctorBeeching''.
