Joins the Tamakoma Branch later on and forms a squad with his friends Yūma and Chika with him as the leader.

* AwesomeByAnalysis: He is great at analyzing the situation and creating new strategies on the fly with what limited resources he has.
* BadassOnPaper: Osamu's accomplishments are typically hyped up to sound a lot better than they actually were, such as when he had a draw with Kazama. Yes, the ''last'' match was a draw, but he lost 24 times before that.
* {{BFS}}: His Raygust-trigger, which is basically a huge energy-sword that can double as a shield and thruster, and even a combat knife (though this function has only been shown by Reiji).
* BoringButPractical: With Spider, he can make wires to trip people and restrict their movement (or psyche them out in fear of the above). That's pretty much it--and it's very effective.
* ButtMonkey: It's well-known that he's not a strong combatant, meaning that in rank matches, he's the easy point that everyone wants to get.
* CannotTalkToWomen: Inverted. While Tsuji, who plays this straight, has low standards, he applauds Osamu for how comfortably he can hang out with a group of girls (or as comfortable as Osamu ever gets around people, that is).
* ClassicalAntihero: He has low self-confidence, and isn't the best of fighters, but is willing to fight for what he thinks is right nonetheless. This leads to people, principally Yūma, Chika and even Kitora and Kazama, having good expectations of him.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: He'll jump in to help anyone in need, including the very people bullying him.
* CombatCommentator: For Tamakoma-2's first rank battle, as he was still recovering from his injuries and so sat it out.
* CoolLoser: Inverted. Osamu seems like typical bully pickings--nerdy and awkward--but once his status as a Border agent is revealed, he becomes something of an idol and the school bullies promptly begin avoiding him.
* CowardlyLion: As Osamu himself puts it, he throws himself into danger because it's ''not'' his instinct to do so. He knows that if he didn't make prioritizing others a habit and instead ran away, then the latter would become his reflex instead.
* {{Determinator}}: During the second invasion, he does absolutely everything he can to protect [[spoiler:the cube-ified]] Chika, whom Aftokrator is targeting. [[spoiler:He nearly dies in the process, but he succeeds.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When the class bullies are tossing around another student's pencil case and hit Osamu with it, he ignores the bullies and silently gives it back to its original owner (all the while nervously sweating): [[ChronicHeroSyndrome he'll always try to do what's right]], but [[HumbleHero doesn't like to make a big deal out of it]] and [[ClassicalAntiHero lacks confidence]].
* FamedInStory: To a degree. Most Border agents aren't all that recognizable, but post-second invasion, the populace knows about him thanks to his stint at the press conference.
* FakinMacGuffin: In a particularly clever moment, Osamu takes advantage of Alektor's property to turn Trion attacks into cubes by deliberately firing off failed shots to create cubes out of them before swapping Chika's cube out for one of the duds. This maneuver is one of many that contributes to saving Chika's life, as Hairein was unable to realize Osamu had been carrying a fake until it was far too late.
* FatalFlaw: His desire to help out and/or be useful. Aside from the fact that his ChronicHeroSyndrome has nearly gotten him killed on a few occasions, his biggest mistakes have usually been because he lost sight of his own weakness in the moment. [[spoiler:Namely, using Chika's trion to assist Izumi, only to get Chika cube-ified for it, and trying to fight instead of hiding and thus getting sniped by Azuma.]] It's part of why Spider is such an effective tool for him, as one of the reasons Kitora suggested it: it's a trigger that allows him to keep supporting his teammates even after bailing out, meaning that he no longer has to try so hard to prove himself in battle.
* FollowingInTheirRescuersFootsteps: Jin saved his life in the past (namely, when Osamu had snuck into the Forbidden Zone after Border rejected him), and he believes that it's played a part in who Osamu is today.
* GuileHero: His discussion with the upper echelon to get Hyuse on the team shows that he's not half-bad at negotiating, including using the very same tactic Netsuki once used against him (i.e. planting someone to voice dissent, thus providing him with the opportunity to bring up the counterargument).
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Played with. Osamu can't seem to catch up to the others no matter how hard he tries... because not only do they have years of experience over him, ''they're working just as hard''. As Kitora points out, it would be ''unreasonable'' to expect that he could be on their level with just a bit of training, and that it'd be two years before he could genuinely catch up (and that's being generous). On the flip side, despite his low trion levels, Osamu's hard work does have visible results, such as when he fights a Marmod for the second time--just not when he's comparing himself to similarly dynamic human beings.
* HumbleHero: Humble to the point of being a doormat.
* ImNotAHeroIm: At the press conference, where he's accused of a hero complex for breaking the rules to save his classmates [[spoiler:which resulted in the large-scale invasion]], he responds with the awareness that he's ''not'' a hero. Being only an ordinary person, he acknowledges that all he can do is make what he thinks is the best decision in the moment, even if it ultimately ends up as a mistake. Therefore, he won't pretend that everything he does is the right thing to do.
* InSeriesNickname: Many characters, whether amicably or as an insult, refer to him as Megane-kun(メガネくん), often translated as either "Four-eyes" or more literally, "Glasses".
* JerkassToOne: Downplayed, since he's still polite and passive, but Osamu is rather wary of Katori. It's notable since otherwise, Osamu is drawn to people whom others would consider to be a {{Jerkass}} (Kitora, Kikuchihara, Ninomiya, Yuiga...) and is willing to/actively wants to work with ''them''. Most likely, it's because nothing productive comes from Katori's abrasiveness, unlike the others.
* LivingADoubleLife: Initially, his classmates don't know that he's a Border agent and he'd rather keep it that way, even though that bit of knowledge would stop any bullying towards him.
* TheLeader: As per Yuma's condition for joining, Osamu becomes captain of Tamakoma-2. He's confused at first, but it becomes increasingly clear why Yuma (and Chika) thought he'd be an effective leader.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: A secondary function of the Raygust is an energy shield. He also has the regular Shield Trigger.
* MagneticHero: Downplayed. While he's not as charismatic a personality as many other characters in his role thanks to his socially awkward tendencies, his genuine kindness, agreeable personality, and open-mindedness to others has lead to him getting the unexpected help of characters such as Kitora, and even finding an unlikely friend in [[{{Jerkass}} Kikuchihara]] of all people.
* MemeticBadass: Along with the rest of his team Osamu becomes this InUniverse during the C-Rank wars after managing to draw with Kazama during their duel. Of course Osamu being [[HumbleHero Osamu]] is naturally embarrassed by this praise especially since the story is a bit distorted. After his loss against Midorikawa and revealing the truth of the duel to the other C-Rank trainees his reputation as this stops... only for him to get a new one since [[TheAce Yuma]] calls Osamu his leader and he is apparently important enough to be in a private meeting with Kido and the other higher-ups of Border.
* MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes: During his unconscious state during his NearDeathExperience, he goes through a series of quick flashbacks of how he ended up joining Border.
* NearDeathExperience: [[spoiler:At the end of the second invasion, where he's hospitalized and essentially comatose for a while.]]
* MorphWeapon: Raygust.
* NervousWreck: Mildly, in comparison to some other characters, but he's usually seen nervously sweating so often that it's practically part of his design. His volume profile even pokes fun at it.
* NiceGuy: Extremely polite and helpful, even towards jerks and people he barely knows, not because he is naive but because he wants to do what is right.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: He knows that he'll be reprimanded for saving his school--as he broke Border rules to do so--rather than rewarded, though enough characters pull some strings to ensure the latter happens. [[spoiler:With that said, his act of heroism ends up having significant negative consequences down the line, even if Osamu makes it clear that he wouldn't change his decision]]
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Compared to the skilled and experienced Yūma and Chika's gigantic Trion-supply he is just a rather mediocre agent who can only survive by relying on his skills and wits.
* PositiveFriendInfluence: He's responsible for helping Yuma adjust to Earth culture, after Yuma grew up in the constant warzone that is the Neighborhood, and eventually focuses on [[spoiler:giving Yuma something to live for again, once Yuma realizes he can't bring back his father from his Black Trigger]].
* RefusedByTheCall: It's eventually revealed that Border actually rejected him, presumably because of his low trion levels. How he managed to get in despite this is still unknown, though it's implied Jin had a part in it.
* TheScapegoat: [[spoiler: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] but [[SubvertedTrope subverted]]. Eizo Netsuki ''tried'' to shift blame for the 32 C-Rank agents being kidnapped to Osamu, but because of [[SpannerInTheWorks Katsumi Karasawa]], Osamu not only had the opportunity to stand for himself, he turns the situation around and says he will save the kidnapped agents himself, which earns a very favourable reaction from the public]].
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: As a C-Rank trainee at the start, he's not actually allowed to use his trigger in a real fight. Doesn't stop him from doing so to protect his classmates, and he explicitly states that he wouldn't change his decision.
* SecretlySelfish: Downplayed. He dislikes people praising him for going out of his way to help Chika, since as he states, he's really doing it for himself as well: that joining Border was his way of coping with his frustration over his own helplessness.
* ShirtlessScene: Takes off his shirt in episode 58 to blindfold a Trion Soldier and remains shirtless for the succeeding episode.
* SmallStepsHero: Osamu Mikumo is an archetypical Small Steps Hero, as he makes it flat out clear many times that he will not ignore the plight of any helpless person to save his own life or to prevent a future tragedy/conflict. This comes back to bite not just him, but everyone on Earth after [[spoiler:using his trigger in real battle teaches the Neighbors that C-Rank Border agents can't Bail Out (a mechanism which allows them to teleport to safety when taking fatal damage). Because of this, a large-scale invasion happens that claims more lives than he originally saved, but Osamu makes it clear he'd do it all over again.]]
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: One of the few people wearing glasses and definitely smart.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: Can jump into danger without reservation, and when it counts, he can even stand up to bullies and make public speeches (though in the latter case, he falls apart a tad once out of the moment), but overall, dealing with people tends to make him nervous.
* SpecsOfAwesome: He has his moments.
* StockShonenHero: Played with. He has the determined, well-meaning attitude down pat, to the extent that Karasawa calls him a modern hero. However, he's timid and cautious over reckless (ChronicHeroSyndrome aside), and he has none of the special status, power levels, strength (no matter how much TrainingFromHell he might go through), or brawn-over-brains associated with the archtype. He's also not even remotely out ToBeAMaster, with his goals instead being to give Yuma a purpose and to assist Chika in saving her brother.
* TheStrategist: His primary role in the team.
* SupportingProtagonist: To a degree. His own development is one of the backbones of the series, but at the end of the day, the one whose motivations--going on the expedition, etc.--drive the plot forward is Chika, not him.
* SwordAndGun: Being a Shooter he mostly specializes on using his Asteroid (in cube form), though he still uses his Raygust for close-combat and defensive purposes.
* TakeAThirdOption: Of sorts, but one of the biggest points of tension in the large-scale invasion is that at least one future leads to Osamu's death. In the final stretch, however, when things seem hopeless, he and Replica choose to enact a plan that, by Replica's own admission, is one that guarantees nothing as it's outside of Jin's precognition--that is, [[spoiler:throwing Replica into Aftokrator's away ship]].
* TookALevelInBadass: He is definitely one of the characters who has the most catching up to do, so this is pretty common.
* TrapMaster: Once he starts using Spider. It's much easier for him to master it within a short time frame rather than master direct combat, since as Kitora puts it, buildings don't move.
* TurnTheOtherCheek:
** He hardly bats an eye at Midorikawa's confession that he was trying to humiliate Osamu, as Osamu feels that his recognition was undeserved in the first place and is happy to clear the air about it.
** He makes it clear that he doesn't begrudge Jin at all for [[spoiler:deliberately using him and Chika to minimize damage to the city, even if it nearly got him killed and the latter abducted]].
* VictoryByEndurance: How he wins the fight against Suwa. Osamu mostly stood around during the match (even if that itself was a mind game against his opponents), but the result is that [[spoiler:Suwa, the last enemy standing, forgets that he's even there]], and then...
* WalkingShirtlessScene: For episodes 58 and 59, considering he takes off his hoodie to blindfold a Trion Soldier. Made even more hilarious by the fact that he didn't take his shirt off at the beach.
* WalkingSwimsuitScene: For at least four episodes, from episode 56-59 by virtue of being captured by Gieve while still wearing a hoodie with green swim shorts.
* TheWatson: In the beginning, he's still relatively new to Border and therefore needs most of the world's mechanics explained to him, as does the reader.
* WeakButSkilled: The major difference in Osamu's fighting style in comparison to [[TheAce Yuma]] and [[UnskilledButStrong Chika]] is that unlike them he has a below average amount of Trion compared to normal soldiers. Osamu makes up for that by his creative manipulation of Trion, his willingness to receive disabling injuries and also conserving his power to make critical shots. As Karasuma [[LampshadeHanging points out]] Osamu is weak but not stupid.
** In particular, Osamu is uniquely skilled ''because'' he's weak. Many of his strategies are based on the idea that, if possible, he shouldn't even be in a direct fight and should instead manipulate the battlefield for his more powerful teammates. When he becomes a somewhat conventionally stronger fighter, he tries too hard to do well 1 vs. 1 when ultimately, this is a series about ''team'' matches, and it backfires on him.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Part of why he fights, even when outmatched. As he tells Yuma, if he runs away even when people wouldn't begrudge him for it, he'll inevitably run away again when it matters--he knows himself well enough to understand how he'd behave.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Mikumo is incredibly mature for his age, deciding to keep his working for Border a secret despite the fact that it would likely scare off the school bullies and working hard to get good grades.

One of the main characters. A humanoid neighbor from an unknown world who illegally came to Earth and transferred to the same class as Osamu, later joining Border to form a squad alongside him and Chika.

* TheAce: Yuma is definitely this not just amongst his own team but to other agents of Border as well. Not only is he in possession of a Black Trigger and has full mastery over it, when he joins the ranks of Border he willingly switches to using a weaker Trigger and still kicks an insane amount of ass. Not only that but thanks to his years of combat experience in the Neighborhood he has a brilliant strategic mind for battles. Finally, during the second Neighbor Invasion [[spoiler: he manages to defeat Viza in his normal Trion body and use the last of his power to finish off Hairein]]. By the time of the B-Rank Wars he is officially considered to be TheAce of Tamakoma-2.
* AdaptiveArmor: His Black Trigger.
* ArmedLegs: Can power up his legs with his black Trigger.
* AlmightyJanitor: Starts as a C-Rank trainee after joining Border, despite being easily A-Rank in skill and S-Rank when using his Black Trigger. He still insists on going the normal through the rank-wars to earn a solid reputation as a neighbor in Border.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Looks like a human but is a humanoid neighbor in truth. The white hair might give a hint (though it actually isn't entirely natural). ** In the fifth round, Kuga's usage of Osamu's wires makes him unparalled in agility. He also uses Scorpion as emergency first-aid, repairing a hole in his torso with it to prevent excessive Trion loss.
** In the sixth round, Kuga uses the standard Bagworm trigger to quickly assassinate Kurauchi of team Ouji - nobody expects an attack from a radar-invisible enemy while in the middle of a close-range firefight. Later, he uses Grasshopper on a pieces of debris to smack enemies with - even tripping up Oji with the use of a wire-attached piece of debris.
** By the last round of the B-rank Wars, Kuga has developed a way of essentially throwing shurikens with Scorpion, which he can then further redirect with Grasshopper, increasing his options for fighting medium-range enemies. To top off his feats of Grasshopper usage, he repeats his feat from the sixth round and [[CarFu launches an entire car]] at team Yuba's Obishima.

* TechnicalPacifist: It's pointed out that she's this, even with her supposed refusal to shoot people, and why Toma and Hyuse believe she's capable of "killing" if she needs to.
