They are both hated by most dragons for something they didn't even do and are disappointed about going to Jade Mountain academy due to it meaning leaving their mother who they only just got the chance to spend time with. Flame is far more angry about the situation, though.

* EyeScream: [[spoiler: Viper's attack]] makes him blind in one eye.

* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He is arrogant and always bringing up how he's the irreplaceable one, since his counterpart Glory clearly doesn't fit the prophecy. But his thoughts in ''Moon Rising'' reveal that he thinks that his mother and everyone in the school hates him, and [[spoiler: though he didn't set the dragonflame bomb, he almost wishes he did just so someone would notice him.]]

* ChildrenAreInnocent: For the most part. His desire to see Ruby kill Scarlet aside, he's a very sweet dragonet who wouldnt hurt a fly. Even when he comes across Leaf in ''Dragonslayer'', he acts playfully to him, sings, and eventually persuades Ruby to give him the key to the kitchen cage so Leaf can rescue his friends. Normally, dragons ''eat'' scavengers.

* CivilWar: The Sky Kingdom briefly descends into one after her disappearance, with some fighting for Scarlet and some for Ruby, the new queen. Fast-forward six months and Ruby has quite firmly become queen and is much beloved.

* ChildSoldiers: Proudly identifies herself as one of Queen Ruby's warriors.

* ChildHater: She is not a fan of dragonets. As a result, she doesn't even know that [[spoiler: [=SkyWing=] dragonets generally know how to fly at Cliff's age.]]

* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:It turns out that she was Tourmaline all along, and was given FakeMemories of Tourmaline being her sister. Naturally, she has an identity crisis when she finds this out, and chooses to remain as Ruby.]]

* YoungestChildWins: Is Scarlet's youngest daughter, and the only one that survives and becomes queen [[spoiler: and her true identity is also Scarlet's youngest daughter.

* AfraidOfTheirOwnStrength: She was raised to fight, and tends to want to solve problems with violence - though given how destructive she can be by just touching a dragon, she has to try to curb this tendency. She becomes terrified of accidentally hurting a dragon with her scales.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Is shunned by the other [=SkyWings=] due to her firescales. Though what she has actually used her scales for is not helping.
* AmbiguousDisorder: She has NoSocialSkills, anger issues, and [[{{Yandere}} an obsessive interest in Clay]], to the point of [[InsanityImmunity being so crazy that Moon can't read her and even Darkstalker has trouble.]]
* AngelDevilShipping: InUniverse with Clay. Dragons like Sunny wonder how someone like [[AxCrazy Peril]] could ever deserve [[AllLovingHero Clay.]]
* AngstySurvivingTwin: She killed her twin in the egg, which adds to her self-hatred and feeling that she's [[ThenLetMeBeEvil destined to be a monster]]. [[spoiler:It turns out that it was actually Kestrel who killed her brother, though.]]
* AppealToInherentNature: When we first meet her, she argues that she kills because it is the nature of a firescales dragon to do that. Clay notes that this is exactly what the guardians told him about his nature.
* TheAtoner: She has recurring nightmares of the atrocities she committed and desperately wants to redeem herself for her crimes, though she believes herself to be a lost cause.
* AxCrazy: Initially, having been raised to delight in bloodshed and death. She starts to grow out of this with Clay's influence, but still struggles with murderous impulses.
* BadDreams: She has bad dreams about Scarlet nearly every night.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Why she fell in love with Clay, since he was the only one who treated her like a dragon.
* BeYourself: In ''Escaping Peril'', she ultimately learns to accept herself, firescales and all.
* BigDamnHeroes: Shows up just in time to save Clay from [[spoiler:a Dragonbite viper's bite.]]
* BloodKnight: Even more so than other [=SkyWing=]s, as she was raised as a gladiator. She also has a somewhat warped sense of honor. Even after her HeelFaceTurn, she struggles to suppress the urge to immolate everything around her.
* BreakingOutTheBoss: She rescues [[spoiler:Scarlet]] from [[spoiler:Burn's prison.]]
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Gender-flipped with Clay, as although Peril starts off CuteAndPsycho, her cheerfulness takes a dive by the end of book one, and by the time she reappears she's become brooding and temperamental.
* BroughtDownToNormal: When she [[spoiler: wears Chameleon's necklace]]. She still has normal [=SkyWing=] powers, just not her fire scales.
* BrutalHonesty: As part of her NoSocialSkills. Turtle admires this aspect of her, though.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Taunts Avalanche with how, for all she swears revenge and how Peril should die, she won't remember her within a few minutes. She also can't confirm or deny that she killed Tourmaline partially because she'd killed so many dragons before, however angry Ruby is with that particular one.
* ButtDialingMordor: She ends up accidentally [[spoiler:freeing Darkstalker]] when she was just trying to get Jade Winglet to stop fighting.
* CannotSpitItOut: She cannot admit her love for Clay and wants to rip Starflight's tongue out for saying so.
* CatchPhrase: Substitutes "blazing" for "awesome". She's stopped using it by the time she reappears.
* TheChampion: She was raised as Queen Scarlet's gladiatorial champion and executioner, molding her into a BloodKnight with excpetionally poor social skills.
* ChildSoldier: Literally since she hatched, Scarlet has been using her to kill people. She doesn't know any other way to live.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Once she falls in love with Clay. Lampshaded by Tsunami.
* CradlingYourKill: When she fights [[RedShirt Horizon]] in the arena, he realizes that there is no escape and hugs Peril to make his death quicker. Peril holds him as she burns him to death, though Scarlet is not happy at what she sees as an AntiClimax.
* CreepyBlueEyes: Her eyes are described as an unnatural and unnerving shade of blue that are not anything like what you'd normally see in a [=SkyWing=]. Ruby is quite creeped out by them.
* CuriousQualmsOfConscience: She never quite feels pure guilt about what she has done - her feeling are too complicated and caught up in trying to impress Clay, so she doesn't actually recognize her guilt about [[spoiler:freeing Darkstalker]] and Turtle has to tell her that that's what she's feeling.
* CuteAndPsycho: When she first appears, Peril is remarkably cheerful in regards to eventually killing Clay and gladiatorial combat in general.
* DefectingForLove: Why she left Scarlet.
* DontMakeMeDestroyYou: While she's always itching for a fight, post HeelFaceTurn Peril warns dragons who try to attack her that touching her scales means risking certain death.
* DramaticNecklaceRemoval: She removes the necklace that [[spoiler:Chameleon]] gave her to make her fire scales disappear when she realizes [[spoiler:he also enchanted it to convince her to follow Scarlet.]]
* TheDreaded: Everyone fears her so much for her fire scales that she stops a fierce battle just by flying in the vicinity, since everyone is scared of even getting near her, and [[spoiler: she is able to help Scarlet, who has no other allies around besides Chameleon, take over the Sky Kingdom just through everyone's fear of her, even though she no longer has her firescales.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Her feelings for Clay are so blatantly obvious that [[ObliviousToLove he's the only one who's in the dark]].
* EvilCounterpart: Initially for Clay. They both are told that it is their nature to be monsters by abusive guardians, but Peril actually acts like this while Clay feels like he's not monstrous enough.
* FightingFromTheInside: In ''Escaping Peril'', [[spoiler:after being brainwashed by Chameleon into being loyal to Scarlet and forgetting about Clay, some part of her can't shake the feeling that what she's doing is wrong and that she's forgotten something important]].
* FightingYourFriend: Scarlet arranges for her to [[KillTheOnesYouLove fight Clay to the death]] after Peril demands to fight to have [[spoiler: Kestrel's execution waived]]. Peril having just betrayed them during their escape attempt, Clay wonders if she intends to go for TogetherInDeath.
* ForbiddenFruit: She only goes to Kestrel's trial because Scarlet mysteriously insisted she shouldn't go. Normally, she thinks the trials are horribly boring, especially given the way [[HangingJudge Scarlet]] always makes them end.
* ForceAndFinesse: [[ExaggeratedTrope Exaggerated]] with her and [[spoiler:Turtle]]. Peril can kill a dragon just by touching them and is unbeatable in arena combat, but she's hopeless at anything even vaguely long-range, while [[spoiler:Turtle]] is completely helpless in battle and can't so much as fly without being tired, but [[spoiler: has animus magic, which is very rare and ''very'' powerful]].
* FriendlessBackground: All dragons besides Queen Scarlet and Osprey avoided and feared her her whole life.
* FullyEmbracedFiend: Starts out as this, in contrast to Clay (who is terrified by his SuperpoweredEvilSide). But by the end of ''The Dragonet Prophecy'', [[spoiler:Peril is the one terrified of herself, while Clay has found out he had no evil side in the first place.]]
* GenkiGirl: She is cheerful [[CuteAndPsycho even while flambeing her opponents]]. When she reappears, she's become far more brooding and serious.
* HalfIdenticalTwins: She had a twin brother who was born in the same egg as her but had too little fire instead of too much. FridgeBrilliance kicks in when you realize that some reptiles' gender is determined by their temperature in the egg.
* HeadbuttingHeroes: With Winter. They might be both on the same side, but that doesn't stop them from fighting each other and despising each other.
* HealItWithFire: Uses her fire scales to heal [[spoiler: Clay's dragonbite viper bite. ]]
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Decides to help Clay and his friends despite her loyalty to Scarlet [[spoiler: but then betrays them. Later on, she rescues Scarlet after saying she wants to be a better dragon, but then leaves her and saves Clay's life. Then she briefly turns evil again thanks to Chameleon's necklace, until she realizes what is going on and takes it off.]]

* IAmWhatIAm: At the end of ''Escaping Peril'', [[spoiler:She no longer wants to get rid of her fire scales and and even sees their benefits, realizing that her fault was in being loyal to Scarlet all along, not being born a "freak".]]
* IHatePastMe: At the beginning of ''Escaping Peril'', she refers to her GenkiGirl self from ''The Dragonet Prophecy'' as stupid and naive.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: Ruby notes that reason Peril started killing for Scarlet was to obtain her approval and affection. This is also the root of her infatuation with Clay, because he is the only dragon she can get close to.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: She's quite happy about being given the chance to lose her firescales [[spoiler: until she finds out that Chameleon also gave her loyalty to Scarlet and made her forget Clay]].
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: But her firescales and her [[TheDreaded reputation]] usually make that impossible. When Chameleon gets rid of her fire scales, the first thing she wants to do is just hug all of the other [=SkyWings=] and make friends with them all.
* ImNotAHeroIm: Rejects Clay's offer to join the Dragonets because she feels unworthy, having betrayed them, and calls herself "a villain".
* InsanityImmunity: Her mind is so tormented and somewhat insane that [=NightWing=] psychic powers can barely understand it at all. This gets toned down by the end of ''Escaping Peril''.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Osprey.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Peril is strongly dependent on Scarlet to make decisions for her, and later tries to replace Scarlet with Clay. Clay recognizes this and refuses to let it happen, a choice Peril eventually grows to understand.
* LoserProtagonist: She's an outcast with NoSocialSkills who is perpetually trying to be noticed by [[ChasteHero Clay.]]
* MeaningfulName: Since no-one can even get close to her without sustaining severe burns.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After [[spoiler:accidentally burning Winter]], has this reaction, literally thinking to herself "three moons, what have I done?"

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: When she [[spoiler:destroys Darkstalker's scroll so neither Darkstalker nor any other dragon could abuse its powers]], it only succeeds in [[spoiler:freeing Darkstalker.]]
* NighInvulnerable: Due to her firescales, almost nothing can get close enough to hurt her before being incinerated.
* NotMeThisTime: She really didn't [[spoiler:kill Tourmaline.]]
* NoSell: She is immune to fire, heals from frostbreath in minutes, and any [[BewareMyStingerTail [=SandWing=] tails]] that hit her bounce off and are set on fire without her being poisoned.
* NoSocialSkills: Due to her upbringing as Scarlet's champion, she tends to mess up and look off-putting even in her attempts to make friends.
* NotEvilJustMisunderstood: She knows no other way than bloodshed and death because she was raised in the gladiator ring.
* NotHelpingYourCase: She desperately wants to prove that she isn't an evil dragon who wants to burn everyone, but the way she keeps almost doing so or being angry at other dragons isn't helping. Peril realizes this and tries to hold herself back just so she won't be this trope.
* OneManArmy: She's capable of being a threat to a whole army of dragons due to her powers.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When she doesn't remember [[spoiler: who Clay is]], Queen Ruby instantly determines that she must have been enchanted.
* OutGambitted: She isn't much of a planner, but the one time she does make a plan, [[spoiler:to betray Clay and the other dragons to ultimately free them and Kestrel and make him love her]], Scarlet stops her by [[spoiler:making her fight Clay himself in the arena, which works especially well since Clay is the only one immune to her firescales]].
* PerkyFemaleMinion: To Scarlet, in the first book. She gets over both the "perky" part and the "minion" part.
* PowerIncontinence: She constantly radiates intense heat to the point where even being near her feels like standing next to an erupting volcano.
* PowersDoTheFighting: She relies completely on her ability to damage other dragons in a battle by touching them, so she finds she isn't quite so invincible when she gets into a dispute with Winter and he keeps dodging her.
* PyroManiac: Initially is quite happy about burning dragons with her fire power. Even after her HeelFaceTurn, she sometimes sets random plants on fire because she's angry.
* RedemptionQuest: Why she's trying to find Queen Scarlet and go to Possibility with Turtle in ''Escaping Peril''.
* ReformedButRejected: [[spoiler:Queen Ruby]] and most of the Dragonets of Destiny believe that she hasn't changed, or if she has, what she did is unforgivable. [[spoiler:Ruby at the very least gets over it by the end of ''Escaping Peril''.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Her whole life revolves around Clay. Her CharacterDevelopment in ''Escaping Peril'' involves becoming a dragon with her own identity instead of one that just follows Clay's decisions.
* SelfRestraint: She notes that she could have easily fought back to stop herself from being [[spoiler:exiled by Queen Ruby]], but she didn't want to be exactly the dragon [[spoiler:Ruby]] thought she was. She also struggles to keep a lid on her fiery temper and murderous impulses.

* TheSixthRanger: She is the only one of the second series protagonists not to be from the Jade Winglet, and only joins them halfway through the arc.
