* AintTooProudToBeg: Nobleman or no, when you're faving Nyarlathotep, all you can do is beg for your life. Unfortunately, Nyarlathotep's views on mercy are nonexistent.

One of the oldest Seers alive and the closest thing to a main character with a history centuries in the making, Eliza Cortly is a mysterious, ethereal woman in white first introduced to Michael Seer during his first death. Replete with her own HiddenDepths, Eliza is actually a mentor to Seers all across the world, saving and teaching one Seer after another in a desperate attempt to steer them away from the clutches of the Shadows' Consultant's dark rituals. She has a very storied history, having once been the wife of a chauvinistic Italian nobleman, and a partner of [[Literature/TheKindnessOfDevils Hardestadt Delac]] in the Renaissance era.

* AssholeVictim: Something bad clearly happened to him, and in both ''The Never Mythos'' and ''Kindness of Devils,'' there's no limit to horrific monsters out there that an overly arrogant fop could cross. Whatever got to him, however? He was a vain, stupid, abusive marital rapist and probably deserved it. [[spoiler: Only a Lonely Heart reveals he "died screaming" after the Defile treated him as an 'appertif' at some point.]]

* FateWorseThanDeath: At one point, [[TheDreaded The Defiler]] got hold of him. This is one of the single most horrific things that can happen to you in the whole Teraverse.

* TooDumbToLive: He managed to offend one of the oldest, strongest vampires in Italy which nearly got him killed. Not that he was ''aware'' of this, admittedly, but Stefano is a total idiot and might have assured his own end when he mysteriously vanished.
* UncertainDoom: He is mentioned, in ''Sangue Serenissima'' to have ''mysteriously vanished'' shortly after his wife did. As Eliza is alive and well in Venice as of the 1700s, this raises questions as to just what happened to him.

* BirdsOfAFeather: If it is her at the end of ''Only A Lonely Heart'', she and Hardestadt end up meeting by chance, and are both dedicated, passionate people looking for drinking and 'company' to drown out their own sorrows. [[spoiler: For added irony, they're both likely mourning losing ''the same woman.'']]

* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: Eliza paints Aisling as a wonderful, good-hearted person (And Eliza is one of the kindest people in the entire Teraverse.) Their love life had enough fire to burn down the Amazon.

* FriendsWithBenefits: Her apparent relationship with Hardestadt in 1900, although the two seem to have had deeper emotions before their breakup.

* VillainousCrush: It's hard not to read his attentions towards Eliza at least partly through this lens, [[spoiler:continuing further in ''Sangue Serenissima''.]]

Given they [[ForegoneConclusion are not together in modern day]], it remains to be seen how this will lead.

* StealthExpert: Eliza is ''incredible'' at stealth. Centuries of dodging the Consultant have lefther with an unparalleled ability to mask her presence and slip right into the insanely guarded Li Fonti manor where Adam and Hardestadt were instantly detected.

* TrophyWife: Eliza was little more than a status symbol for her husband Stefano, as well as a bedwarmer. She ''hated'' it.

* TheGhost: Despite being mentioned several times, Aisling has yet to make an appearance.

* TheLostLenore: Four hundred years on without sight or word, and Eliza still treasures her, even if she has no idea if Aisling is still alive, let alone remembers her.

* CloudCuckoolander: Faye's a giggly mess who openly considers the City's abominations "cute." [[spoiler:He's also a
deranged sadist with an... ''unconventional'' view of the world.]]

* UncertainDoom: [[spoiler: Faye is last seen dragged off by Lucia with no indication he actually dies from it.]]

* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: On the receive end of this from the Consultant at a point.

* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: In contrast to her sex life with Stefano which she seems to have ''despised'' from her memories, Eliza reflects briefly on her intimacy with Aisling with great fondness, and when she's with Hardestadt Delac in flashback, the two are extremely warm, passionate and caring with one another.

* TheLostLenore: Eliza's true love was a woman named Aisling, separated from her centuries before the late 1600s.

* RapeAsBackstory: In ''Sangue Serenissima'', Eliza's thoughts and her own brief mention of her former husband insinuate ''very'' strongly of how her marriage went and why Eliza does not think of Stefano with any fondness.

* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Eliza doesn't really care if she's seen naked by others, having little sense of shame.
* ShipTease: She and Hardestadt Delac seem to have a close knit bond that deepens little by little over the course of ''Sangue Serenissima.'' Eliza is noticeably comfortable with him and Hardestadt is kind, respectful and dedicated with her. * BerserkButton: the Eye seems to like its worshipers leaving it as much as it does Nyarlathotep, if its greedy, hungry reaction at [[spoiler: Eliphas Coyte's return]] is any indication.

* BigBadWannabe: For the saga as a whole. While Coyte is effective, he reaches far too high, bites off way more than he can chew and makes glaring errors that lead him to a horrific end from beings far more worthy of the title than he.

* HatesBeingTouched: Played with. Eliza is okay with physical contact in certain circumstances, but in others, she can noticeably seize up after she goes a long, long time without much contact with people.

* LackOfEmpathy: Coyte has no understanding of the feelings or importance of others. He cares ''zilch'' for their wellbeing or lives in pursuit of his goals.

* NiceJobBReakingItHero: One of the Daydreamers created an artificial Seer that obliterated the world, horrifying the Daydreamers. Also, [[spoiler: it was ''really'' unwise to throw Lucia to earth and unleash a vengeful sadist with nothing to lose upon the world.]]

* HealingFactor: Has a particularly pronounced one, first demonstrated when he receives a dose of acid which completely melts his face, which he shrugs off in ''seconds''.
