* TheMessiah: [[spoiler:Becomes Maotelus at the end of the story and is able to purify the world once from malevolence to give most of the daemons a second chance at a normal life]].

** WordOfGod puts her also as an expy to [[VideoGame/TalesOfXilia Milla]]. Something which even gets [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] when the two meet during the sidequest with the Xillia cameo bosses.

* TookALevelInCheerfulness: While it starts right about the time she starts calling her brother "Phi," it really settles in by the second half of the game. Velvet is more at peace with herself and all the contradictions felt in her heart and head; she smiles more often, is more willing to indulge in silliness from her party or Kamoana, has more frequent bonding sessions with Eleanor, and becomes generally more outgoing like she used to be as a kid.

* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Happened off screen, but conveyed nonetheless the second time she confronts the party. Eleanor reveals, without much prompt, that she figured out the High Priest was disguising a highly addictive drug as medicine in her investigation of Velvet's attempt to assassinate the High Priest, and even found out it was the High Priest who was being targeted by Velvet. Nevertheless, she still resolved to fight the party so the Abbey could put the High Priest on trial instead of allowing a party of daemons and outlaws kill him.

* StepfordSmiler: [[spoiler: Sidequests and later revelations during the main plot reveal that during the time of the prologue, he was this. He drops that in favour of feigning being entirely [[TheStoic stoic]] in teh present.]]

* TemptingFate: During his life with Celica, he stated that he never thought he could be so happy. Soon afterwards, Celica got sacrificed in the first Scarlet Night.

* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He murdered Velvet's brother and imprisoned her for years after causing her to become a Therion.

* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Unlike most of the main antagonists in the series, Artorius is seen as a hero and idolized by the world.

* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: [[spoiler:Episode 23 of ''Tales of Zestiria the X'' reveals that she's still alive and well even though over 1000 years have passed since the events of ''Tales of Berseria'']].

* {{Reincarnation}}: He's the Malak reincarnation of [[spoiler:Laphicet Crowe]]. However, the game makes it clear that a reincarnated Malak isn't truly the same person as their past self, which is shown by Innominat's callousness towards his former self's loved ones and how both were separate beings before the Scarlet Night. He may have [[spoiler:Laphicet's]] memories, but Innominat is clearly the will, not that it stops him from imitating [[spoiler:Laphicet]] to torment Velvet.

* DualWielding: Her third mystic arte has her using both her wrist blade and her red left hand simultaneously.

* JerkassFacade: She acts like a huge jerk so nobody gets close to her, reasoning that she's not someone worth having friends in not as many words. The party doesn't really buy it, because she takes it upon herself to be the TeamMom even if it's done in a slightly {{Tsundere}} way. This drops after her CharacterDevelopment fully kicks in.

* {{BFS}}: The sword on his back is about as tall as he is, though he can't draw it for personal reasons. [[spoiler:It was actually broken when he first drew it in the first shown fight against Shigure, and objects towards having it repaired as Rokurou keeps it as a sign of his weakness towards Shigure. Kurogane later forges him an orichalcum sword that sadly, also broke once more when Rokurou first fought against Innominat. The final version of his BFS was eventually formed out of Kurogane turning himself into it, which Rokurou eventually keeps around and uses for his Level 3 Mystic Arte]].

* {{Pirate}}: Even though Eizen is more of a straight example, technically all of the main cast are considered as pirates because they sail with Aifread's crew on the Van Eltia to fight against the Abbey. This even gets [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by Eizen in a DLC skit where he recommends everyone to dress and act properly as pirates, which can be invoked by the player with the DLC pirate costumes.

* BigScrewedUpFamily: It is revealed in a sidequest that the Rangetsu clan achieves succession as the head of the family, the "Shigure" title, through a series of assassinations on the current heads throughout the generations. Rokurou's mother slain her father to become Shigure, and later, Rokurou's older brother who's real name is Ichirou, done the same to his mother, becoming Shigure and the one swordsman Rokurou wants to kill. The reveal shocks the party, especially Eleanor, but Rokurou is not bothered by it seeing as how this had been going on for generations. [[spoiler:Rokurou's mother somehow survived though, seeing as she's the Dragonfolk Code: Red Daemon fought in the Empyrean's Throne. This also implies that she's a Malakhim, since she was on the verge of becoming a full Dragon. The reason Shigure couldn't slay her in this state was not because he couldn't, but because he chose not to knowing full well that it was his mother.]]

* RunningGag: His tail has been subjected to this since it's implied that it grows back. Either it's used as cutting practice by Rokurou or it's scared off by Kamoana for fun.

* CowardlyLion: Both Orthie and Russ are cowards who are afraid to face a Daemon, and are even mocked by Niko and Velvet because of it. However, [[TookALevelInBadass this changes when they become Therions]], and when the Exorcists invade Titania, the dogs protect Grimoirh from them without fear.

* StarterVillain: An interesting example that highlights our heroine's pragmatism. She accepts a job to fight and defeat Dyle, but ends up siding with him for his usefulness and helps him to take out her benefactors.

* KarmaHoudini: They have yet to receive any sort of comeuppance for attempting to commit genocide on the human race.

* FriendToAllChildren: Even as the Lord of Calamity, she still cares deeply about kids. This goes beyond her brother and Laphicet. She grows to care for Kamoana, consoles her with a hug once she cries about her mom, and willingly finds and opens her chest at her request. She also encourages Laphicet to help cure Videl of his illness, and immediately insists that he should go inside his house so he doesn't get colder once she finds out he even has an illness. She also never raises her voice at the kid NPCs, unlike all the other times she does to adults and authority figures.

* TheDreaded: Becomes this as the story progresses as her deeds become more noticeable eventually culminating in [[spoiler: earning the title of "Lord of Calamity"]]. In a more comical way, she is this to White Turtlez who soils himself whenever they encounter.

* FireForgedFriends: Combined with OddFriendship, her best friend and most trusted teammate is not her brother Laphicet, but her erstwhile rival and foil Eleanor Hume, who befriends her after becoming uneasy companions by circumstance. While it applies to the whole party, it especially counts for Velvet and Eleanor as they become TheConfidant to one another. Once Eleanor's side quest is finished, she has one final talk with Velvet just before the final dungeon, and in it, Velvet even says, with complete sincerity, "We're a lucky to have you with us, Eleanor."

* VengeanceFeelsEmpty: In her side quest, she reveals [[spoiler:a giant troll with a big club killed her mother, stole the jewel her family protected, and wiped out her village. She finally gets payback, but feels... nothing. What she thought would be triumph was only hollow, and indeed, malevolence starts emanating from her body once she realizes the anger she displayed at the troll is the exact same anger Kamoana would feel at her for killing her mother. She said she wouldn't blame Kamoana for trying to kill her, but admits she would probably still try to defend herself to the death if Kamoana attacked her, and she ''hates'' herself for it. It takes quite a while before both Velvet and Rokurou calm her down after reading a letter on how to take care of Kamoana by Mahina. She recovers and accepts full responsibility for taking after Kamoana in Mahina's place.]]

** This is a consistent trend with her, as it is paired with ThenLetMeBeEvil. It's the one thing she can't really reconcile about herself, and she grows to hate herself for being TheUnfettered. She accepts the AwfulTruth and reconciles that with her conflicting feelings of Artorius and her brother, but her conscience never let her rest, because much of what she does, from Aball to Haria and Meirchio, to Seres, Oscar, Teresa, and Niko, just to name a few, eat at her mind as guilt seeps in and she feels she's not worth saving. She's genuinely sorry at what she's done, [[spoiler:even before she learns it was AllForNothing as seen by how much her actions in Aball and Haria disturbed her the moment she realizes what she's done]]. While it nearly gets her killed in a HeroicBSOD, she's spurned back into action by Phi and eventually becomes TheAtoner who helps save the world from Innominat after finally getting her revenge, even if she's never remembered for her deeds except by the few who knew her personally.

The leader of the Abbey, considered a savior for exterminating a large number of Daemons three years ago. He used to live with Velvet as family, but isn't related to her.

* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: Played with due to this game being a prequel to ''VideoGame/TalesOfZestiria'' while being released later. Unlike Heldalf, who is an ObviouslyEvil [[DarkIsEvil Lord of Calamity]] with few allies, Artorius is a popular [[LightIsNotGood Shepherd]] who leads an entire organization of {{Knight Templar}}s. This trope is also downplayed due to their similar goals of ending the world's pain while choosing different methods to do so. Heldalf plans on accomplishing this by corrupting everyone with Malevolence while Artorius wants to [[spoiler:feed everyone's Malevolence to Innominat in order to make them "pure."]]

* TokenGoodTeammate: Shigure is the only member of the Exorcists to be both social and relaxed about the whole thing. He's also the only one who allows his Malak to have his own free will and in general he seeks a good challenge rather than some evil ambition.

* JerkassFacade: Acts like a huge jerk so that nobody can get close to her, especially towards Phi. No one buys it.

* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:Phi breaking her out of her HeroicBSOD and accepting the truth causes her to change considerably.]] Her hard edges begin to smooth considerably, and she is much nicer to Phi and Eleanor.

* CharacterDevelopment: Velvet undergoes the most changes of any character in the party not named Laphicet. She starts off as a cold, aloof, and bitter revenge-driven older sister, spurned only by her hatred for one man and uncaring of the consequences of her actions as long as they get her to him. As she grows more attached to Laphicet, she becomes a slowly DefrostingIceQueen with a slight Tsundere streak, a TeamMom outlook despite herself, and an emphasis on a JerkassFacade to keep people from getting close to her. After facing the lowest moment of her life with Innominat, she descends into a raving lunatic, violently lashing out at anything and everyone, while maniacally denying every image shown to her about Artorius' StartOfDarkness. Thanks to Laphicet, she snaps out of her predicament and finally reconciles her lingering love and seething hatred for Artorius and Innominat (whom her brother was used to reincarnate), and becomes more at peace with herself. She still wants revenge, but does it for her own sake, not for the sake of the men who tormented her all these years; her revenge becomes paired with ultimately saving the world from Innominat by arguing in favor of TheEvilsOfFreeWill; her selfishness becomes more about finding her own identity and maintaining her free will; and her ruthlessness, while still there, is toned down considerably, as she both TookALevelInKindness and TookALevelInCheerfulness. By the end, she's almost completely back to being the snarky NiceGirl she used to be as a kid, and it's a change many characters, from Tabatha and the Prince to the party all note.
