* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In a sense. Gunmar in the original book was a huge, red mass with multiple arms, and generally unpleasant to look at. This version of Gunmar, while still fearsome, at least looks more well kept and a capable fighter.

!!The Gumm-Gumms

[[folder:As a whole]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gummm.jpg]]

Gumm-Gumms are malevolent trolls under the control of their King Gunmar. They were sealed away into the Darklands by Deya the Deliverer and yearn to wage war with Earth and conquer it.
----
* ArmyOfThievesAndWhores: It is stated that the Gumm-Gumms were originally just unorganized tribes of barbaric trolls until Gunmar killed their original king and took control, banding them together into a fearsome army.
* DecapitatedArmy: [[spoiler:Once Gunmar is killed, all of the enslaved Gumm-Gumm soldiers turn into stone and disintegrate on the spot.]]
* {{Expy}}: The plating that makes up the masks worn by Gumm-Gumm soldiers make them bear a striking resemblance to that of Sauron from the film version ''Film/TheLordOfTheRings''.
** Two from the same film, to be exact, as their horns are also identical to those of the Balrog, Sauron's subterranean servant.
* FacelessMooks: The warriors of Gunmar's army all wear identical masks and armor; this is to hide the fact that [[spoiler:most of the are ordinary trolls who are BrainwashedAndCrazy]].
* TheFairFolk: They live in a parallel world, have disdain for humans, and steal human children and replace them with their own.
* FluffyTheTerrible: By human standards, their name isn't the most intimidating. However, in Trollspeak, Gumm-Gumm means [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast "Bringer of horrible, slow, painful, and thoroughly calculated death"]].
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Every Gumm-Gumm in the series possesses eyes that glow in the dark.
* ToServeMan: Blinky warns that one of the things that the Gumm-Gumms did in the past was eating humans, and it was one of their side motivations for sparking war with the surface.

%%[[caption-width-right:350:some caption text]]
!!!'''Appearances:''' ''WesternAnimation/{{Trollhunters}}'' | ''WesternAnimation/Wizards2020''
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ClancyBrown

The leader of the Gumm-Gumms who resides in the Darklands.
----
* BadassBoast:
--> "To wound me, one needs to be able to ''touch me'', child!"
* BadBoss: Gunmar operates on "MightMakesRight" to command his armies. Those who do not swear loyalty to him either die or are forced under his control against their will through the Decimaar Blade. Even if they were loyal to him beforehand, he will not hold back and give them a swift and unpleasant death if they fail him in any way, forcing one of his soldiers to commit suicide after Jim briefly escapes his manacles and killing another when it loses its arm getting run over a car. [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain He is incredibly racist to changelings]] ([[UngratefulBastard even though most changelings are loyal to him]]) and [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness kills all but one of the Janus Order]] when the times comes for him to invade Trollmarket, leaving Scaarbach alive to be controlled by him to act as a decoy.
* BigBad: The leader of Gumm-Gumms that the heroes must have to deal with in order to prevent his surface invasion.
** BigBadWannabe: Played with. [[spoiler:He ''thinks'' he's part of a BigBadDuumvirate with Morgana in Part 3. In reality, Morgana has every intention to dispose of him once he's [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness outlived his usefulness]] and is clearly the more dangerous of the duo. That being said, he's still a genuine threat and the plot still focuses on defeating him.]]
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:In the alternative timeline, when he and Bular corner Strickler, the Changeling realizes that Gunmar was never going to accept Changelings as equals and would wipe them out once they'd served their purpose. His purge of the Janus Order at the end of Season Two presumably leads the real Strickler to the same conclusion.]]
* TheBrute: Neatly fits into this role in addition to being the BigBad. Much like his son, Bular, Gunmar is a hulking thug whose modus operandi is to use brute force against anyone who won't submit to his cause.
* TheCorrupter: His sword has the ability to [[BrainwashedAndCrazy mentally enslave]] anyone who comes in contact with it. [[spoiler:When he learns that Jim's friends want to rescue him, and thus the Killahead Bridge will be reopened, he resolves to break Jim's will to enslave him, since Jim's armor is blocking his sword.]]
* DarkIsEvil: He's a dangerous antagonist and his picture shows he's black-colored.
* DarkLordOnLifeSupport: Downplayed. Centuries in the Darklands have left him weaker and prone to fatigue due to a lack of heartstone energy [[BroughtDownToBadass but he is still formidable]]. This changes completely at the end of Season 2 when [[spoiler:he feeds on Trollmarket's Heartstone and returns to full strength.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Despite being a BadBoss who is prone to YouHaveFailedMe, Gunmar clearly loves his son.
* EvilOverlord: Well, evil [[InsistentTerminology "Underlord"]], as he is called. Regardless, Gunmar is a classic example of this trope, being a hulking monster with dark powers and a BadBoss who routinely abuses his underlings.
* EyeScream: The third Triumbric Stone - the Eye of Gunmar - was ''literally'' his right eye, removed by Orlagk the Oppressor during his fight for control of the Gumm-Gumm army, and his eye is marked as a sign that Gunmar can be vulnerable. [[spoiler:For some reason, Strickler had it and gives it to Jim as a means to part amicably.]]
* FantasticRacism:
** He feels complete disdain for humans, believing them to be inferior to Trolls; his primary motivation is to wage war on the surface world and either enslave or devour all humans or both.
** Even though most Trolls have at least some distrust towards Changelings, Gunmar seems to have nothing but utter hatred of them, including the Janus Order which serves him unconditionally and basically worships him as a god. [[spoiler:to the point he personally kills everyone in the Janus Order once they're no longer useful to him.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: He rarely bothers acting friendly but on a few occasions, such as when he captures Barbera and Strickler, he speaks in a calm tone but is still [[IHaveYourWife making his intentions clear]].
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: He's unfamiliar with modern times, [[JustifiedTrope due to spending hundreds of years in the Darklands]]. This becomes especially clear when he mistakes a car for a "surface beast" [[spoiler:shortly after escaping from the Darklands.]]
* GoldColoredSuperiority: After [[spoiler:absorbing the power of the Heartstone]] at the end of Season 2, his eye and the lines across his body start glowing a golden yellow instead of blue, and by that point, he becomes even stronger than before.
* GreaterScopeVillain: He's a major figure in the show's backstory, and the threat of his return hangs over the entire show. However, since he's imprisoned in another dimension and is barely able to even communicate with his followers in the outside world, [[TheHeavy Bular and Stickler are the ones moving the plot.]] His wars for the surface world also ravaged [[spoiler:Angor Rot's village]], indirectly creating another menace to the Trollhunter legacy.
* HorrifyingTheHorror: [[spoiler:His mere presence is enough to even make ''Gatto'' run like hell. To rephrase, he is able to utterly terrify a troll that happens to be the size of a ''mountain''.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: Gunmar claims that he fights to claim superiority for all of trollkind. In actuality, he's simply just a power-hungry megalomaniac who views every creature around him, humans ''and'' trolls alike, as inferior and weaker than himself.
* MadeOfEvil: {{Implied|Trope}}. He was literally born from a Heartstone that was corrupted and turned black from the war between humans and trolls.
* TheMagnificent: Gunmar "the Black".
* NighInvulnerability: Whenever encountered by the heroes, he shrugs off whatever they can throw at him, and it's strongly implied that the Eclipse sword is the ''only'' weapon that can kill him, and only because it's made from his own power. [[spoiler:Indeed, it's not until Jim gets a clear hit with the before mentioned blade in the series finale that Gunmar dies a very explosive death.]]
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: Granted, he ''claims'' he just wants trolls to live on the surface without fear of the sun turning to stone, hence his goal to bring forth the Eternal Night. However, as time went on, the reality of his goal was just to assume power over humans ''and'' trolls, seeing them all as weak and pathetic compared to himself, and has no qualms eliminating any who opposes him.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: [[SealedEvilInACan Not by choice, mind you.]] When the Janus Order makes a replica of his throne and implores him to take a seat, he blows them off, saying that he's ''tired'' of sitting down.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: [[spoiler:His son was killed by Jim.]]
* PapaWolf: [[spoiler:Even while he's sealed in another dimension, don't mess with his son. When he found out that Jim killed Bular, he compiled a list of all of Jim's friends and loved ones and then sent it to him along with the message that he'll hunt down and kill all of them in vengeance.]]
* PetTheDog: Downplayed. When King Arthur and his knights once chased after the innocent trolls who escaped imprisonment Camelot, Gunmar distracts the knights and allows the good trolls to flee into the Wild Wood. However, given that Gunmar sent General AAARRRGGHH!!! to attack Dwoza to either join him and be killed, this was merely an act of possessive territory, and he didn't really care about the innocent trolls who fled from Arthur; he was likely just trying to intimidate the human king.
* PragmaticVillainy: When he's captured [[spoiler:the Trollhunter, Dictatious convinces him to keep Jim alive long enough for Jim's friends to come to rescue him. Gunmar agrees and plans to break Jim's will so that his armor upgrades will break, and then Gunmar can enslave him. He even says he'll consider Jim as Bular's "replacement". The only reason this fails is that Claire and Toby rescue Jim right when his will is at its lowest]].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Downplayed on the villainous side of things. He is an evil overlord and a BadBoss who punishes failure with death, but he is willing to listen to reason about accomplishing his goals. [[spoiler:When Bular suspects that Strickler has gone soft on the Trollhunter, Gunmar gives permission for Bular to test Strickler's loyalty. He also trusts Dictatious, who helps him escape to Earth after the latter finds proof that Jim's friends are planning to rescue him.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When Bular is killed by Jim, Gunmar (as revealed by Chompsky) compiles a list of his loved ones and decides that one of the first things he's going to do when he is released is to kill them and make Jim suffer as he had.
* SealedEvilInACan: By the time the story starts, he and his army are sealed in another dimension.
* SlasherSmile: Makes this when he realizes [[spoiler:Draal's relationship with Jim and decides to brainwash him, complete with EvilLaugh]].
* SorcerousOverlord: Unlike Bular, who was all muscle, Gunmar knows a modest amount of sorcery to bolster his physical abilities.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He's basically a taller version of his son with blue eyes instead of orange and much larger horns.
* TakenForGranite: [[spoiler:During the final battle, Jim slashes him with his sword, causing him to turn into stone, followed by Jim throwing his stone body into the ground, ultimately killing him for good.]]
* UngratefulBastard: The Changelings of the Janus Order played a major role in getting him up to date on the state of the world and infiltrating positions of power throughout the globe, and therefore potentially making his conquest of the world that much easier. How does he thank them? [[spoiler:By exterminating them (or at least their leadership and headquarters personnel) and forcing their leader to impersonate him to distract Jim in a fight to the death.]]
* VillainBall: Attempting to enslave Jim instead of killing him is what first allows the Trollhunter to escape the Darklands and ultimately gives [[spoiler:him a chance to slay Gunmar]].

* ArcVillain: [[spoiler:For the first half of Part 1.]]
* BadBoss: He treats his changelings as completely expendable, and is fully prepared to kill Ms. Nomura and Mr. Strickler for slipping up.
* TheBrute: His greatest asset is his strength and he clearly likes to use the direct approach when dealing with problems.
* CoDragons: He serves as DragonInChief for his [[BigBad father]] during his [[SealedEvilInACan imprisonment]], with Mr. Strickler competing with him for the position. This competition ends halfway through the first season when [[spoiler:Jim kills Bular and Strickler tries his hand at seizing power for himself.]]
* DarkIsEvil: He's a black-colored troll with glowing red and yellow eyes of evil. He's also a man-eater trying to free his father so they can wage war against mankind.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:It looks like he and his father are going to be the major threats throughout the season, but he's killed halfway through Season One, and his attempt to free his father fails.]]
* DualWielding: Wields two swords in battle.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Bular loves his father and is completely loyal to him.
* EvilCounterpart: To Draal. Both are experienced, prideful, WellDoneSonGuy warriors who take an instant like to Jim. However, while Draal managed to learn humility from being defeated and spared by Jim, Bular remained arrogant. As such, Draal became one of Jim's close friends who would be his personal protector, while Bular would [[spoiler:die by Jim's hands.]]
* EvilIsHammy: Just listen to the threats he slings to Jim in "The Becoming, Part 2".
* FantasticRacism: He despises his changeling servants, frequently calling them "impure".
* TheHeavy: While his father is the BigBad, Bular and Strickler are the ones moving the plot along to ensure Gunmar's freedom.
* HeroKiller:
** He's one of Jim's deadliest enemies during the first season, with a reputation for slaying Trollhunters. In fact, the first scene of the very first episode introduces him killing Jim's predecessor.
** ''WesternAnimation/Wizards2020'' also reveals that he's responsible for killing [[spoiler:Lancelot]].
* LargeHam: With Ron Perlman voicing naturally.
* MonstrousCannibalism: It's implied he'd be willing to eat Changelings (altered trolls) for betraying him as [=NotEnrique=] says they'd feed him to Bular for openly turning against them and in the [[ItsAWonderfulPlot alternate timeline]] Strickler fearfully assumes Bular ate him in the normal one.
* RasputinianDeath: [[spoiler:His death comes only after he's impaled on Jim's sword, turns into stone from sun exposure, falls off a bridge, sinks into a river, and then emerges only for AAARRRGGHH!!! to [[LiterallyShatteredLives punch him into a thousand pieces.]].]]
* TheRemnant: The sole Gumm-Gumm troll that escaped captivity when his people were sealed in the Darklands. [[spoiler:A trip to the past in WesternAnimation/Wizards2020 reveals how this occurred: he was literally tossed to the side and never sucked into the Darklands with the rest of his tribe.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: He's completely devoted to his father and saving him from the Darklands. His entire rivalry with Strickler for his father's favor comes across as a fight between two brothers trying to get their dad to notice them. Notably, when the completed Killahead Bridge fails to work the first time, Gunmar's first instinct is to blame Bular before their connection cuts out. Partly subverted as his father clearly loves him, orders that Bular takes command in his first appearance, and even listens to Bular when he suggests that Strickler has gone soft.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: Averted; the very first time he sees Jim in armor form, he tries to murder the young hunter before the latter has even summoned his armor. Strickler convinces him to not attack Jim and his mother directly because it would break the masquerade. Afterward, when he outs Strickler as a changeling to Jim, Strickler quickly devises a scheme to steal the amulet without Jim knowing, to keep Barbara safe.
* WouldHurtAChild: Bular makes it very clear that he wishes to "drink [Jim's] blood out a goblet made of [his] skull", no matter how young he is.

[[quoteright:193:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dictatious_trollhunters.png]]
!!!'''Appearances:''' ''WesternAnimation/{{Trollhunters}}'' | ''WesternAnimation/Wizards2020''
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MarkHamill

An intelligent troll who serves Gunmar. He is also Blinky's brother.
----
* BatDeduction: He figures out Killahead Bridge is in a forest by some choice words used by [[spoiler:Blinky]] during a supposedly failed interrogation.
* BlindSeer: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. He doesn't have precognition from the Pale Lady, but he does [[ExploitedTrope pretend to be one]] to get back in Gunmar's good graces. It doesn't last very long though when Gunmar learns of his fraudulence from Morgana herself.
* BrokenPedestal: Safe to say for Blinky, seeing that Dictatious was not only still alive, but a Gumm-Gumm within Gunmar's confidence, does not do much for Blinky's admiration of him. Soon after escaping Dictatious and the Darklands, Blinky tries to burn the former's books he once served as a TragicKeepsake.
* ButtMonkey: Becomes this in Part 3. Dictatious is ousted as a fraud seer, nearly gets killed several times, becomes the target of constant slapstick humor, and pretty much no one on either side respects or even likes him.
* CainAndAbel: He is the Cain to [[spoiler:Blinky's Abel and he has no qualms about killing his own brother]].
* CoDragons: He is prone to sharing the position of Gunmar's right hand with others ([[TeethClenchedTeamwork not that he has to like it]]), first with Scaarbach and now Usurna.
* DirtyCoward: [[spoiler:Dictatious willingly betrayed his own brother and the good trolls to join Gunmar, and later defect the Gumm-Gumms to warn the Trollhunters, simply to save his own skin.]]
* TheDragon: To Gunmar.
* EasilyForgiven: Sort of. [[spoiler:Although Blinky regains some respect for his brother after learning he was telling the truth about Gunmar plotting to resurrect Angor Rot and Morgana, he still doesn't trust him completely as he ''did'' try to kill him in the Darklands, willingly at that]].
* EvilCounterpart: To [[spoiler:Blinky]]. Both are highly intelligent Trolls with a [[spoiler:near resemblance to one another]]. But while [[spoiler:Blinky]] fights for good, Dictatious is loyal to Gunmar.
* EvilTwin: He is Blinky's evil twin brother.
* ExtraEyes: Just like his [[spoiler:brother]], but thanks to the latter, [[{{Irony}} they are now sightless]].
* HazyFeelTurn: [[spoiler:Joins the heroes' side in "Parental Guidance", but only out of self-preservation rather than any morality. He's useful enough that he goes unpunished for his actions, though he does seem sincerely touched by being saved by AAARRRGGHH!!! and later his brother.]]
* {{Irony}}: He has [[ExtraEyes six eyes]], but after a bright flash from [[spoiler:Blinky's]] flare crystal, he is left permanently blind.
* KarmaHoudini: Inverted. He betrayed his own kind to work for Gunmar, nearly killed several of the protagonists, and the worst thing to happen to him as retribution is being blinded. Even that doesn't stop him from serving Gunmar, as he only [[spoiler:switches sides]] to save his own skin, not out of any morality changes. He even [[spoiler:spends the final battle safely sheltered in the Domzalski's home with Toby's grandmother, all while the main characters are risking their lives.]] [[ButtMonkey Though the tremendous amount of abuse he takes]] shows karma didn't entirely miss him.
* KickTheDog:
** He tortures [[spoiler:his younger brother]] after encountering him in the Darklands, and makes it clear that he has switched sides of his own will.
** He eats [[spoiler:Toby's grandmother's]] cat while staying at his house.
* ManipulativeBastard: He shows that he is good at manipulating trolls to do what he wants. [[spoiler:Including his brother, while torturing him.]]
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Well, when he and the Trollhunters' parents have knocked out Detective Scott, he's quick to offer a solution.
-->'''Dictatious''': I have an idea!\\
'''Barbara''': We are ''not'' killing him.\\
'''Dictatious''': In that case, I ''don't'' have an idea.
* NeverMyFault: [[spoiler:After (sort of) switching to the good side and is being targeted for assassination, he "forgives" Blinky for blinding him as the latter tries to fend off the goblin horde]].
--> '''Blinky:''' (outraged) FORGIVE?! You were trying to ''kill me!''\\
'''Dictatious:''' [[ComicallyMissingThePoint That was circumstantial]].
* NotBrainwashed: He assures a shocked Blinky that Gunmar did not use his sword on him.
* OddFriendship: [[spoiler:After throwing his lot in with the trollhunters, he ends up staying at Toby's place and watches TV with his nanna]].
* TheReliableOne: A villainous example. As TheDragon to Gunmar, he seems to be the only one immune to his BadBoss tendencies. He kept him around and virtually unharmed despite being permanently blind (Gunmar having killed loyal Gumm-Gumm soldiers for lesser flaws), paid no mind to Octavious's mention of it (even having him brainwashed and the rest of the Janus Order killed despite their usefulness), and considers his council even when it conflicts with his more immediate desires (like sparing Jim’s life when discovering the candy Toby has been leaving him). [[spoiler:Subverted when Gunmar finds out he has been lying about being a BlindSeer.]]
* TokenEvilTeammate: In “[[Recap/TrollhuntersS3E7TheOath The Oath]]”, Barbara, Nana, and Claire's parents discuss what to do to an unconscious Detective Scott after knocking him out when he saw him. Dictatious is quick to recommend killing him, only for Barbara to shoot it down instantly.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: [[spoiler:Despite [[ManipulativeBastard knowing what Dictatious becomes in the future]], he genuinely was a good troll and was very close to his brother, Blinkous. Ironically, Dictatious seemed to be more nurturing and open to his feelings to outside travelers while Blinky was more cold and scornful towards them, fearing they'd cause trouble. Even when AAARRRGGHH!!! attacks their home, it's ''Dictatious'' who inspires Blinky to overcome their cowardice and instead bring wisdom to the good trolls. Too bad Dictatious [[FaceHeelTurn betrays his own wisdom]] when he's trapped in the Darklands after the Killahead Bridge battle, but it can be argued that this is what made Blinky who he is today.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Dictatious ruthlessly knocked a teenage Jim unconscious and later punched him in the stomach when he tries to fake a "stomach ache".
* XanatosGambit: His scheme to keep Jim alive and imprisoned. He finds out that Jim's friends are coming to rescue him, which will mean the Killahead bridge is open. Gunmar in the meantime seeks to break Jim so as to brainwash him; if he succeeds, he has a replacement for Bular, the amulet will be unable to choose a new Trollhunter and thus the trolls on the surface have no means of protection. If he fails, the Bridge will still open and Dictatious can interrogate whoever enters to find the Bridge's location. [[spoiler:It works partway, in that Gunmar manages to escape to the surface.]]

Queen of the Krubera trolls. In Season 2, she is revealed to secretly be in league with Gunmar.
----
* AllForNothing:
** [[spoiler:She murdered Vendel, framed Jim, and helped Gunmar take over Trollmarket just so she could take over the entire troll community. In the end, her EvilGloating led her to her well-deserved demise, and everything she's worked so hard for was sunk down to the bog with her.]]
** [[spoiler:When Dictatious proves to Usurna that Morgana is communicating through a phonograph, she casts it away to prevent Gunmar from knowing, seeing the witch as a threat to her position of power. Regardless, Gunmar ''still'' receives Morgana's calling.]]
* AmbitionIsEvil: [[spoiler:Everything Usurna has done, from becoming Gunmar's top advisor to framing Jim, was all because she wants absolute control over the ''entire'' troll community. She's willing to use any means necessary to keep her position of power, using BlatantLies and murdering witnesses in cold blood.]]
* BackStab: She [[spoiler:kills Vendel]] by stabbing him with a knife laced with Creeper's Sun.
* BadBoss: [[spoiler:She gloats to AAARRRGGHH!!! that she purposefully arranged his abduction by the Gumm-Gumms to give Gunmar a champion. This predictably leads to her soldiers immediately turning on her, because why would they serve someone who reveals they'd sell them out for their own self-interest?]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Usurna first comes off as a well-meaning if obstructive leader. Then, it's revealed she's working for Gunmar.
* BlindedByTheLight: As queen to a race of trolls that live in the deepest of mines, she is especially sensitive to light.
* DidntThinkThisThrough:
** After adding her Krubera soldiers into Gunmar's army, it never occurred to Usurna that AAARRRGGHH!!! – who's a Krubera himself and formerly a Gumm-Gumm ''general'' – could easily blend in and spy on Gunmar with nothing but a Gumm-Gumm helmet and spear.
** [[spoiler:She should've known better than admitting that the lives of the Krubera mean nothing to her. Then again, [[LaserGuidedKarma she totally had it coming]].]]
* DirtyCoward: [[spoiler:Murders Vendel, who was unarmed, to prevent him from clearing Jim's name, and later orders the Krubera to brutalize AAARRRGGHH!!! and weaken him so she could toss him around unfairly and push him into a bog to give him a slow death]].
* DisneyVillainDeath: [[spoiler:How she dies at the beginning of "Jimhunters". It's only a brief drop into a swampy mire, but it's lethal enough.]]
* DoubleAgent: She pretends to be in league with the rest of the Tribunal when really she is secretly in league with Gunmar.
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: [[spoiler:She's a major villain throughout seasons two and three, but dies with very little build-up at the beginning of the third to last episode.]]
* EvilAllAlong: See Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To [[spoiler:AAARRRGGHH!!!]]. They're both of the same breed of troll and share the role of NumberTwo, [[spoiler:AAARRRGGHH!!! sharing this role with Blinky for Jim]] while she takes the role of TheDragon [[CoDragons alongside Dictatious]] to Gunmar. But whereas [[spoiler:AAARRRGGHH!!! is [[DumbIsGood a simple yet pure-hearted]] troll that was turned to stone with creeper's sun, [[HeroicSacrifice sacrificing himself to save his friends]]]], while Usurna is [[EvilGenius cunningly evil]] that [[spoiler:''uses'' Creeper's Sun to kill Vendel.]]
** She also serves as a {{Foil}} to Vendel. Both are highly respected leaders and members of the Tribunal. However, Vendel is a BenevolentMageRuler who legitimately cares for the well-being of trollkind whilst Usurna is revealed to be EvilAllAlong, a BadBoss toward the Krubera, and was willing to endanger the entire troll community [[AmbitionIsEvil just for more power]].
* FantasticRacism:
** When [=NotEnrique=] was a witness in Jim's trial, she continually referred to him as "it".
** She states that the reason Jim was a bad choice for a Trollhunter was that he's a human. She says this right before throwing him down a pit to his presumed death.
* ForTheEvulz: [[spoiler:Basically, the whole reason why she gave AAARRRGGHH!!! and other Kruberas away to the Gumm-Gumms was just because she could.]]
* HateSink: Throughout part two, she acts like a petty, contrarian ObstructiveBureaucrat who only makes the lives of the heroes more difficult. Even when it's revealed she [[spoiler:was Gunmar's agent all along]], she still lacks the redeeming, [[EvilIsCool cool]] or grandiose qualities of other antagonists in the series, remaining a selfish SmugSnake until the end. Usurna's even dubbed by the ''fandom itself'' as one of the most despised characters in the ''entire'' franchise.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** She blames Jim for failing to protect trollkind after accidentally releasing Gunmar… the very same trolls she endangers herself by ''intentionally allowing'' Gunmar to enslave them red-handed.
** She believes Morgana and the Eternal Night to be nothing but superstition and, even after she hears the witch's voice from the phonograph, saw her as a threat to her own position of power. Once Gunmar receives Morgana's calling (the one ''she'' tried to hide from him in the first place), she follows his quest to free her and bring forth the Night Eternal.
** She brands the Trollhunters, the escaped trolls of Trollmarket, and even Dictatious (when he was outed as a false BlindSeer) as traitors to trollkind, even though she's proudly aware that ''she's'' the real traitor.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Eventually revealed to not give a single care about trollkind, nor even her own tribe; she's only motivated by her own ambition.
* ItIsDehumanizing: She constantly calls [=NotEnrique=] an "it" during the trial, despite his protests.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Usurna was worried about Nomura threatening to kill herself... because she just needed the changeling alive in order to activate the Staff of Avalon and begin the Eternal Night.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:She tries to execute AAARRRGGHH!!! by drowning him in a swampy mire, but her evil gloating ends up costing her when she reveals she purposefully gave AAARRRGGHH!!! over to Gunmar as a bargaining chip, proving that she doesn't care about the lives of her people. They immediately turn on her and knock her into the mire instead, where she drowns.]]
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:She gloats in front of AAARRRGGHH!!! that she willingly gave him up to Gunmar when he first believed that he was stolen… [[TheDogBitesBack the other Krubera don't take this revelation as well as she expected]].]]
* ManipulativeBitch: Usurna uses the trolls' arrogance and fear over Gunmar to convince them to accuse/blame Jim instead of plotting against Gunmar.
* MeaningfulName: Usurna's name alternates from "usurp", which means to selfishly/illegally steal a position of power by force. [[spoiler:Given that she murdered Vendel in cold blood to steal his authority over Heartstone Trollmarket, then leave it at the mercy of Gunmar… enough said]].
* NiceJobFixingItVillain:
** [[spoiler:As arrogant and somewhat tactful as she is, Usurna never considered that her questionable antics within the Tribunal, let alone getting information about the Blood Goblins, Gruesome, and even ''Draal leaving his post'', would raise [[OnlySaneMan Vendel's]] suspicions. This allowed him to [[CrazyPrepared record her murdering him to warn Team Trollhunters of her true allegiance with Gunmar]], merely just in case the real [[TheMole spy of Gunmar]] was actually ''a member'' of the Tribunal.]]
** [[spoiler:Also, [[EvilGloating gloating that the lives of the Krubera mean absolutely nothing to her]] causes her soldiers to [[HeelRealization see the error of their ways]] and [[LaserGuidedKarma leave her for dead]].]]
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: She claims everything she does is for the good of the Krubera, but AAARRRGGHH!!! accurately points out that what she's done [[ItsAllAboutMe was only for her own self-interest]]. Her only rebuttal is that [[IAmTheTrope "I am the Krubera!"]], completely solidifying the former's point.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain:
--> '''Usurna:''' ''[to Jim]'' If it’s any consolation, I believe your actions to be in violation of Troll Law because you’re human.\\
''[Later]''\\
'''Usurna:''' ''[to Nomura]'' Impures were ''made'' to serve.
* PragmaticVillainy: While she could care less of Dictatious' entire existence, Usurna finds it more practical if they work together, and also saving him from Gunmar's wrath when he loses his temper. Usurna scoffs at the very idea of her "saving" Dictatious and makes it clear that she merely wants to use the blind troll to achieve more power through Gunmar.
* {{Sadist}}: Takes a ''huge'' amount of pleasure at watching others suffer in her iron grip. She even watches with cold pride when Gunmar prepares to execute Dictatious for his fraudulence.
* {{Slimeball}}: When she and the Tribunal learn Gunmar is free, rather than work together to hunt down and destroy Gunmar, [[LawfulStupid they decide to blame Jim and put him on trial]]. Eventually, it is [[TheReveal revealed]] that Usurna was [[spoiler:a spy/advisor for Gunmar and was trying to get rid of Jim the whole time. It's even possible ''she'' was the one responsible for helping Gunmar escape in the first place]].
* TheSociopath: [[spoiler:Is revealed to be an expert manipulator who cares for no one but herself. She remorselessly killed Vendel and was perfectly fine with delivering Krubera babies, including AAARRRGGHH!!!, to Gunmar.]]
* VillainBall: Bragging about [[spoiler:willingly giving AAARRRGGHH!!! to Gunmar as a champion in front of her soldiers reveals just how little their lives mean to her. Immediately afterward, they decide on a change in leadership via throwing her into the swampy mire. Rather than beg for mercy, she keeps insulting her men and demanding their help right up until the moment she's pulled under the surface and drowns.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: It's basically impossible to talk about Usurna without giving away that she's [[spoiler:Gunmar's follower]].
* WouldHurtAChild: She tried to kill the teenage Trollhunter Jim by throwing him into the Deep, directly to his death. She also delivered Krubera younglings to Gunmar without a care that they could be killed.

!!Changelings

[[folder:As a whole]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trollhunters_s2janis.png]]

Changelings were once trolls who were stolen at a very young age by the Gumm-Gumms and experimented on, turning them into "impure" breed of trolls that can walk in daylight and disguise themselves as humans.
----
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]]. Changelings were created by the GreaterScopeVillain Morgana to serve the BigBad Gunmar on his genocidal mission to conquer both the troll and human worlds, so trolls aligned against them possess [[FantasticRacism a knee-jerk reaction towards them]], "impure" being a common slur for changelings. Because the closest thing they have to gain acceptance is from the Gumm-Gumms (and even then [[KlingonScientistsGetNoRespect they don't have much respect for them either]]), they don't really have much choice but to serve them. Their code of ethics promotes PragmaticVillainy and various members of the Janus Order seem to possess a certain distaste towards humans, but everything they do is done not out of a drive to do evil or reverence towards the Underlord and their creator, but rather a need to survive. Because of this, various changelings like Strickler, Nomura, and [=NotEnrique=] end up switching sides either because develop alternative loyalties through emotional attachment (Strickler to Barbara, [=NotEnrique=] to Claire) or abuse from their masters (Gunmar taking out his rage over Bular's death on Nomura).
* BecomingTheMask: Per WordOfGod, one of the main reasons they typically aren't trusted by ''any'' group they side with is their tendency to get a little too comfortable in their undercover lives.
* BlessedWithSuck: From their perspective given they are subject to scorn from every troll besides (maybe) Gunmar.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: The death or rescue of their familiars (i.e. the people they were swapped with) would rob them of their human forms.
* ChangelingTale: Basically their entire thing.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:The Janus Order is brutally murdered at the end of Season Two once Gunmar is done with them.]]
* CursedWithAwesome: Arguably as they have all the strengths of a Troll with the added ability to be able to walk in the daylight.
* FantasticRacism: Be they in Heartstone Trollmarket or among their fellow Gumm-Gumms, Changelings aren't exactly "welcome."
* InvasionOfTheBabySnatchers: They kidnap humans (especially babies) and keep them as "familiars" in the Darklands, using their appearance to blend in with the human world.
** [[spoiler:The Season 2 premiere reveals the humans are ALL still babies, even going back to the nineteenth century and quite possibly beyond; among the babies is the real Walter Strickler, who hasn’t aged a day after his birth]].
* KlingonScientistsGetNoRespect: Changelings are able to blend in with both troll and human society effortlessly, can use both troll magic and human technology and lack most trolls' weakness to sunlight. You'd think there would be some faction aside from their own that would find having changelings on their side to be a good thing. Even Gunmar thinks little of them, and the Janus Order was built to serve ''him''.
* MeaningfulName: The Janus Order. Janus is the Greek god of duality and transitions. [[spoiler:Changelings have a habit of making {{Heel Face Turn}}s.]]
* NebulousEvilOrganisation: The Janus Order.
* RuleOfThree: According to Strickler, Changelings everywhere abide by a code similar to the Trollhunter (though it prefers to promote PragmaticVillainy over [[PragmaticHero Pragmatic Heroism]]).
** Rule #1: [[HonorAmongThieves There's honor among assassins]].
** Rule #2: [[ImmediateSelfContradiction Rule #1 is a lie.]] [[NoHonorAmongThieves There's no such thing as honor.]]
** Rule #3: [[UsingYouAllAlong Everything and everyone is a tool to get what you want.]]
* WouldntHurtAChild: In order for the Changelings' disguises to hold, the children they have replaced must be properly cared for. As such, the heroes don't have to hurry to rescue them since they are in no danger.

Jim's changeling history teacher and the leader of the Janus Order.
----
* AffablyEvil: Legitimately cares for [[TheHero Jim]]: calling him by the flattering nickname, Young Atlas? Check. Maintains a friendly and good-natured disposition while in human disguise? Check. One of the Changelings, the most dangerous and evil trolls known to both mankind and trollkind? Check. He definitely fills the bill.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: As a changeling, he faces persecution from other trolls as an "impure." Bular in particular makes his prejudice known in their interactions.
* AntiHero: Ends up becoming one after he joins Jim and his team in their fight against Gunmar, filling in as an EvilMentor for Jim and is willing to do things that no other character is willing to do (like killing Claire when she is possessed by Morgana) [[LoveRedeems all out of his love for Barbara]].
* BadassCape: In his Troll form at least.
* BeastAndBeauty: As is becoming customary with Creator/GuillermoDelToro, Strickler (who does admittedly spend most of his time in his human disguise) falls deeply in love with Barbara.
* BecomingTheMask:
** While Strickler cites PragmaticVillainy as his reason for stopping Bular from just killing Jim, Bular and Gunmar worry that Strickler may have some genuine affection for Jim from his time as his teacher. Any affection he may have for Jim goes away fast after Bular engineers a confrontation between the two. [[spoiler:At least until the first season finale where surviving a harrowing ordeal together seems to make him fond of Jim again.]]
** While dating Jim's mother may have simply been a way to get closer to Jim (and later torment him), he discovers that he's actually quite fond of her, even confessing that he may be in love with her.
* BigBadWannabe: [[spoiler:After Bular's death and the destruction of Gunmar's gate, Strickler makes an attempt to grab power for himself. He plans on using changelings to replace influential world leaders to control the world from the shadows. Unfortunately for him, the rest of his Order are still loyal to Gunmar and his ambitions for world domination never get off the ground before Angor Rot comes after him in revenge.]]
* BreakTheHaughty: After [[spoiler:Angor Rot's soul is destroyed]], he loses ''everything'' including [[spoiler:the support of his fellow changelings, his only defense against Jim, and his relationship with Barbara.]] Needless to say, his confidence takes a nosedive and becomes a lot more pathetic.
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:Since the heroes don't want him around for the final battle with Angor Rot and he's been cut loose by his associates, Strickler decides it would be better for everyone if he left Arcadia on his own terms.]]
* {{Changeling}}: And not just any changeling; he's the head of the Janus Order and controls them all. [[spoiler:At least until they fire him for betraying Gunmar.]]
* CharacterTics: Is frequently fiddling with his pen. [[spoiler:It's the key to a hidden chamber in his office.]]
* CoDragons: He competes with Bular for the position of Gunmar's right-hand man throughout Season One. [[spoiler:Then Jim kills Bular and Strickler decides to abandon Gunmar in pursuit of his own ambitions.]]
* CoolTeacher: This is his cover in the human world, where he's good at pretending to be concerned with his students' safety and future.
* EasilyForgiven: {{Zigzagged|Trope}}. [[spoiler:In spite of everything he's done, attempting to kill Jim, binding Barbara's life to his own, attempting to unleash Gunmar and being the cause for Angor Rot plaguing Arcadia, he and Jim part of civil terms in the finale. Jim even expresses hope that Strickler can someday change for the better. However, Blinky points out that he's clearly not redeemed in the team's eyes and Jim admits he isn't comfortable fighting alongside him.]]
* EmbarrassingFirstName: Well it's unclear how he views his real name, but it's evident that he prefers to be called Walter, as opposed to [[spoiler:Waltolomew.]]
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:He and Jim are forced to work together when Angor Rot comes to kill Strickler while Strickler's still under a spell that causes Jim's mom to experience any injury Strickler does. He offers Jim his help again at the end of Season 2 along with Nomura.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** [[{{Hypocrite}} Even if he did try to surrender Nomura to Bular when she failed only once]], Strickler's not too pleased that Bular is perfectly fine with throwing away the lives of his fellow changelings. In fact, securing the future of his fellow changelings is one of his stated goals.
** [[spoiler:In the alternate timeline where Jim didn't become the Trollhunter, he eventually believes a powerless Jim, and sacrifices his life to buy Jim time to run from Gunmar and Bular.]]
** [[spoiler:By the end of Season Two, he decides that allying with Gunmar is not worth it, especially after he massacred the entire Janus Order, and returns with Nomura to help Jim.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: His most consistent redeeming quality is that he really does have feelings for Jim's mom, Barbara. He even goes so far as to admit he loves her. [[spoiler:These feelings didn't stop him from binding their lives together with magic to ensure his own safety, but he did feel guilty about it, and he eventually undoes the spell after it nearly kills them both. Then he refuses to resume their relationship since she broke up with him before her memories were wiped.]]
* EvilIsPetty: Takes busy time out of plotting world domination to rub Jim's nose in the fact that he's dating [[YourMom his mom]].
* EvilMentor: When he returns in Season 3, he fills in as a second mentor to Jim. He teaches Jim to fight dirty and recognize when his opponent does the same, [[ThisIsYourBrainOnEvil exposes him to grave-sand in order for him to embrace his anger]] and various other [[AntiHero anti-heroic]] methods that contradict the traditional ethos of chivalry and valor Trollhunters usually fight with, [[VillainHasAPoint rightfully pointing out that such things won't work on someone like Gunmar]].
--> '''Strickler:''' Jim is a good kid, but a good kid can't kill [[BigBad Gunmar]].
* ForWantOfANail: Given his expression when he sees the amulet in Jim's backpack, he likely would have gone down a different path with Jim if the latter hadn't become the new Trollhunter.
* GoingNative: Out of all of the changelings present in the series, Strickler appears to be the most comfortable in his human guise. He prefers negotiation over battle, he spends more time in his human form even when he doesn't need to be (like with Bular and Angor Rot), he seems to genuinely like his teaching job, he has legitimate feelings for the human woman Barbara, he lacks the same taste for socks and cats like [=NotEnrique=] and most other trolls have and he seems to prefer the idea of the Janus Order keeping things running business as usual in secret instead of Gunmar's all-out invasion.
* TheHeavy: Serves as this throughout the first season. He assists Bular in his attempt to free Gunmar [[spoiler:and is the reason why Angor Rot comes to Arcadia in the second half of the season.]]
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: Averted. Barbara ''literally'' slams her door on Strickler's face when he returns to apologize for his "absence". Eventually, she realizes that Strickler really has seen the error of his ways and makes amends with him.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:He helps Jim against Angor Rot in the Season One finale, if only to make amends for his own actions, and the turn seems to have cemented as of the Season Two finale since he returns with Nomura to offer Jim his help against Gunmar.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:During the first battle with the Ice Titan, Strickler saves Jim, who was attempting to take explosives to destroy the Titan, only for Strickler to take those explosives to destroy the Titan, and himself in the process. [[SenselessSacrifice It doesn't work, as the Titan reforms almost immediately.]]]]
* HumiliationConga: [[spoiler:Things quickly go downhill for him once he loses the Inferna Copula. He becomes number one on Angor Rot's hitlist, the Janus Order fires him (leaving him with no allies nor anyplace to hide), and he's forced to beg Jim for help.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: Says he wants to secure the future of all changelings and tells Bular that he should care more before throwing away their lives, but earlier he was smirking when Bular nearly killed another changeling, Ms. Nomura, for one failure.
* InSpiteOfANail: [[spoiler:Despite the fact that Jim avoids him in the alternate timeline, he still helps the latter when Jim convinces Strickler that he was supposed to be the Trollhunter.]]
* InterspeciesRomance: He (a changeling) with Barbara (a human). Although, she's unaware of his real species.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:He gets away with a lot of nasty stuff during the first season, including murdering at least two people. Jim, who doesn't know about the murders, even seems to hope he can reform. That said, his HumiliationConga makes up for this, and to his credit he does make a sincere HeelFaceTurn.]]
* LouisCypher: After a fashion. His human identity of Walter Strickler is similar to his real name, "Stricklander".
* ParentalSubstitute: Jim briefly mentions in "Just Add Water", that he considered Strickler a father figure.
* PragmaticVillainy: Walter is shown to be more interested in his own self-interest when it comes to the dodgy, cut-throat world that he lives in, often leading to contradictory motivations at face value. The primary reason why he is a follower of Gunmar is so that he and his fellow changelings can live in a world where he and his fellow changelings could live in a world free of persecution due to their half-breed status (unaware that Gunmar does not care about them, [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness massacring the entire Janus Order as soon as he is done with them]]). When Bular (the only Gumm-Gumm in Arcadia that strong-arm him into staying loyal to Gunmar) is killed, he immediately changes gears so that the Janus Order drops all plans at releasing Gunmar from the Darklands, preferring the status quo of Changelings ruling the human world from the shadows, only going after Jim because he poses a threat to him. The only part of him that contradicts this self-interest is his love for Barbara, and even then he has his moments of this, not agreeing to lift the spell that is slowly killing both of them until Jim swears his safety out of Trollmarket.
* PsychologistTeacher: Rather than thinking Jim is lazy like your by-the-books teacher, Strickler could tell that Jim is simply distracted by his busy life and offers his counsel should he ever need it, and could even tell that Jim likes Claire and advises him to simply ''tell'' her instead of staring all day. Safe to say, he legitimately cares about Jim, even after finding out that he was the new Trollhunter.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:He doesn't appear in the second season at all (save for an orientation video seen in the Janus Order and an alternate reality where Jim didn't become the Trollhunter) right up until literally the last few minutes of Episode 13 when he comes back to help Jim deal with whatever's coming in Season 3.]]
* SenselessSacrifice: [[spoiler:He succeeds in saving Jim's life after he falls from the cable attached to the Ice Titan, only for his wings to freeze, then takes the grenades that Jim had and dies tragically by blowing himself up to stop the Ice Titan. Skrael recreates the Ice Titan moments later, smirks at Jim's distraught at Strickler's demise, and continues his way to the Heartstone for his omnicidal goals.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Strickler's first talk with Jim has him advise the young man to actually ''talk'' to Claire if he likes her.
* SmugSnake: He's not really as clever as he thinks he is, with his plans for world domination never getting off the ground, [[spoiler:the Janus Order abandoning him, and his former [[TheDragon dragon]], Angor Rot, is a far bigger threat than he can handle. In the end, he's reduced to groveling to Jim to save his own life.]]
* TheStarscream: After [[spoiler:Bular's death]], he attempts to take control of the Janus Order using Angor Rot instead of free Gunmar.
* TeacherParentRomance: He has a cover as a teacher and is attracted to Jim's mother.
* TokenEvilTeammate: [[spoiler:Along with Nomura after Season 2. He's fighting against Gunmar but is willing to perform some pretty evil acts, most notably when he tries to kill Claire to stop [[GreaterScopeVillain Morgana]].]]
* {{Troll}}: Towards Jim. Especially after his priority became to kill him.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Not in his human form, but as a troll all he's constantly bare-chested with his only clothing being a cape and a kilt.
* WolverineClaws: His cape comes with sharp stone daggers he can either throw or use as claws.

* ArrogantKungFuGuy: "Fear keeps you alive, arrogance gets you killed". This is especially prevalent when Nomura is tricked into killing a goblin and getting attacked with goblin vengeance mid-fight ''twice''.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: With [[spoiler:Draal]]. All of their interactions in Season 1 has them as bitter enemies, but Season 2 shows that they do have lingering feelings for one another as when [[spoiler:Draal goes back to rescue her from imprisonment and Nomura being just as happy to be with him.]]

She then beats Jim to a pulp, kicks away the amulet, and knocks him out. [[spoiler:When they fight again in Season Two, though Jim is holding back, she still has the upper hand in their battle.]]
* NoHuggingNoKissing: Whatever ways she and Draal used to express affection for another, it didn't involve what is usual by human standards. They both even express disgust at human displays of affection.
* NonchalantDodge: During [[spoiler:Strickler and Jim's training in season 3 in preparation for Gunmar]] she easily dodges all of Strickler's feather knives with her eyes closed whilst sipping tea.
* PurpleIsPowerful: As a human, she wears purple clothing and as a troll her skin is purple. She's also a scarily competent combatant.

!!!'''Appearances:''' ''WesternAnimation/{{Trollhunters}}''
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TomKenny

A changeling and a member of the Janus Order. He briefly took control of the Janus Order in season 2.
----
* AllGermansAreNazis: He speaks in a deep German accent and is a high-ranking member of [[ANaziByAnyOtherName an organization that works for the mass genocide of the populace through the whims of his "Führer" Gunmar]]. Given that Changelings live long lives like most trolls, what would the odds of Scaarback being involved in UsefulNotes/WorldWarII be?
** Although he does shake things up a little by addressing Gunmar as [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarI "Kaiser"]] instead.
* CoDragons: Throughout Season 2, he's competing for the position of Gunmar's right-hand man with Dictatious. [[spoiler:This ends when Gunmar decides that the Janus Order has [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness outlived its purpose.]]]]
* DragonAscendant: [[spoiler:After expelling Strickler from the Janus Order, he takes the latter's place as their new leader.]]
* FatBastard: A portly, sadistic fellow.
* HiddenDepths: He initially seems to be Strickler's easily-frightened lackey. Near the end of Season One, he shows a cruel streak. Come Season 2, he's acting like a CardCarryingVillain.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He berates and leaves Strickler for being selfish and putting his needs above the rest of the changelings, yet in Season 2 he acts like a CardCarryingVillain sadist who doesn't seem to care at all about other people, not even his own.
* KickTheDog:
** Even if Dictatious isn't a good fellow, it was still a dickish move for Otto to trip him, especially since he's well aware that Dictatious is blind.
** Also, his decision to abandon Strickler definitely counts. [[KickTheSonOfABitch Though considering all Strickler's done…]]
* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler:He honors the agreement to give the antidote for Creeper Sun poison in exchange for Vendel's staff.]]
* MistakenForMurderer: When he has Blinky, Claire, Toby, and [=NotEnrique=] bound up and at his mercy with various tools and a record player playing classical music, Toby thinks that he was going to have them tortured and killed like a WickedCultured serial killer. Instead, he uses the record player as a medium to [[spoiler:stay in contact with Morgana]] and uses the tools to remove Toby's BracesOfOrthodonticOverkill so that it won't pick up any of their signals. Subverted, since being a member of the Janus Order, it would be no surprise if he ''had'' killed at some point in his life.
* OnlySaneMan: During the second half of Season 1, he seems to be the only one that understands just how dangerous Angor Rot really is.
* TheRival: Becomes one to [[spoiler:Dictatious]], as they're both competing for Gunmar's favor.
* ShapeShifter: [[spoiler:Being a changeling polymorph, he is not confined to just shapeshifting into his familiar.]]
* TheStarscream: Downplayed. He delivers the news [[spoiler:to Strickler that the Janus Order has fired him.]] That being said, he didn't hesitate to [[spoiler:leave Strickler to die at Angor Rot's hands]]. Season 2 shows us that [[spoiler:he became the Janus Order's new leader shortly afterward.]]
** He also tries to steal Dictatious's spot as Gunmar's right-hand man, not so subtly hinting that Dictatious's newfound blindness makes him useless. Unlike most examples of this trope, Scaarbach is quite loyal to his boss and only wants to usurp his [[TheDragon Dragon]], not the man himself.
* TooDumbToLive: He really should have taken Gunmar's [[FantasticRacism obvious disdain for "impures"]] as a warning sign for [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness what awaited]] his continued loyalty.
* WouldHitAGirl: Knock out Claire along with her friends.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:Gets subjected to this by Gunmar near the end of Season 2, when he's used as bait and ultimately killed by the Sword of Daylight.]]

* DepravedDentist: Well, depraved dental ''hygienist''.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Pops up briefly in Episode 2 when Jim is rushing to tell Toby about the amulet's powers.
* IdenticalStranger: Zig-Zagged. Gladysgro's troll form looks a lot like Bagdwella. It's left ambiguous why Trollmarket residents & changelings look so similar, so for all we know they could be long-lost kin.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Jim's first real kill of the series, albeit in self-defense.]]
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Downplayed. [[spoiler:It is the death of Gladys that allowed Gunmar to choose another changeling to take her place. In this case, it was [=NotEnrique=] who takes Enrique Nunez's place and sets the heroes on a quest to save him from the Darklands.]]
* TortureFirstAskQuestionsLater: Since she hit Toby with a tranquilizer strong enough to keep him from escaping, it also keeps him from being able to talk properly. Since she did this with intention of interrogating him, it becomes obvious that she had every intention of torturing him with her dental equipment first.

* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:In the Season 2 premiere, after Enrique is returned from the Darklands, [=NotEnrique=] loses the ability to transform into him, thus making him essentially a normal troll, though one still subject to the scorn of other trolls due to still being an "impure".]]
* BrattyHalfPint: He's technically an adult but qualifies regardless. He's a pint-sized jerk who enjoys annoying either the Trollhunters or Gumm-Gumms.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: He spends his time constantly double-crossing both the heroes and villains, at least until the mid-season 1 finale when he tries to remove the amulet from the bridge, [[HeelFaceTurn ultimately proving his allegiance to the heroes]].
* CompanionCube: He grows attached to Susie Snooze, the real Enrique's bunny doll (which was also Claire's), to the point of having one-sided conversations with it.
* DefectingForLove: Non-romantic love in this case. [=NotEnrique=] comes to truly care about Claire as his adopted sister, and switches sides when he realizes that allying with the Gumm-Gumms nearly got her killed by goblins. Not to mention that she's close to tears all the time because her baby brother is trapped in the Darklands.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: For some reason, possibly having to do with his sisterly love for Claire, [=NotEnrique=] refuses to be part of the plot to open Killahead Bridge after it's established that Strickler managed to get the amulet. He then establishes he's on the heroes' side by trying to remove the Trollhunter amulet from the Bridge and getting blasted for his efforts.
* FragileSpeedster: He's quick and agile, but when someone larger and bulkier manages to pin him down, he's done for.
* TheGadfly: Adores annoying players on both sides of the conflict.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: For much of the first half of Season 1, it's difficult to say whose side he's on apart from his own. Luckily, in the end, he eventually [[HeelFaceTurn transitions from minor evil minion to mild jerk who's willing to help the heroes out]].
* IChooseToStay: On Earth. He was preparing to leave after [[spoiler:the real Enrique was rescued, but Claire said she still wanted him around.]]
* TheImp: He's a pint-sized {{Jerkass}} who tends to make life difficult for the heroes, even after they become ostensible allies.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While initially self-serving and has a big mouth, [=NotEnrique=] has a good heart deep down as he has genuinely come to care for Claire despite their occasional clashes, just like real siblings. He even proves that he wants to join the heroes when he tries to remove the amulet from Killahead and even saves Jim [[spoiler:when Morgana possesses Claire]].
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: His true name is never stated.
* SpannerInTheWorks: For hero and villain alike.
* SuperDrowningSkills: He can't swim or hold his breath well.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He likes to eat stinky and sweaty socks. In fact, it's initially the only way to get him to help the Trollhunters.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Eventually, he and Claire develop this relationship.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: [=NotEnrique=] is actually the first troll that tries to remove the amulet from Killahead Bridge. He gets blasted for his efforts, but it says something that the smallest changeling so openly switches teams.

A race of magical creatures from the Darklands loyal to Gunmar.
----
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: All goblins are hedonistic and violent brutes who delight in causing trouble and pain, o their only redeeming quality is their fervent desire to avenge one of their fallen.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: There's your run-of-the-mill blue and green Goblins, and there are the much more intelligent and bloodthirsty white Blood Goblins.
* DisproportionateRetribution: When one of their own is slain, they won't rest until whoever is responsible (or whoever they THINK is responsible) is dead.
* {{Expy}}: The various goblins present in the show are very [[Film/{{Gremlins}} Gremlin]]-esque.
* FacialMarkings: Their leader is often seen drawing a mustache on their faces with a marker. Should the leader die, the next in line will draw an identical one on themselves.
* NonIndicativeName: The blood goblins are stark white and not red as their name would suggest, this is [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by Blinky. Presumably, they are named for their bloodthirsty nature.
* PetTheDog: The goblins in charge of caring for the infant [[{{Familiar}} familiars]] do seem to have some genuine affection for them.
* {{Pirate}}: There actually seems to be one goblin dressed in pirate garb who lives in Trollmarket. He speaks English and is taller than other goblins. Sadly, little is revealed about him before [[spoiler:he is killed by Angor Rot.]]
* RevengeBeforeReason: Even if it was a complete accident, even if they have other things they need to do of higher priority, even if you ''didn't actually do it'', if they see a dead one of their own, your best option is to run. Very fast.
* SmarterThanYouLook: One of the green, garden-variety goblins figured out how to spell out Jim's name in English, then told Eli and Steve to "Kill Jim" with a Speak and Spell. Most of the green goblins only speak the Goblin tongue and have never shown any sign of literacy.
* UndergroundMonkey: The blood goblins taking care of the infants held captive in the Darklands are smarter and more aggressive than the average goblin.
