Added DiffLines:

* IDidWhatIHadToDo: One early event details a confrontation between a Tin Seung-Hang, Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Republic of China Restoration Committee, and an unnamed collaborator. Tin accuses the collaborator of being a "shameless fucking race traitor" to which the collaborator responds by claiming that China is dead and that the Nanjing regime is a bloated corpse. The collaborator proceeds to tell Tin that he couldn't care less about about the Kuomintang and their lost cause, instead wanting to focus on the people living here just trying to survive the Yasuda Crisis.

* AllohistoricalAllusion: Nagano Shigeto was an IJA and later JGSDF officer who served as the Chief of the Ground Staff from 1978 to 1980, and was a politician after 1980. He was most infamous in OTL for publicly denying Japanese war crimes like the Rape of Nanking immediately after becoming the Minister of Justice in 1994, resulting in his resignation 11 days after his appointment. In TNO, Nagano Shigeto's personal leader trait here is ominously called simply "As Nanjing, So Too Guangdong," a reference to his callous OTL views towards the Rape of Nanking.
* ArmiesAreEvil: Of all the possible outcomes for the Guangdong region, the army taking direct control and rampaging across it in an orgy of RapePillageAndBurn is by far the worst, even compared to the literal slavery of the Manchurian model. Komai might be the worst possible normal leader of Guangdong, but Nagano is Guangdong's failstate.
* BerserkButton: Nagano is most infuriated by the Product Testing Research Group sending research divisions to fight in proxy conflicts, viewing them as boondoggles that force his men to fight wars with suspect weaponry for profits like mercenaries.
* DownerEnding: Nagano and the IJA taking over is Guangdong's failstate, as it ends with the IJA going on an incredibly violent rampage throughout the region, and completely dissolving Guangdong as a country.
* EvilerThanThou: While all of Guangdong's other leaders are not very sympathetic, and many of them can drown the corporate state in blood to maintain control and order, Nagano Shigeto will slaughter them all if they can't contain the Oil Crisis riots, demonstrating just how bad things will be for Guangdong's people when he turns his weapons on them next.
* AFatherToHisMen: Perhaps his only sympathetic trait is his care for his men, despising the fact that they are used by the Product Testing Research Group to fight in proxy conflicts across the world, with equipment that has not been tested before, for profit and to sell weaponry. If the IJA takes over Guangdong, he makes sure to have apology cards sent to the families of the men who died fighting in those conflicts.

He tells Yoshiko that the Chief Executive knows they are here and surely Matsuzawa would not turn down a chance to meet them. But after months of no developments and their funds beginning to dry up, Yoshiko begins looking for work to which he warns her of the dangers outside and says he will cut back on smoking and food.
* HopeSpot: After weeks of waiting, Yasukawa finally gets a call from Chief Executive Matsuzawa, who apologies for not reaching out sooner and invites him to a meeting. Unforunately this optimism is cut short as the taxi he takes ends up going down the wrong route and hitting a cyclist in a Chinese/Zhujin neighbourhood. Yasukawa is pulled out of the taxi and beaten by an angry crowd, leaving him battered and broken eventually leading to his death.

* ParentsAsPeople: He clearly cares for his daughter, but his concern can also make him condescending to her. He chastises her curiosity with the poorer Chinese and Zhujin residents living in Guangdong and expects her to get married rather than “worry about the world”.

Not only does everyone ignore his connections, the guard outright steals a horrible mischaracterization. Takeda sees Nagano's brutal actions as completely necessary thousand yen right in front of him and there’s not a thing he can do about it.
* StayInTheKitchen: Despite her persisting demands, Baron does not want Yoshiko
to restore stability get a job, even if it means an extra source of revenue to alleviate their troubles in the Yasuda Crisis. Besides the misogynist undertones, he also doesn’t want her working because he fears that she’ll be harmed by the street violence plaguing Guangdong.
* TemptingFate: When he and his daughter visit Guangdong, Baron reprimands Yoshiko for staring at the impoverished Chinese citizens living on the street, remarking that there’s no point in giving them any curiosity because she’ll never come

->'''In-Game Biography''' [[labelnote:Click to Show]]A decade and more passed by in this absurdity of a place, a decade wasted while good Japanese men were slaughtered in pointless fucking wars to satisfy the whims of a lot of money-grubbing traitors. Ten years, ten years frittered away, and for what? So that loyal soldiers of his Majesty the Emperor could be reduced to sapient test rats!\\\
"No more," Nagano Shigeto says.\\\
Tokyo has given its local IJA commander its blessing - as it should have done years ago. Now Nagano Shigeto will bring order to the chaos of the Guangdong riots - just as he helped to do so in China four decades ago. For its countless follies, for the very absurdity of its existence, Guangdong deserves nothing other than to be ended - and Nagano will be the one to bring it about.\\\
Guangdong's innermost apocalypse has been distilled into the force of a single man, who shudders slightly in utter glee at the prospect of putting an end to the corporate experiment that once ruled over the Pearl River Delta. If Guangdong thought it had known war beforehand, it was wrong-\\\
[[gray:-for Nagano Shigeto has no intention of leaving anything in this unnatural hellhole of a state untouched.]][[/labelnote]]
----
* AllohistoricalAllusion: Nagano Shigeto was an IJA and later JGSDF officer who served as the Chief of the Ground Staff from 1978 to 1980, and was a politician after 1980.
* GeneralRipper: Despising the megacorporations for "wasting" Japanese lives as "sapient test rats," Shigeto is described as gleeful in his desire to utterly destroy the "unnatural" state of Guangdong and "restore order" by burning it to the ground.
* ThePurge: Nagano starts as he intends to go on, executing all the corporate chiefs and turning Guangdong into a glorified IJA base to prepare for the coming Great Asian War. His "End Corruption" focus art is literally a severed head.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's impossible to talk about Nagano's role in Guangdong's storyline without talking about its climax, and the worst possible outcome of said climax.
* VillainHasAPoint: In an early meeting with Miyazaki, Nagano complains about Suzuki's management of Guangdong, calling the police too ineffective and corrupt for its own good. Even though he doesn't have the Chinese people's best interests in mind, he is making a legitimate complaint about Suzuki.

* DirtyCop: The Guangdong Police Force consists of little more than blue-clad, jack-booted thugs with endless pockets and little oversight. There are many instances of police officers extorting civilians for money. During the Yasuda crisis the number of bribes from the Triads and Yakuza only goes up as officers are desparate to maintain an income.

Added DiffLines:

* BigBrotherIsWatching: Frustrated by the failures of the Guangdong security forces, Suzuki becomes intrigued at a proposal from France for "an all-seing warden". Seeing that Guangdong does not have the manpower or professionalism for a proper security force, Suzuki senses that Guangdong's technology could be used to root out dissent.

Added DiffLines:

* AnswerCut: While Ibuka and Morita bicker over how to handle the Yasuda Crisis with Suzuki gone, Matsushita intervenes and stops the fighting by suggesting that they find a caretaker Chief Executive to stabilize the situation. Just as Matsushita is talking, Matsuzawa walks in on them and Matsushita gets the bright idea to nominate him, being the first to propose the solution.

* TheDreaded: The Kenpeitai are feared across Guangdong for their kidnappings and "questionings" of suspected criminals. Even the Legislative Council has reason to be anxious about them, since they could pose a threat tot heir power.

* InvadingRefugees: Nobody in the slums near Port Shōri reacts positively to the hundreds of Japanese people who immigrate to Guangdong during the Yasuda Crisis, believing that they are invaders trying to exploit them too. They don't realize that these "invaders" have no choice, since they lost everything in the Home Isles and need to find somewhere else to live.

** Furious about being slandered by the media after the Yasuda Crisis, Suzuki can blame Sony, Matsushita, or Fujitsu for the campaign, but none of these options stop the vote of no confidence from passing.

Added DiffLines:

* CompanionCube: Suzuki treats his old suitcase as a companion he's had since his time in the Army and the House of Peers. Seeing it again is the only bittersweet part he feels about being dethroned in Guangdong and returning to Japan.

Added DiffLines:

* EmptyPromise: As the stock market crashes in the Yasuda Crisis, Suzuki tries to reassure the press that the government has sufficient reserves to restabilize the market, hiding just how bleak the entire situation is.

Added DiffLines:

* HonorBeforeReason: Facing political fallout from the Yasuda Crisis and unable to get support from the Four Companies, Suzuki can decide to stand alone than ask for support from the Kenpeitai, Yakuza, or Triads. Suzuki ends up paying for it when the police force loyal to him sinks further into corruption and further ruins his reputation.
* ICantDoThisByMyself: Needing the capital to mitigate the Yasuda Crisis and unable to tax the population, Suzuki has no choice but to turn to the Four Companies for help after spending years of badgering them. Suzuki is very reluctant to do so and it completely backfires when they not only refuse, but decide to hold a vote of no confidence.

Added DiffLines:

* MarkOfShame: With the vote of no confidence passing, Suzuki receives a note about being fired, acting as a letter of farewell. However, Suzuki considers it nothing more than a symbol of betrayal and his failure.
* MeaningfulEcho: After the Ibuka and Matsushita refuse to help him with the Yasuda Crisis, Morita comments that the other two left because it's "good business". An outraged Suzuki thinks "Business? This is politics!" In the next event, Suzuki gets news about a vote of no confidence being held against him and bitterly declares "This isn't politics; this is war..."

Added DiffLines:

* NeverMyFault: Suzuki knows he shares some blame for Guangdong's dire financial situation after the Yasuda Crisis, since passing the RLSO placed a major drain on their reserves. However, he mnetally tries to deny this out of anxiousness and to cope with the downward spiral of his reign.

Added DiffLines:

* PlausibleDeniability: If Suzuki relies on the Yakuza for their support in the Yasuda Crisis, he can incentivize them by ceasing police investigations against their opium trade, benefiting them and giving himself plausible deniability of their deal.

Added DiffLines:

* ThisCannotBe: With only twelve votes in the Legislative Council, Suzuki gets fired as Chief Executive, leaving him shocked that everyone, even Matsuzawa, has left him in the dust.

Added DiffLines:

* TooDesperateToBePicky:
** Unable to turn to Yasuda for help against the vote of no confidence, Suzuki is forced to bribe Legislative Council members from either Sony, Matsushita, or Fujitsu to gather more votes. He feels disgraced about groveling to them, but he's too desperate by that point.
** Out of options to relieve the Yasuda Crisis and save his career, Suzuki can turn to more unorthodox and unsavory options for support, including the Kenpeitai, Yakuza, or Triads.

Added DiffLines:

* DespairEventHorizon: Losing everything in the Yasuda Crisis, Matsuzawa becomes despondent and tired about the whole situation. When Suzuki tries to call for his support against the vote of no confidence, Matsuzawa's well-mannered tone is completely gone and the most he can promise is "I'll see what I can do."

Added DiffLines:
