* SmallRoleBigImpact: He and Spence are among the few people who found Planet X, yet the Leffbruk family has only been prominent so far in Phase II middle-grade novels. His family's discovery would become a significant lead for the Jedi Order 150 years later when Yoda tries to gather clues on how to defeat the Nameless when the Nihil start weaponizing them. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, a now-insane Azlin Rell tries to make sure that Yoda doesn't ever find Planet X by dropping a patrol ship onto a city where the Leffbruks' descendants settled and destroying evidence of their discovery.]]

* AgentProvocateur: [[spoiler:He is hired by the Path of the Open Hand to sabotage peace negotiations between Eiram and E'ronoh, bringing their war to Jedha.]]
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:The Mother kills him when he tries to flee with her and the Path on the ''Gaze Electric''. It's hard to feel sorry for him since she hired him to start the conflict he was trying to escape from in the first place.]]

* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Not only was he disowned by the Graf family for a number of misdemeanors (which is saying something given the Grafs have a negative reputation in the High Republic era) and he jumps at the opportunity to one-up the San Tekkas by taking one's part after he was killed, [[spoiler:he's also a war profiteer that is working with the Path of the Open Hand to instigate a battle on Jedha and keep the ForeverWar between Eiram and E'ronoh going]].
* HeKnowsTooMuch: [[spoiler:The Mother has him killed to cover up the fact that she paid him to instigate the Battle of Jedha, both to keep him from publicly testifying against the Path and to hide that she worked with a Graf from the rest of the Path. While the Jedi [[RevealingCoverUp suspect that the Path killed him]] given their other discovered activity on the planet, the fact that there was a chaotic battle going on where he was killed also makes it hard to prove for sure that the Mother did it.]]
* TheMole: [[spoiler:He is secretly a member of the Path of the Open Hand, having orchestrated Morton's death and the Battle of Jedha to tarnish the Jedi's reputation and lift up the Path.]]

* SmugSnake: He thinks because of his wealth and family name, he holds sway over a lot of people, [[spoiler:including Force cults like the Path of the Open Hand and the Brothers of the Ninth Door. Both show they care very little for money and only see him as a useful idiot.]] Never mind that his family has disowned him.
* TooDumbToLive: [[spoiler:When he tries to escape from the chaos he instigated on Jedha by hitching a ride on the ''Gaze Electric'' with the Mother, she refuses his request because of how much bad PR working with a Graf would give her. When he tries to persuade her to take him with her on the grounds that he's a loose end and could publicly implicate her and the Path if arrested, she simply shoots him, knowing that it would be difficult to tell who killed him due to the chaos going on.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to discuss his character without [[spoiler:bringing up his role in instigating the Battle of Jedha]].
* WarForFunAndProfit: [[spoiler:His involvement in the Path mostly stems from greed, even selling some Graf war droids to both Eiram and E'ronoh. The Path also bought a stockpile of the droids to fight against the Jedi]].

* BoldExplorer: As a way of trying to make a name for themself in the Graf family at as early an age as possible, they aspire to be the first to chart Planet X to the public. [[spoiler:However, the real reason they are trying to find Planet X is that they are trying to find out what really happened to their father.]]
* DisappearedDad: Their father was supposedly killed by pirates while on the Frontier. [[spoiler:The truth is that he disappeared while looking for Planet X, and the real reason Sky is trying to find the planet is to find out his fate. By the end of ''Quest for Planet X'', they have given up their chance to find the titular planet and closure on their father's fate to help Rooper save lives at Dalna.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: They seem to be an ambitious youth with ulterior motives, as seems to be typical for the High Republic-era Grafs. [[spoiler:In truth, they just want to find out what really happened to their father when the rest of the family decided to give up looking for him and presumed him dead. With enough convincing from both Rooper and Dass, they decide to give up the search for Planet X to prioritize to saving lives on Dalna when the Path of the Open Hand is planning for war.]]

* WhiteSheep: Throughout ''The High Republic'', individual Graf family members have been portrayed as incredibly ambitious at best, with some of them secretly collaborating with the [[ArcVillain Phase villains]] for profit. While they are ambitious, Sky has a much more sympathetic hidden motive for finding Planet X than they let on at first. [[spoiler:When confronted about the fact that they are putting their own needs before others, they decide to drop the search for their father in order to help save lives on Dalna by repairing a sabotaged comm buoy. This is ultimately a downplayed example, as not only was Tilson (the aforementioned Path collaborator) considered the BlackSheep of the family at the time, the other Grafs (Helis in particular) were only antagonistic towards them on account of Sky taking their ship without permission, and Sky makes up with them once they explain their reasons for doing so.]]

* DatingCatwoman: When investigating to see if some pirates were going to make a move against the pirate hunters, he and the pirate Alak -- who was wanted in 20 systems -- fell in love with each other. However, their choices put them at odds with each other. [[spoiler:He gets together with Alak again when he gives up the life of a pirate hunter while infiltrating the Dank Graks and chooses to be a pirate.]]
* EnemyMine: Despite being a pirate hunter and at odds with him, Alak suggests getting his help when he and Maz's crew learn that the Dank Graks are plotting to help sew chaos on Jedha. [[spoiler:Sav even trusts him to hold on to one of her lightsabers while she's infiltrating the Graks.]]

* HeroicSelfDeprecation: [[spoiler:When Sav has Tanteek bring him one of her lightsabers while on Jedha as a message, he notes that this is a sign that she trusts him. He then follows that up by noting that he's done nothing to earn the trust of her or Alak.]]
* InspectorJavert: Played with. He's not wrong that Maz's pirates are technically criminals, but he's also unnecessarily butting heads with them while investigating the Dank Graks, who are a much bigger threat to Takodana. [[spoiler:Sav and Alak putting their trust in him is what convinces him to team up with them for good.]]
* LawmanGoneBad: [[spoiler:Downplayed. While he technically goes "bad" on account of going from being a pirate hunter to a pirate, the pirate gang he joins (Maz's gang) are [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything far from the worst of them]]. As the pirates in question are also the story's protagonists, this is treated like a HeelFaceTurn.]]

* OffscreenTeleportation: As nobody familiar with Geode (nor the reader, even in visual media works) ever sees him move, a lot of characters get confused or freaked out when this featureless slab of rock suddenly shows up or disappears when they aren't looking.

* ConsummateLiar: If he is speaking, it is a good chance that he is lying about something. There are a few moments where Syl thinks he is finally being completely honest only for it to be revealed that Xylan had more lies and deceptions waiting to be revealed.
