!!The Former Rune Warrior

A former Rune Warrior, they are the PlayerCharacter of ''Dragon Storm''. It is heavily implied that they are a companion of the Phoenix Guard and the Shadow Warrior, as the trinkets which are collected for the "Memories of Eo" side quest consist largely of items the Rune Warriors would have picked up during their travels throughout the three ''Spellforce 1'' campaigns. Yasha (daughter of Hokan Ashir) held their Rune Stone.

* GuestStarPartyMember: She joins and leaves the Shaikan at various points of ''Shadow Wars''. During ''Dragon Storm'', she joins the party during the attack on Drag'Lur (after you've torn down a scout camp of the Blades).

It is heavily implied that they are a companion of the Phoenix Guard, as the trinkets which are collected for the "Memories of Eo" side quest consist largely of items the Phoenix Guard would have picked up during her travels throughout ''Order of Dawn'' and ''Shadow of the Phoenix''. * HeroOfAnotherStory: They were a Rune Warrior in their own right, so it is likely that they had their own adventures other than those together with the Phoenix Guard. The trinkets which popped up at exotic locations support this.
* NoodleIncident: Exactly what the Former Rune Warrior was doing at the [[spoiler: Dragon refuge, where the last great dragons were hiding]] remains a mystery.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Repeatedly, though hardly willingly. [[spoiler:Giving the Mask of Bélial to Hokan's ghost notably led to the events of ''Shadow of the Phoenix''.]]

[[spoiler: With the help of the Soul Carrier, she managed to unite the Norcaine under her banner. In ''Dragon Storm'', she styled herself as the Empress of the Norcaine.]]

* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Belonging to the Dracons, the warrior caste of the Norcaines, he is a fierce and honorable fighter who cares deeply to the sake of his people. It is to note that the Dracons are usually the mediators between the Archon and Sinistra castes.

* LovableRogue: Sees himself as this, although he was not so lovable in ''Shadow Of The Phoenix'', where he tries to shake the Rune Warriors off his trail.

* HeroOfAnotherStory: They were a Rune Warrior in their own right, so it is likely that they had their own adventures other than those together with the Phoenix Guard.

Finding out their whereabouts forms the main plot of ''Dragon Storm''.

* FireForgedFriends: With Nightsong. In ''Dragon Storm'', Nightsong expresses concern about their disappearance and joins the Former Rune Warrior to find out what happened to them.

The PlayerCharacter of ''The Order of Dawn''. The Phoenix Guard is a Rune Warrior who has regained her free will as Rohen gave her her Rune Stone. In ''Order'', she has a tendency to be an UnwittingPawn in almost every plot the villains think of. She come into possession of the [[SealedGoodInACan Phoenix Stone]] and decide to guard it with her life.

* BerserkButton: The Dark One killing [[spoiler: both Rohen and later Sartarius]] right in front of them after trapping them in ice ''really'' pissed them off. RoaringRampageOfRevenge ensued.

* ItsPersonal / LetsGetDangerous: As if killing [[spoiler: Rohen]] wasn't enough, the Dark One also kills [[spoiler: Sartarius]], all this by using the Guard as a MacGuffinDeliveryService, then trapping them in ice and performing the murder. The first time, the Guard was angry. The second time, not even the entire [[MechaMook Blade army]] could stop them.

* UnwittingPawn: She got hit really hard with this. Almost every villain in the story manipulates them at some point. [[spoiler: It is also revealed that she was an unwitting pawn in maintaining the StableTimeLoop]]

* PowerAtAPrice: However, the Shadow Sword also corrupts its bearer's soul and slowly turns them into a Shadow. [[spoiler: This is the Warrior's eventual fate.]]

The most powerful necromancer and a Circle Mage like Rohen. [[spoiler: Hokan is first seen in ''Order'', looking for the Mask of Belial. While he appears to be aiding the Rune Warriors, he ultimately wants to resurrect the Circle Mages, and bind them to his will, using the blood of a god (in this case, from Ereon, who is Darius's true identity. He is the main antagonist of ''Shadow of the Phoenix''. But, his schemes were destroyed together with him when the Phoenix was released from its Stone.]]

Rohen is the stereotypical good old wizard and the last one of a group of powerful mages called ''The Circle''. He survived the [[EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Convocation ritual]] and tried to help the people to get back on their feet and founded the Order of Dawn. This is a group of knights intending to maintain order in the broken world. He is the one who summoned the Phoenix Guard into the world, thus starting the first campaign. [[spoiler: He gets killed by the Dark One in the middle of the story.]] He shares a strange connection with the [[BigBad Dark One]]. [[spoiler: In fact, he was the Dark One in his youth, and after reading the Convocation Book and learning about the futility of the Convocation ritual, he tried to stop his younger self. Later, Darius/Ereon helped him with creating portals.]]

** BrainwashedAndCrazy

This is the main villain of the game. The Dark One is also a surviving mage of the Circle. He owns an army of MechaMooks, and is fond of using ice magic. The Dark One manipulates multiple people in the first campaign, including the Phoenix Guard. His plan was to travel back in time to manipulate past events to become all powerful. And he succeeds in the 'traveling back' part... [[spoiler: However, it is revealed that this person is actually a younger Rohen. When the young Rohen traveled back in time, he realized that he was making a big mistake. During his years in the past, he aged into the older version mentioned above. He tried to prevent his younger self from making the mistakes he made his own youth. In doing so, he created a time loop.]]

!!The Shadow Warrior

A former Rune Warrior and the main protagonist of ''The Breath of Winter'', he wields the legendary Shadow Blade, a weapon that is able to slay a Fial Darg effortlessly, but turns its wielder into a [[LivingShadow Shadow]]. [[spoiler: This is, eventually, the Warrior's fate.]] He returns in ''Shadow Wars'' and its sequels, [[spoiler: where he helps the Soul Carrier to befriend his new people and later assist Nightsong with ruling the Norcaines. He can also become a party member in ''Faith in Destiny''.]]

* BlessedWithSuck: As a Rune Warrior, the Shadow Warrior owns the only weapon able to kill a Fial Darg. However, said weapon is slowly corrupting him and turning him into a LivingShadow. And there's nothing to prevent that.
** CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler: As a Shadow, the Shadow Warrior is basically an invisible eldritch Fial Darg-slaying assassin.]]
* CallBack: When the Soul Carrier meets him in the Iron Fields, one of the first thing he says is how the Shadow Warrior saved the world from Aryn, which is the main plot of ''Breath of Winter''.

* HonorBeforeReason: The logic behind said HeelFaceTurn. The Shadow Warrior is doomed no matter what he does. The Masked Man's remedy only [[spoiler: slows down his soul's corruption from the Shadow Blade. In the end, he ''will'' become a Shadow. And he does.]] Rather than following the Masked Man in hopes of delaying his fate, the Shadow Warrior rebels against his employer, who he knows is a bad guy.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Averted. The Shadow Blade is the only weapon able to kill a Fial Darg, but in game, its stats are rather poor. Especially, it starkly decreases the wielder's resistance to magic.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Compared to the Phoenix Guard, he is much more ruthless and hard-spoken. Must come with dealing with the Dark Races of Urgath. But he is still a hero.
* LivingShadow: [[spoiler: His eventual fate.]]
* OnlyICanKillHim: Thanks to the Shadow Sword being the only thing able to kill a Fial Darg, the Shadow Warrior is the go-to person when one of these monsters starts a rampage.
* PowerAtAPrice: However, the Shadow Sword also corrupts its bearer's soul and slowly turns them into a Shadow. [[spoiler: This is the Warrior's eventual fate.]]
** ImHavingSoulPains: The corrupting effect of the Shadow Blade is mentally painful and physically exhausting.
** PowerUpgradingDeformation: [[spoiler: Once the corruption is complete, the Shadow Warrior becomes a Shadow, an EldritchAbomination / LivingShadow who is usually invisible but can become visible at will and mostly uses said ability for assassination.]]
* PurelyAestheticGender: Played straight in ''The Breath of Winter'', but averted in ''Shadow of the Phoenix'' where it is revealed that the Shadow Warrior is a man. [[spoiler: The fact that he is portrayed as a masculine Shadow in ''Shadow Wars'' also seems to confirm it, though no one knows if there are women among the Shadows.]]
* TrueCompanions: With Lena, the two having fought together before his eventual return at the beginning of the campaign. [[spoiler: When the Fial Darg backstabs her, he made sure the bastard goes down. Hard.]] And he is more than happy to help her get back at Grimaud for fooling her and betraying her.
